Dub error, or what-if transformation?

Post by Deus ex Machina » Sat Sep 23, 2006 10:41 pm

I think this might have been addressed before, but I can't recall now. In Budokai 2, they give Trunks a SSJ2 transformation capsule, atleast in the North American version (both PS2 and GC). Was this an english-only mistake, or does it say the same in the Japanese version?

If so, it would be the first and only "what-if" transformation in the series. (not counting Tullece's, Nappa's, and Raditz's great ape transformations in Sparking Neo).

I know the transformation was in the Japanese version as well but I don't know what it was called. I just wanted to add that this "SSJ2" transformation also appears in Budokai 3 as well.

I looked up a Japanese strategy site and it's called スーパーサイヤ人2/supa saiya jin tsu in Japanese. However, Trunks did not get the Super saiyan 2 treatment in the first Budokai game(It was "Super Trunks" and "Super Trunks 2", which might mean USSJs). The reason for Dimps to give Trunks a Super Saiyan 2 transformation is beyond me. It might just be a mistake, although I'd rather believe it as a what-if transformation. It's most likely a mistake because Trunks hair wasn't any different from his Super Saiyan form, despite the addition of thunger and lightning surrounding him.

Edit- Also, check out the rumor page for much better explanation!

Edit- And here's the Japanese site I forgot to post the link to in order to prove my point that Dimps initially named the transformation as Super Saiyan 2. Link.

Oh right, the rumors page. I knew I had read that somewhere.

I thought it was SSJ2, and I have an idea why. Budokai 2 cut out a crap load of transformations from the first game (like for Freeza and Cell), I believe to save time. They probably wanted to give Trunks his second Super Saiyan stage, but didn't want to make a new character model. So the quick and easy solution was make him a SSJ2, add lightning to his regular SSJ stage, and voila.

I don't really have a problem with it, what-if transformations are great. It just would've been nice if the capsule came with some kind of disclaimer so as not to confuse people.

I don't know what to think of the Budokai 3 one since they seemed to cut out the what-if characters, but B2 had tons of what-ifs, so I never thought much about Trunks turning SSj2 in that.
