What was 18 thinking when she used so much power?

When did #18 gain an abilty to sense ki?

For example, when Cell absorbs her after using Taiyo-ken, she's effectively fighting blindly. Logically I guess Krillin could have taught her, but I don't see any evidence to back it up...

To be fair, whenever anyone gets blinded by that attack, they seem to be rendered unable to sense ki. I mean, no one could sense Cell after he used it after his fight with Piccolo.

Alternately, maybe he suppressed his ki after using the technique, so she wouldn't have been able to sense him anyway.

My take on it was that they suppress their Ki and leave as fast as they can. After a fair distance, they probably even stop flying to negate any chance of being detected by the small amount of Ki they were using to fly.
