If Kazuki Takahashi, the author of Yu-Gi-Oh!, wrote Dragon Ball, then Dragon Ball GT would be about kung fu on motorcycles.

If Hirohiko Araki created Dragon Ball... (warning massive spoilers for people who have not read Jojo‘s Bizarre Adventures or Dragon Ball)
Also like Weejus mentioned previously, all the characters names would be based off musicians and songs making it nearly impossible for the series to become a hit in America.

Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
The plots in YYH or HxH have never been complex, and especially YYH's characters are similar to DB's (Goku-Yusuke, Vegeta-Hiei, Piccolo-Kurama, Toguro-Freeza/Cell, Koenma-Kami, etc.). I can get the lazy art, but his redrawn stuff in the volumes are great, and his art when he draws Toguro in YYH during the final round is amazing. Peep some of his stuff during the Chimera Ant arc as well:Doctor. wrote:Togashi? I'd pass. I don't want my Dragon Ball to be filled with wannabe complex plot, average characters and lazy art.

Vegeta and Hiei I can definitely see, and I can maybe see the Piccolo and Kurama parallels, but...Yusuke and Goku? Outside of being the lead characters of their respective series, I can't really see them as being too awfully similar personality wise.SaiyanZ wrote:The plots in YYH or HxH have never been complex, and especially YYH's characters are similar to DB's (Goku-Yusuke, Vegeta-Hiei, Piccolo-Kurama, Toguro-Freeza/Cell, Koenma-Kami, etc.). As far as Togashi's art goes though, based on Yu Yu Hakusho alone as I haven't read HxH yet...ehh...I'm not really a big fan either. A lot of it just seems too...sketchy, or something. I much prefer the anime's artstyle (in general anyway).

Agreed, Yusuke and Goku really aren't all that similar at all. Gon and Goku on the other hand are much more similar...Gyt Kaliba wrote:Yusuke and Goku? Outside of being the lead characters of their respective series, I can't really see them as being too awfully similar personality wise.

They are, but that is one of my problems with Gon. He is rather generic.SaiyamanMS wrote:Agreed, Yusuke and Goku really aren't all that similar at all. Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
Yusuke and Goku are similar imo, in fact he's the shonen character most similar to Goku that I've seen. Gon is similar also, but Yusuke is almost the same as Goku outside of him being more of a city boy and bigger smack talker (although Goku himself can be quite condescending). They both love to fight, generally only fight for themselves, are not very smart, die twice, have to learn about their heritage (Goku with his Saiyan stuff and Yusuke with his demon blood), have to develop a killer instinct (Goku after training under Kami to fake-killing Freeza, and Yusuke when he fake-kills Doctor and subconsciously makes the decision to kill Sensui), have a signature blue energy blast, don't really care for their biological parents....there's more too, but he's far and above the most similar to Goku imo.

Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
I was more-so referring to Hunter in regards to the "wannabe complex plot" part, seen as how the Hunter fans keep blabbing about how Hunter x Hunter's plot is so deep, so complex unlike other Shounens, and I just don't see it. Average characters apply to both HxH and YYH, though.SaiyanZ wrote:The plots in YYH or HxH have never been complex, and especially YYH's characters are similar to DB's (Goku-Yusuke, Vegeta-Hiei, Piccolo-Kurama, Toguro-Freeza/Cell, Koenma-Kami, etc.). Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
Oh, I see. Well, both are generally easy plots to follow, I find their structure pretty similar to Dragon Ball's in terms of the whole new villain showing up and training to beat them motifs. I definitely wouldn't call YYH's characters average, but HxH's does leave more to be desired; but I think that's only because he's waiting to reveal stuff about them.Doctor. wrote:I was more-so referring to Hunter in regards to the "wannabe complex plot" part, seen as how the Hunter fans keep blabbing about how Hunter x Hunter's plot is so deep, so complex unlike other Shounens, and I just don't see it. From the Youtube community I'm apart of, Dragon Ball is underrated. Death Note and Evangelion are also heavily criticized lolDoctor. wrote:It kinda already is. Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
From the communities I'm a part of it's either massively overrated (Youtube guys who state it's the greatest anime of all time), or massively underrated (think it's utter crap). Kanzenshuu in general seems to have a good standing. Everyone here think it's good, but obviously recognize the huge flaws and inconsistencies it has.SaiyanZ wrote:From the Youtube community I'm apart of, Dragon Ball is underrated. And you only need to go to a top 10 list on Youtube to see how either Death Note or Dragon Ball are overrated by the Youtube peeps.
Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
Ah I see. Personally, I think DB/Z is top 10 material as a manga moreso than an anime, but I can agree that they don't use the right criteria when assessing the series, because usually they use the watered down old dub of the series and don't bother with Kai. Rarely if ever have I seen people reference the manga on YouTube, aside from MistareFusion and some others.Doctor. wrote:From the communities I'm a part of it's either massively overrated (Youtube guys who state it's the greatest anime of all time), or massively underrated (think it's utter crap). Goku's arc is about how fighting for its own sake is fulfillment and meaning.SaiyanZ wrote:Yusuke and Goku are similar imo, in fact he's the shonen character most similar to Goku that I've seen. Yusuke's arc, and thus the entirety of YYH's, is about how fighting for its own sake makes you empty.

This is true and that IS a difference between how they approach fighting when shit hits the fan. But, they both love a good fight.ImmaDeker wrote:Goku's arc is about how fighting for its own sake is fulfillment and meaning.SaiyanZ wrote:Yusuke and Goku are similar imo, in fact he's the shonen character most similar to Goku that I've seen. Re: If a different mangaka wrote Dragon Ball
I guess what bugs me about your comparison is, if anything, YYH is thematically the anti-Dragonball (and in a lot of ways the anti-shonen), and Yusuke's similarities to Goku that you point out are, at best, incredibly superficial and don't really paint the context both exist in in an accurate light.
