Its a virus right, maybe he caught some bad bug from Yardart? They healed him, fed him, maybe it was in the food? Or the Super Saiyan transformation weakened his heart? But I guess since Trunks had the cure I guess it was something a Earth person could catch. But Son is a alien, so he must of caught it. There is only one answer!

It had to been magic, because in reality there is no such thing as a Heart Virus. We have Heart Disease, but thats not the same thing as a virus per say.

About the bomb, this is what the interview says specifically:

Even though they’re called the Galactic Patrol, they only stand a chance against Saiyans when they’re children, and the Extinction Bomb doesn’t work on them. Naturally, they have no choice but to “turn a blind eye” to people like Freeza.

I'm assuming this means "the Extinction Bomb won't work on the adult Saiyans, so there's no hope of fighting Saiyans except when they're children," not "the bomb doesn't work on Saiyan children." So basically, to reword it a bit... "they can't fight adult Saiyans directly, and the Extinction Bomb doesn't work on them (the adults) either; they only stand a chance against Saiyan children." It'd be a bit silly to say that can stand a chance against the children only but then turn right back around and say their planet-clearing superweapon somehow doesn't work on the children...

As for the heart virus--I always kinda figured it was something he picked up on Yardrat. I mean yeah, it was apparently known of in Trunks' future (since they had a cure by then), but it was not known of on present-day Earth--so Goku could've brought it home with him and infected others. There's three years between his return and the Androids showing up, plenty of time for something with a long "dormant but contagious" period to get around (especially if it can spread from Saiyans to other species of animals, not just to humans--he could've given it to random tigers and dinosaurs and such out in the middle of nowhere, and then others could've caught it from them.) And it's possible that others on the main cast could've caught it from him when he came to kill Freeza/Cold (and then spread it to others) during that period, but died from Androids before the virus kicked in and killed them so nobody ever knew they had it.

Fans believe he got it on Yardart, but there's no proof that he did. I remember Trunks saying that people succumbed from the virus. So the virus is likely a virus on Earth and Goku most likely catch it like any other disease.

I don't think Mr. Toriyama wanted people to think too much about from where the virus was from.

I think it was just for the story during the android saga, so that Vegeta and the others would fight.

I personally will subscribe to the Yardrat theory until it is debunked. There's really no evidence to support it, but it ties in with the overall story much better that way.

But that means he would have caught the virus at the same time in both timelines, right? So why would it start affecting him so much later in the timeline we follow? (Especially since we know from his battle with 19 that going Super Saiyan can make it worse, and he probably would have spent more time in that form and generally exerting himself with something specific to train for...)

Well, in the original timeline, he presumably went Super Saiyan and fought Freeza and Cold.
