What do you think about Norihito Sumitomo?
Ok, I love his score for Battle of gods and I have no doubts he's a great composer...
But I think he's kinda lazy... I've searched for him and i found out somethings that are troubling me...
He overuses sampled percussion! I have been able to point out some of those samples in his works.
Examples:
Tekken Hybrid theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vHZ6HMIdgQ
has the same percussion as
Vegeta Enraged:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8h2ejkcVDU
Super Saiyan god's power:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPvW-jzBYTM
has the same percussion as one of kei's video's shown.
and Shenron's theme in the movie is exactly the same as
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pPddlXTIJI
And at the same time Sumitomo has another track has the exact same percussion as the nine tailed fox theme.
That means he tends to use the same sampled percussion for all his works..... that for me is a huge drawback! I mean if he used synthetized instruments and used the same sound fonts that would be different, because he would still be making the composition, maybe I am being a little nit picky here but well...
I am sticking with Takaki!. Sumitomo's music is really good but I can't shake the feeling that it's sometimes a little bit unoriginal because he can't really compose something different for pre recorded percussion. wellhe's better than yamamoto for sure.
But one thing is for sure, only Kikuchi and Takaki take it seriously here :S

Autoplagio LOL! I honestly prefer to DBKAI Yamamoto, although it has been plagiarized, good topics to enccajaban to perfection !. Sumitomo and his subjects is very poor, there are scenes that do not fit. For example: (in majin buu arc). when goku back in Tenkaichi Budokai. I do not really like the theme you put him, looked like a dance floor.

Regardless I love his battle of gods score and some of his kai tracks. I've even warmed up to some of his midi pieces mostly because I've been using them in scoring episodes. But I will not I repeat will not use that disco theme ever!

I'd probably like him more if he went for more melody and less ambience. That said, I think his work is solid; but there haven't been as many pieces of his that I feel fit the tone of Dragon Ball personally.
Here's hoping his score for the next movie delivers.

After this post I started to like Sumitomo more, but I would really hope he used mere for this style he used for Shibakane Hime Kuro, theoriginalbilis wrote:I'd probably like him more if he went for more melody and less ambience. Re: What do you think about Norihito Sumitomo?
I don't like it. For me, the atmosphere of DBZ was done by Kikuchi, that was part of why I did fell in love with the series as a kid in the first place (because most cartoons were US imports with techno-rock hell and somewhat cheesy).
DB felt more mature and more movie-like in comparison to American cartoons - sans Batman TAS - oh god, I was scared to hell as my father wanted to play me some cartoons as I was 5 years old in TV and there was Batman TAS with the dark stuff, ''violence'' and maniacal villains, it wasn't like Pingu or Cinderella at all. Of course I love the series still and even got all the DVD's of it.
Anyway, that's it. I must say, that Yamamoto wasn't half bad too, puting the new atmo into Kai and still it felt DB. There was the legal dispute, but he did a great job.
But Norihoto Sumitomo comprises what I don't like about modern Japanese stuff. It is boring, bland and generic - like without character. It's just this weird Japanese synth work that I can hear in Tokusatsu shows, TV dramas (which are the most evil and bad thing I ever saw on TV), some animes.
Even in the BOG, I did like about two pieces, which were mostly based on Chala-Head-Chala and that's it. Even those almost not known guys that did the last video games are miles better than Sumitomo.
Compare it to One Piece, Naruto or even the new Reconguista in G (Gundam) scores - they are great. Sumitomo's take on DB - nope, never again. And the placement in Kai doesn't help it either.

Re: What do you think about Norihito Sumitomo?
I think is doing a better work in Kai than Yamamoto. While Yamamoto had 3/4 soundtracks that i liked at max, Sumitomo is doing better.
That shitty disco sountrack is a disgrace though.
Talking about Battle of Gods, I think he did a great work. Even though like a lot of people, I will always miss Kikuchi.
Some soundtracks I loved from him:
Bulma’s Birthday Party
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS_7nRiIOU4
Eternal Universe (Brand New Friendship)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP_b3xDsVRw
Fun Bingo (I had to put this one)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wnfTbg ... m12bNXo-oC
The Legendary God
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8uZFma ... C&index=26
The Chosen Warriors (My favourite)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMYebVB ... m12bNXo-oC
Goku in Trouble
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNDxlp6 ... m12bNXo-oC
Struggling Against a God
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AySbzP6 ... m12bNXo-oC
From Kai, the only one I love and wasn't used in BOG as far I remember is this one (still don't know the name)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv5D9YV ... xSwVBaeRRg
And of course the preview soundtrack (Only Yamamoto failed in doing a good preview soundtrack)

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro

Sumitomo's the composer of 2015 Dragon Ball film? Aw, such a shame as we'd get far better music if it were composed by Hiroshi Takaki.theoriginalbilis wrote:I'd probably like him more if he went for more melody and less ambience. Here's hoping his score for the next movie delivers.

We pretty much don't know anything about Z Movie 15, let alone the composer. However, Sumitomo definitely is the most likely choice.

He was the one in charge of Battle of Gods' score and Kai 2.0 so unfortunately we're probably stuck with him sadly.Valerius Dover wrote:We pretty much don't know anything about Z Movie 15, let alone the composer. However, Sumitomo definitely is the most likely choice.
