Dragon Ball Online questions
Are there any topics/areas on Kanzenshuu or elsewhere which have a huge assembly of videos and information on DB Online?
Also, what was the deal with that game? Is it true it never came out in Japanese and will never come out in English? If so, why?

Re: Dragon Ball Online questions
The game is dead. It was released in Korea, Taiwan, and Honk Kong, and was also about to be released in China, but it shut down recently. It's not going to come back.
There was this big thread where the discussion of the game was going on.
As for the story, everything you need to know is here.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I'm greatly enjoying reading all the mythology to the game!
I never bothered to check it out before, always assuming the game would come out in English eventually, so I wouldn't "spoil" it.
I wonder if the game will ever get....
(drum roll, you know what's coming next)
fan-translated into English? I certainly hope so!

Re: Dragon Ball Online questions
Well, the official game doesn't actually exist anymore, so there isn't a way to fully translate the game as it was.
That said, we have extracted most of the text and there was a translation project in progress before it shut down...though they were only using online translators like Google. Some of the players of the game have collected the resources and are hoping to rebuild it on private servers, but it won't be official by any means.
Me and another member were hoping to eventually translate the Korean version of the game's extracted text into English properly, but that won't be done any time soon. There were over a thousand pages worth of text...soooo...yeah. We may browse through it and see if we can find just the interesting stuff that wasn't just "go defeat this monkey" quest text, but that still means searching through all that text.

I salute you! I look forward to the day when all J. DB games are translated into English and other languages so that all fans can enjoy them.
Btw, since you're an expert on this game.... what are the best videos out there you can think of that you'd like to post to use to represent this game? You're probably aware of my "YT vids for all DB games" topic, and I figure you could come up with some good ones. (I'm too unfamiliar with the game to know what's best)

Re: Dragon Ball Online questions
I don't really know. Ultimately it is probably best if you browse through the videos and find something you think is impressive, because the game was actually quite boring, at least to me since I don't like MMORPGs. I was only playing it for the lore and Easter eggs you wouldn't find by just following updates (like the blueprints for Jinzoningen 9 in a destroyed lab at the Red Ribbon Headquarters). I guess it depends on what you're looking for, to show off the story aspect of the game or just the combat?
For the former, I suggest just doing a Youtube search for some combination of Dragon Ball Online(DBO) Time Machine Quests(TMQ) or Ultimate/Underground Dungeons(UDs). Regular questing missions are boring. there is a lot of dashing halfway across a region of the map just to kill one or two monkeys, then turning around and dashing all the way back. The TMQs and UDs are self-contained story elements that usually move pretty quickly, and because they aren't as open world as the rest of the game, they are also decent displays of teamwork and combat.
If you're just looking to show off the game's combat, then you should probably swap out those search options for one of these: Player vs. Player (PVP), Budokai/Tournament, or Dragon Ball Scramble (DB Scramble). They are obviously geared specifically to show off the combat of the game. This will also typically give you a decent variety of character types, so you can see various skills like Super Saiyan, Kaio-ken, Pure Majin, Namekian Giant-thingy, the Namekian ability to spit out the eggs and fight with their Pokopen, etc.

Re: Dragon Ball Online questions
I know this thread is quite old, but was just curious. Isn't DBO re-releasing as DBO Revelations, and will get an official English release that way? If this is false, then isn't DBO's shutdown decision from the creators basically telling us that DBO was just a mere idea that was scrapped?

DBO Revelations is a fan project. It is by no means official in any regard.OWmyDragonBallz wrote:I know this thread is quite old, but was just curious. The creators didn't want to shut the game down either, it was Namco Bandai and Shueisha that decided that DBO wasn't performing as they had hoped for the Dragon Ball franchise. I don't know how you came to the conclusion that is was just a scrapped idea. It may have never seen an English or Japanese release, but it was localized in 4 countries and played by fans all around the world (regardless of the language barrier) by the time it was closed. I could understand the thought if the game never made it out of beta or something (similarly to the Blizzard canceled MMO, "Titan"), but the game was around for almost 4 years, not counting initial development and beta periods. That's not really a "mere idea that was scrapped".
The abandoned concepts are now being recycled by Dimps for Xenoverse as well, so...
