Dragon Ball Z Level Blu-Ray Sets Audio Help.

Post by Kingdom Heartless » Fri Aug 22, 2014 1:17 am

Start out by saying I haven't the first clue about techs and specs and whatever. I have a 55" Sony hooked up to a surround sound Blu-Ray player. When I try to play my level sets, the sound it horribly muffled, and barely audible. Can anyone explain this?

Which audio track are you listening to?

If it's the Japanese...mine sounds like that too. I think it's a little worse than I've heard on other FUNi releases but I could be wrong

The Japanese track is always quiet and muffled. It's due to the crappy audio source since Toei threw out the master tapes years ago.

Muffled, yes. Quiet? That doesn't sound right.

Do you have the speaker fill option enabled on your surround sound system? I know that not having that checked caused the audio to only come out of the center channel and that sounded absolutely awful.

Interesting. Not too long ago I asked a question about the Level BDs' Japanese audio and got bashed for it but now here's different.

To me, the Japanese audio on the Level BDs compared to the Dragon Boxes Z sounds a lot cleaner, better sounding and would have preferred to have watched the entire Dragon Box Z collection with it due to the Dragon Box Z being very muffled and somewhat quiet.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

Is there a comparison of the level set audio and dbox?

It's supposed to. It's Mono.

Yes, I do fully understand the properties of mono. Thanks bud.

Mono out of one speaker still sounds fucking awful. Mono out of all speakers sounds far better and that's my point. Perhaps it's quieter as it's only coming from one speaker rather than getting the extra boost and dynamic range of multiple speakers.

Speaking as dub fan, I find it quite cool that the Japanese track is muffled and such, gives the show that retro feeling. But if I were to watch the show like that for 291 eps, yeah that would feel frustrating, especially after hearing what the broadcast audio sounds like.

It was the opposite for me actually, it was really frustrating watching the first couple of episodes with it, but after about 5 episodes I got used to it, and now I'm so used to it hardly even bothers me anymore

that being said I'd still love to get the broadcast audio on a official release one day!

The biggest problem is that people know there is/was a better version out there, I guess the muffled audio is a constant reminder of that, like how the new BD's are a constant reminder to the folks to loved the level sets.

True, I miss the days when I didn't know about any broadcast audio or anything like that and just thought it was because it was old, those were the days :(

So I tried switching to TV speakers, which worked, but still not sure how to work it with surround sound. I tried a US Dragon Box disc and it was the same.

What brand is your surround sound system and how old is it? I have a Sony surround sound system and on the remote it has a sound mode button. On my old Samsung surround sound system the remote had a Dolby PL II mode button. Look for something similar on your surround sound systems remote and shuffle through the various modes until you find one thats to your liking.

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

Can someone tell me why people think Mono means the sound quality is bad? Mono simply means "one" (just like a monocle, which is a glass that only covers one eye). In the case of audio, it means that there is one audio source. There is no 'left', there is no 'right', 'behind' or 'in front'. There is just the one audio track. There is no reason, or correlation, to mono audio being bad quality.

The broadcast audio is also mono (its actually duplicated stereo, but effectively just mono). The only reason it sounds better than the dvds is because the source it comes from is better. Just because something is mono, does not mean it has bad sound quality.

No, but having 6 speakers and the audio only coming out of one of them would probably sound pretty bad.

Yeah, I'm not sure if Corpsecreate is directing that post at me or not but I certainly wasn't implying mono equated to bad audio quality. Heck, I just watched The Wind Rises the other day; that sounds beautiful and is entirely monaural. Again, well aware of the properties of mono. I don't see anyone else implying otherwise in this thread.

As Puto said, my point is that using one center channel of an entire system is awful and that may be an issue.
