Would you be okay if someone else took over Dragon Ball?

Post by Doctor. » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:42 pm

Similar to the "If another mangaka wrote Dragon Ball thread" but different. Not asking how would you think Dragon Ball could have been re-written, but instead how would you react to the news that someone would be doing all Dragon Ball related manga and movies from, let's say, 2020 on-wards? Let's say, for example, Naho Ooishi. Or Toyotaro? Would you be okay? Would you hate it and call everything garbage? Or would you not care? Regardless of your reaction, what do you think a change in author permanently could bring to the Dragon Ball franchise?

Discuss.

I feel like, ultimately, anything that's written by someone other than the author, about characters that aren't your own; officially approved by the author or not, is still fanfiction, imo. It could be good or bad, but it's still someone else's work. You could try your hardest to write in someone else's style, but your own style's still gonna bleed through.

Now bringing in someone else to do artwork while Toriyama writes (with Torishima or another good editor to balance Toriyama out) that I'd be all for.

Like something written by Toriyama, edited by Torishima, and drawn by Toyotaro would be ideal, imo.

As long as they layed out an official canon that had movie 5 in it, I wouldn't care
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)
Kai >>> Z

A bit of yeah and nah. The thing about Dragon Ball for me is the art just as much as it is the story. So even if Toriyama were to create the story and some other guy were to draw, it still wouldn't really feel like Dragon Ball to me. But then again if you were talking about an anime or a movie... hmmm... Regardless, if Toriyama didn't have a decent chunk of creative control over any project I would at the least be very skeptical to say the least. Then again if it were just some random special or movie, I wouldn't mind too much. I mean look at the original Bardock special.

Ugh, I'm being very wishy-washy and unfocused with this. If the main story were to be continued by someone other than Toriyama in the main continuity manga form I wouldn't be alright with it, but I'd give it a chance. But a movie or special (in anime, manga, or even the dreaded live action form)? I wouldn't mind at all since I can just easily wash it away from my own sense of canon like the Episode of Bardock.

As much as i love DB, i wouldn't want a new series at all, so no.
Like others have said, it wouldn't be Dragon Ball, in story and/or art.
Even stuff by Ooshi i'm a little iffy about, *cough*EpisodeOfBardock*cough* but i'd much rather Toriyama never do anything DB again then have someone else take over.

Yeah i know it sounds close-minded but it wouldn't be the same series i loved for so many years

Overall no one as of now has written dragon ball with the quality that Toriyama does so no,If Toriyama for whatever reason doesn't want to write it anymore then leave it be but from his interviews he's having fun and likes writing as long as there's no big drawing involved like the manga so i doubt he will stop anytime soon
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is another author writing their own story with their own characters but in the same universe/setting. So you still have Capsule Corp, the Dragon Balls, Namekians, Saiyans and other concepts/ideas borrowed from the series but original characters instead of someone else trying to write Goku and co.

I'd suck. As simple as that!

As if GT, Kai, half-baked specials & final nail in the coffin, disastrous latest DBZ film installment weren't "PROOF" that DragonBall has been "officially" took-over by Money-greed Corporate company..

DBZ has ended period. Fortunately, the franchise has staying power (thanks to its fans even after 10-15 years). But that doesn't give excuse for whatever Corporate Company to shove down our throat mediocre-to-plain useless installments...

I still think Togashi & Rumiko Takahashi would do better in-terms of adventure, plotting with complex & smart writing. DragonBall charm/magic will still be preserved. Oda/Kishimoto/Tite Kubu trio however would destroy DBZ charm by sacrificing character designs & likable characterizations for plot/depth.

Honestly can't see why people consider Togashi to be similar to Toriyama in writing at all, for the Dragon Ball style to continue in case he does miraculously takes over the franchise.

You think the manga and anime were made as charity ? From day 1 dragon ball was created ONLY to make $$$ for the companies and the same goes for any other entertainment franchise.

Dbz is still going strong with Kai,New movies,Games and more

Replying to the original post, we already have that. Twice. With Dragon Ball SD and with Victory Mission.

So my response to the question is, from current experience, yes, I would be okay with it. I would also exercise my right to not care, if it doesn't interest me. (Which is the case with SD)

Akira Toriyama coalition with Kazuki Nakashima and director Hiroyuki Imaishi for a DB movie would be great.

Yes, but not with spin-offs, I mean continuing the Dragon Ball story.

Oh, okay then, fair enough. My answer's still the same, though.

If they keep the same style animation and not downgrade it like Transformers then it's OK.
I used to get nightmares about seeing DBZ drawn totally different  Was happy when i woke up

If they worked closely with Akira Toriyama or had him as a consultant, I would be okay with it I guess... Not really though. Episode of Bardock was like that wasn't it?

Maybe if some other people came with ideas and then they made Toriyama write about these ideas and make them his own, then yeah I would be alright with that. If there's anything Toriyama can do, it's he can improvise and roll with his ideas.

Only if they understood the canon and know it by heart. Thats something that is the make or break of this series. Episode of Bardock was terrible because it added nothing at all to the series but fanbase plotholes. The only way the series could be successfully transfered to someone else, as others said if Akira Toriyama is supervising, art director and head consultant. I'm sure a lot of fans could write far better stories that would suit the series better than what we've been getting lately but it wont be accepted by anyone unless he accepts it. Though I dont see this happening I want someone else credible to take over, not character fanboys/girls and not fans from other anime (unless they were writters themselves that Toriyama likes) but people who know the material and remember more of it than he does currently.

It would be cool if Akira Toriyama had some doujinshi sent to him and whatever ones he liked the most and fit the canon would be reworked into something he could work with. As long as they were japanese fans though that know the real DB experience and not Americans who just turn it into BrolyBallZ.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

I'd love to see a Dragonball reboot written by Marty Isenberg.

I would be happy if Yoshihiro Togashi took over, only problem is that he likes to take long breaks in production :? .
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

Anyone see Boondocks Season 4? I think it would go something like that if Dragon Ball was just uprooted. I don't think it'll have the same appeal that attracted us to it in the first place. Sure we got things like Dragon Ball Multiverse, which I think is great, but it still isn't the Dragon Ball Toriyama wrote, even if it was a just "a job" to him.
