FUNi cast who'd be a better Goku than Schemmel?
While Schemmel has definitely gotten his Goku voice much better throughout the years I'd like to see Chris Ayres or Vic Mignogna take a chance at him due to their voices being a closer resemblance of the original, I'm of course not a fan of Schemmel's Goku however in his own way he's perfected him but Masako Nozawa is and will always be the true voice of Goku so having VAs who can do a job of staying true to the authentic material is always better.
It's a lost cause to ask for something like this since FUNimation isn't going to swap Schemmel's place for anyone else but still a good consideration for the future.

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

I wouldn't want to hear anyone but Schemmel play Goku in an English version. He's like Nozawa.. just completely associated with the character.
As for "stay true to authentic material", it's not up to the voice actor, it's who ever is in charge of the production.
You're probably right too, why swap someone who's been doing it successfully for so many years. He's like Michael Cole in the WWE... been doing it for over 15 years yet people still hate on him.

Re: FUNi cast who'd be a better a better Goku than Schemmel?
Personally, while I understand why fans want dub actors to have voices that resemble the voices of the original Japanese actors, I can't relate to it. As Peter Kelamis said, "The level and emotion of the original performance is attempted to be re-created but not the voice. If I tried to re-create the original voice I think I would run the risk of hitting a note so high that I may not be able to have children in future life."
As far as I'm concerned, Schemmel's portrayal is incredibly accurate to the source-material: he sounds like a goofy manchild with a passion for family, his friends, and (arguably above all else) fighting. His voice doesn't sound anything like Nozawa, but his acting absolutely does (in my opinion). Are there other, higher-pitched actors who could do just as good a job if not better? Possibly, sure. However, just as I consider Masako Nozawa to be the iconic Japanese voice of Goku, I consider Sean Schemmel to be the iconic English voice of Goku. He totally gets the character now, and it shows in his acting.
I have also been a bit surprised to hear people refer to Schemmel's voice as "deep," as he's one of the higher-pitched voice actors that Goku has had. Not the highest-pitched, no, but most of the voice actors I've heard for Goku in other international dubs are actually deeper than he is. Which, again, is not a problem for me personally as long as they demonstrate a proper understanding of the character in their acting.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

If they wanted a more "Nazawa" like take on him for English, Vic or Todd Haberkorn could do it. I also remember this one anime where a little series of parody's play off and one features Colleen doing Goku in her Luffy voice.

Also being exactly like the Japanese actors aren't always a good thing as it limits the performance and could harm a person's voice at times. Recall what happened to that lady from Excel Saga who lost her voice trying to emulate a shrill voice.
Also is this an American thing only, or are Japanese Transformers fans wanting Convoy to sound like Peter Cullen-san?
Re: FUNi cast who'd be a better a better Goku than Schemmel?
I'm gonna stop you right there. Comparing Schemmel to Cole is possibly one of the biggest insults to Schemmel.LordCrumb wrote:You're probably right too, why swap someone who's been doing it successfully for so many years. I might dislike Schemmel's interpretation but I cannot deny that he has improved immensely since he first fell into the role. And for that matter so has the direction and the writing that goes into the newer DBZ dubbing.
However, Micheal Cole, and really all of the commentary team, has become abysmal over the years. By now they're all just mouth pieces for Vince McMahon's awful ideas. They're just puppets to tell how fans should they be reacting to the product. They lack the personality and insight that a JR or a Gorilla Monsoon brought.
People are perfectly justified in their contempt of Micheal Cole. He's someone who should be much better than he his due to years of experience alone. It can at least be agreed that Schemmel has improved since Season 3, some would say by leaps and bounds.

I'll throw my hat in and say I wouldn't really want anyone else for Adult Goku. Sean Schemmel's voice is as iconic to dub fans as Masako Nozawa's is to fans of the original.
If he had to be replaced for some other reason rather than just for the sake of replacing, I'd remain open to anyone, really. Can't think of any particular names off the top of my head.

The only way Funi would change Goku's voice actor is if Sean Schemmel retires, looses his voice or dies. He's what most fans in the US know know and love. They have no reason too change at this point. I honestly thing he does a good job these days.

Contempt is a strong word, and are they really justified in their dislike if they are being told to be mouthpieces for Vince? Cole is better than he's given credit for, but he's being over produced. Just like Schemmel and other actors can be helped or hindered by bad direction, so can announcers.By now they're all just mouth pieces for Vince McMahon's awful ideas. In my opinion? Nobody.
Schemmel IS Goku to me (and not just English Goku, but Goku on the whole...Blame Kai, because before it, Nozawa was poised to be my #1). I can't think of a single actor I'd prefer over Schemmel for Goku in English.

I think everyone's favorite is whoever was voicing him when they first saw the show, I personally like Sean S and whoever voiced him in the original release of dead zone circa 1997. the original voice for piccolo from those early releases on vhs I still think is the best piccolo ever! but in the end what they need to do is just stick with one cast of voice actors and STICK WITH IT! I am so tired of the voices changing all the time!

^Isn't that what they do? Sean Schemmel voices Adult Goku in everything in both the original run and the Kai run, so I don't really see how it's inconsistent anymore. Unless you mean his late Z Season 2 performance being a little different than the rest.

I'm quite the fan of Ian Sinclair, who I think would do a very good job.
I've been very impressed with practically every performance he's given for Funimation, as not only is the guy a good voice actor, he really digs deep to try and understand the role he's cast in. He's really perfect as 'Brook' in 'One Piece', not least because he studied Chō's performances in the Japanese original and really tries to channel that into his own acting as opposed to trying to put his own spin on things.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with an actor putting their own stamp on a role so long as it doesn't detract from the character, but a lot of people are pretty protective of Nozawa's unique mannerisms - which is partly why Schemmel gets bashed so much.

Eh, I dunno...don't get me wrong, I get what you're saying, but I think "so much" is a thing of the past at this point. Dub fans have loved him for a long time, and if Kanzenshuu is any indication, a lot of fans who prefer the Japanese voice cast--even those who still prefer the Japanese voice cast--seem to have come around to liking him now that his portrayal fits the character well. Liking him more than Nozawa? Not necessarily, no. However, those who say his performance is "a torture to listen to" are almost non-existent now.Blade wrote:I mean, there's nothing wrong with an actor putting their own stamp on a role so long as it doesn't detract from the character, but a lot of people are pretty protective of Nozawa's unique mannerisms - which is partly why Schemmel gets bashed so much.

Maybe a lot of people, but not everyone. The same has been said of Bond and Batman, the first one you see is your favorite. While there's something to be said for that, it's not always the case, nor do I think it's rare that people like other incarnations other than the first one they see.Neshawn wrote:I think everyone's favorite is whoever was voicing him when they first saw the show, I personally like Sean S and whoever voiced him in the original release of dead zone circa 1997. the original voice for piccolo from those early releases on vhs I still think is the best piccolo ever! but in the end what they need to do is just stick with one cast of voice actors and STICK WITH IT! I definitely would not go around saying I always prefer the first for anything I hear. Definitely not. If we're going to split hairs, Schemmel is actually the second Goku voice I heard. Stephanie Nadolny was the first.

Schemmel is the 3rd Adult Goku I heard. But, of all the official English ones. He's currently the best (I'm hoping Richard Cox will give the 'Ocean' dub via Kai the redemption it needs after Kirby Morrow being iffy as Goku in my opinion). He's becoming more and more Nozawa like over the years. His performance in Battle of Gods was his best and most Nozawa like performance. Even more so than Kai and Kai was definitely heading toward that territory anyway. Don't think Schemmel needs replaced, I just think the script adaptation needs just a tiny bit more tweaking to include some of the Goku quirks lost through translation.

There might be a better Goku in there. But, they seem to be happy with just having Schemmel. I'm not a fan of him, but even I think he finally got the character now, as of Battle of Gods.
