My J-World (Jump theme park) Adventure!

Post by sailorspazz » Sun Oct 05, 2014 3:38 pm

So I recently got back from an awesome trip to Japan, and I wanted to share one of the cool Dragon Ball related things I got to do. In Tokyo, there's an indoor amusement park for Jump properties called J-World. I happened across it when we were wandering through Ikebukuro, but wasn't able to go right away because I was with a group of people and no one else was interested in going. Most of our days were pretty jam packed, but near the end of the trip we had a couple hours to spare, so I dragged my husband along and away we went. Well, Tokyo is fucking enormous and I forgot how long it can take to get places, so by the time we got there we only had about an hour, so we had to rush through.
Image
As we entered, there was a circular room with video screens all around. Some people had entered a couple minutes before us, so the video had already started. Seemed to be just some welcome video (wasn't really listening, was too busy squeeing at all the giant Dragon Ball characters talking around me :D )

Knowing we didn't have much time, and that Dragon Ball was the main reason I was there, we headed straight toward the DB themed area.

Image

And then I took a bunch of pictures with all the Dragon Ball props:

Image
Clearly, this Kintoun has lower standards...

Image
Hanging out in a dead guy's armor.

Image
Vegeta's space pod.

Image
Got my power level read. Turns out I'm Freeza class...sweet. Then my husband got his read, and he was Super Saiyan Gokuu level. Goddammit...

Image
As you adjust the level on the gravity machine, clips of Vegeta's voice play, sounding pleased if you turn it high and berating you if you turn it low. I got yelled at by Vegeta! *squeeeeee*

After taking pictures around that first area, we went to one of the Dragon Ball attractions. The first one was a hunt for the dragon balls. Each participant is given a Dragon Radar, and you take it around to different stations and play mini games to collect the balls. I said to my husband, they're just games for little kids, this'll be super easy. Well, they get a little tougher when the explanations come up rather quickly, and one person is trying to translate and tell the other what to do, all while you have a strict time limit to complete the game :P They were mostly simple things, like pressing buttons as the characters directed you, or completing a slide puzzle. There were some that were completely random, like "one of these three pipes has dragon ball in it. Pick one!" You couldn't go back and retry any games you failed, but they had enough stations that you could fail a few and still get them all (I think we each failed 3 games, and there were still more stations that we could've gone to if we'd needed). Once the balls are all collected, you take the radar to a separate area to have a wish granted. Though no pictures were allowed in the attraction itself, I did get one with Karin as we were heading between the areas:

Image

Then we were taken to a little curtained off area where Shenlong appeared on a big screen. He started his spiel about granting wishes, at which point I was like, "hmm, do we get to say our own wish?" But then Gokuu's voice came on saying "Shenlong, please save the Earth!" and I was like, "Psh, that's a lame ass wish." Then the screen showed some asteroids that were heading toward Earth fading away, and we were both like, "Gokuu totally could've destroyed those on his own!"

We then tried to go to the second Dragon Ball attraction, but there was a wait for it at that time, so we wandered around some of the other areas. We did a One Piece attraction, which was run by a girl with an impossibly high chipper voice (I really hope she only uses that voice at the theme park, she would probably hurt herself and others using it all the time!) And we found some more Dragon Ball stuff to take pictures with.

Image
The piece of not-for-sale merchandise I most wanted to steal... but proooobably would've been a bit too obvious. "No, he totally came in with me, I swear!"

They also had drawings on the walls where you could pose and do certain famous attacks.

Then we went back to the second Dragon Ball attraction, where you went into a room with a big screen, put on 3D glasses, and did an interactive thing where you could shoot a Kamehameha with Gokuu. The effects were actually pretty cool (again, couldn't take pictures in this area). Even though the "plot" didn't really make sense: it's at the point in the series where Boo is an ally, and somehow Freeza gets resurrected, and you have to help Gokuu and Boo fight Freeza. Like, psh, Freeza ain't shit at that point in the series, but whatever, he's an iconic villain so I understand why they'd use him. The effects were better than I would have expected, though I would prefer the option to do one of Vegeta's attacks (I know, I know, they're doing stuff to please the mainstream fans, not the rabid fangirls :P )

We went over to the Naruto area after that, but unfortunately the attraction had already closed for the day (it was about 15 minutes before closing at this point). We happened across the dining area (I know they had some Dragon Ball related foods, but the kitchen was already closed, and we were still full from an all-you-can-eat dessert buffet we went to earlier)

Image

In this area, I spotted a poster for a certain movie...!

Image

And then we found a Budoukai stage, where one of the employees was kind enough to take our picture.

Image

We spent the last few minutes back in the big circular room from the beginning, which had a central screen where pictures of different Jump characters were floating around. If you pressed one of the pictures, that character would appear on one of the screens around the room for a few moments. I tried to take pictures with a few of them, and managed to get a couple Dragon Ball characters, but unfortunately the Vegeta shot was too short for me to get a proper pic (some of the characters said lines and stayed up longer. Vegeta just put up a peace sign and disappeared).

The best shot I could get with Vegeta...with me as a blur running toward him

Overall, it was a super fun time. I wish I'd had more time to explore everything, since I know we missed things. But if I get to go back to Tokyo and this park is still there, I'd definitely go again!

This is awesome!

I wish you got to see the food kitchen. Maybe you would have eaten Senzu Beans made out of KFC?

This is so awesome! I wish I could go to a place like this. :)
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

What the hell places like this even exist, I would go there in a heartbeat was it free sorry I skim through all the reading, was mostly looking at the pics. And your freeza level damn I wouldn't want to fight you.
"There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause troubles without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood… and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others: They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they’ve never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them… because in truth, I am that monster."

This page shows the food that was available:
http://www.namco.co.jp/tp/j-world/foods/kitchen.html

Boo Chocolate cream bread (is the chocolate made out of people?)
Garlic fried chicken (I didn't get why Vegeta was on the box at first...then I was like, duh :P Would have gotten it quicker if it was Saiyan arc Vegeta)
Kintoun cotton candy (with a churro shoved inside it!)
Piccolo and Gohan's brotherly love "loco moco" (the fact that there's lettuce on it tells me this is not loco moco the Hawaiian way :P But I guess Hawaiians have put their own spin on Japanese dishes, too, so they're even)
enjyu123 wrote:What the hell places like this even exist, I would go there in a heartbeat was it free
The cost of admission plus access to all attractions was 2300 yen (at the current exchange rate, about $21). At the time I went they had a discounted rate, though; the regular admission is 2900 (~$27). So for a theme park, not too bad. It wasn't very big, and it doesn't have roller coasters or anything, but if you're a fan of Jump properties it's worth checking out. Though I'd say you'll definitely get more out of it if you have some level of Japanese comprehension, since there are no English explanations (aside from precautions about who can use the attractions.)

Dang this is extremely awesome! The closest I have ever been to a Jump styled place is Disney Epcot.. which was cool, but it wasn't enough for my love of Jump. The food looks so cool too and price doesn't matter to me anyways. I seriously need to visit Japan sometime.

Definitely! And cool, you got to take pics with the costumed characters. I didn't get to see any because I went late in the evening, but if I was there at the right time I could've met Mr. Satan, Boo, and Gokuu.
