Whis' gender?
I think he is genderless just like Kaioshins. What do you think?

Re: Whis' gender?
He's referred to as a male in what Toriyama says about him.Low Tone G wrote:I think he is genderless just like Kaioshins. What do you think?
Akira Toriyama wrote:“Guess it’s about time I brought out a good-lookin’ fella, too!” …I thought. (laughs) And so Whis was born. Well, more so than a “good-lookin’ fella”, he became a character who’s sort of naïvely oblivious, but as a result, I came to like this one quite a bit too. So, Beerus and Whis. Bringing them out in sets of two might also be a characteristic of my stories.
Akira Toriyama wrote:Whis is a character I came up with, figuring as you might expect, that I needed to bring out a handsome fella, as well. (laughs) I like his air of obliviousness. He’s constantly eating delicious things, and he lacks a sense of imminent danger to the point that I wondered whether it was really OK. (laughs)

Re: Whis' gender?
Well, Piccolo and the Kaioshins are referred to as he or she as well but they still are not male or female. I think that is pretty odd anyway. I would just make them completely male or female - except Namekians. I am okay with them being Yoshis (no, I am not saying Yoshis are hermaphrodites, that was just a joke).

I guess that's a fair point. I dunno. He's a dude to me!

Re: Whis' gender?
It'd be good to turn out he is genderless, just because of his age and his occupation he can not have any romantic relationships

Re: Whis' gender?
There is not even actual romance shown between the main characters - only very rare scenes. Whis being male would make no difference, I guess.

Re: Whis' gender?
IMO regular sexual reproduction would be kinda menial for gods and god-like creatures like Whis. Therefore they don't even have genitals.
On the other hand, referring to someone as a male or a female is not just about genders. It's about sexual identity.
The Namekku-seijin bear masculine features so they are all referred as a male. The Shin-jin could be either, i assume they born with dominant male or female attributions. So it's not their own choice, just imagine Kibito as a genteel lady in a large hat with a cup of tea. Whis supposed to be an "ikemen" a hot guy in Japanese. That's another thing that for us, who born in the western culture, he looks more like a gay or something, but in Japan the feminine features on a guy are pretty attractive for the girls. Long story short, i think he's a 100% guy.

Re: Whis' gender?
In Dragon Ball you are not a man or woman without only having the required genitals and often in our world the same way of definition is used. I personally also like to call the West Kaioshin a woman or the Northern one a man or Whis a man. So if there is a main gender noticable I call the person that but it is not always like this.

I really share the same idea. And also, I would add that God-like characters like Whis would also have a God-like offsprings, so I do think that Whis isn't sexually productive either, unlike Namekians. I think Kaioshins are also sexually unproductive.

If hes a Kaioshin like East-Kai hes male. Just like Female variations exist.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Only in terms of appearance of course, as the race is confirmed to be genderless.SingleFringe&Sparks wrote:If hes a Kaioshin like East-Kai hes male. Just like Female variations exist.

Re: Whis' gender?
I like the idea of the most powerful being in DB history being casually and anti-climactically defeated by a woman. It's kind of a "fuck you" to shonen in general.

Kais have gender too. There are 2 female gods in the series as far as I remember.

But I feel bad for old kai, he's fused as both man and woman.
However that works

They're not women. They just look like women. Kaio and Kaioshin are genderless, as has been established repeatedly in this thread.flashback0180 wrote:Kais have gender too. There are 2 female gods in the series as far as I remember.

Re: Whis' gender?
Repost the quote from Herms, just because:
Where Kaio come from
Toriyama is next asked what the Kaio’s heredity system is like. Toriyama explains that inside the giant ball that is the DB cosmos is a world called Planet Kaishin, which is where the Kaio are all born and raised. This planet is like a giant version of the Kaio Planets that North Kaio and the others live on. On it is a gigantic tree, the Kaiju, and the Kaio are all born from the fruit of this tree, as Shin-jin. The population of this planet is about 80. The Shin-jin are genderless, and their average life expectancy is said to be 75,000 years. They live leisurely lives, studying various things at a school-like castle. But whenever one of the Kaio on the Kaio Planets passes away, they draw lots among themselves to choose who will take that Kaio’s place and become the new Kaio. The Kaioshin, however, are chosen only from among Shin-jin born from a special golden fruit that is particularly rare. Occasionally there are delinquent Shin-jin with evil hearts, and they go to be with the Makaio.

Then what about old kai
I'm not completely joking. The fact is old kai fused with a witch and witches are female.
So that should means old kai has a gender...

Re: Whis' gender?
He could. Given that he's still treated as "male" instead of female though, I kinda feel like that that specific trait wasn't a factor in the fusion.
Re: Whis' gender?
Well we see from the fusions that the Shin-jin maintain a dominance over the other person's body. As such they maintain their personality and the personality of those who fused with them seems to be lost or almost complete absorbed by the Shin-jin. Similar to the Namekian fusion Piccolo underwent when he absorbed Nail. They maintain a lot of their features and form from the fusion. Only gaining stuff like height, different hair-styles and clothes. So I would assume that Rou Kaioshin's dominance just cancelled out the witch's sex.

Re: Whis' gender?
The confusing part is old kai.
Jokes aside, if they were truly asexual or sexless why was he such a pervert?
He was reading some ecchi magazine and even accepted gokus bribe (bulma)
