Was the Crane Hermit on the same level as Roshi?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Was the Crane Hermit on the same level as Roshi?

Post by Angelus » Tue Nov 11, 2014 3:12 am

I mean, the Crane Hermit certainly isn't a push-over right? I wonder what would have happened if he actually went in the 23rd WMAT so that he and his brother Tao can both have revenge.

But is the Crane Hermit even on Roshi's 22nd WMAT level? Crane is supposed to be slightly weaker than organic Mercenary Tao right?

Tenshinhan comments that Roshi is even stronger than his master. So, maybe he is around Roshi's level at the 21st tournament, but Roshi at the 22nd is significantly stronger.

Oh boy, if Crane is only 21st WMAT Roshi level, then even Yajirobe could wreck him. O_O

21st Budokai Roshi is nothing by the time of the 22nd Budokai, where everyone and their mother is stronger than Tao Paipai. He's never stated to be weaker than Tao. His official power level is 120, which would actually make him significantly stronger than non-cyborg Tao. He's also implied to be stronger than Chaozu, who could at least hold his ground against Krillin without psychic powers. If he's not stronger than Chaozu, then Chaozu's fear at Crane Hermit's threat to kill him wouldn't make much sense.

Why do you say "even Yajirobe"? Yajirobe was the fourth strongest guy in the series when he was introduced (behind Daimao, Goku, and Tenshinhan, but above everyone else).

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke

Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I think people forget that only Tenshinhan and Goku are stronger than Yajirobe (in terms of who go on to be Z-Warriors) when he is introduced. He's signficantly stronger than Chaozu, Krillin and Yamcha.

So yeah, I wouldn't put the Crane Hermit far below Roshi at all.

Yajirobe was fighting a "match level" Goku when they first met. Yajirobe was very surprised to see Goku seriously fighting King Piccolo. Think of it this way, Goku was just "warming up" against Tien during the 23rd WMAT but Goku fought at full power against Piccolo Jr.

Roshi was superior to Crane Hermit, as quoted by Tien.

As for Yajirobe, it's weird looking back and seeing him as powerful...

Yajirobe would have destroyed Crane and then ate him for supper.
