I've been meaning to ask this question for a while but I wanted to find the right way to word it, I'm probably gonna word it wrong anyway so bare with me.Do the fans of the original airing of DragonBall (Z/GT) look down or see this generation of fandom as a bad thing. This may sound weird but when I was younger and followed TMNT I liked it. But now seeing it re-hashed again and again, it is the most annoying thing. Also do you think there is too much DragonBall going on..? I don't know. Please share your opinions.

I love it and it's good that it's popular. I wish it was a bit more popular in the UK though. Fans that annoy me are ones that get things wrong, I know everyone makes mistakes but when you're a total fanatic about something it gets annoying.

I don't know what you mean by this generation of fans. Surely the fans today are the same generation as the ones who saw the original airing. Unless you mean the original in Japan? I don't know.

Seems the biggest problem with fandom is people who presume and assume too much based on little or nothing and avoid, ignore, and bash the truth and seek to look no further than the speculations made upon unchecked thoughts.

And DB has got to have the worst Fanfic community of all time. People like Xyex are awesome and do it justice, but a trip to FF.net is...the most horrible experience one can ever...experience...

The topic? Oh yes. I don't see too many people "looking down" because most of us have been fans for more than 5 years, so we're part of that "generation".

Dubbies are what bug me. Don't be confused, though "Fans of the Dub" and "Dubbies" are two very different things. Dubbies are the snot nosed 13 year olds who worship Broly (Broli*) as god, thinks that the original Japanese version is crap because Goku is played by a woman, and won't back down on any random ignorant opinion they made up in their mind, like that Broly (Broli*) could beat up Kid Buu (Chibi Boo*) because his Power Level is 600 Billion and Boo's is only 559 Billion because they said so. I'm sorry, but I just don't encounter this same level of immaturity amongst fans of the Japanese version. Probably because watching something in a different language requires, uh, taste and maturity.

I think what you call the characters is very reflective of exactly when you started watching the show.

I grew up on the mid 90s Ocean DBZ dub. So I'll always call Krillin over Kururin, and Raditz over Raditzu. Simply because I watched and grew up with those episodes watching them over and over as they were rerun.

Consequently, I became curious about the rest of the show and read up on it online, and because I was originally introduced to later-era DBZ through fan subs and the internet, Mr. Satan will always be Mr. Satan, The correct abbreviation for Super saiya-jin is SSJ and not SS. and Future Trunks will always be Mirai Trunks to me.

What does bother me is the occasional elitism I see in response to people using dub names. Also, sometimes it gets a tad extreme to the point where I've been on forums and didn't even know who they were talking about (Torankusu, Ceru).

All in all, I actually prefer the community these days, now that it's dwindled down to the more serious fans, around the turn of the century it seemed like everyone was a fan, which would produce some exhausting internet arguments. (Goku vs. Superman etc).

So yeah, DBZ fandom is pretty great right now.

I love the new fans! Dude, I'm all for getting more people into this thing even if it is hella old, and maybe it's just wishful thinking but I think a lot of the negative stigma towards DBZ has since died down around here. In fact, most of the younger ones don't even know about it so I think now's a good time for a fresh start.

To tell you the truth I'm only a moderate fan. Yes, I take it seriously... but only here. Anywhere else if I'm asked about Dragonball I usually just tell them that I've heard of it and that I don't have anything against it and move on. I simply don't like being tied down by particular hobbies.

As for the generation things... I don't think Dragonball has been around long enough in America for there to be more than 2 (max 3) generations. The first ebing the people that were fans from the beginning. The second being fans from at least the last five years, and the theoretical thrid being anyone who has only recently discovered Dragonball. That being said there isn't a big difference between these generations. Most 'brand-new' fans learn pretty fast and will refer to the Japanese version more than not (this is based on my personal speculations made here) while the other two grouops are just ahppy they have someone to show off their knowledge to. In my opinion the Dragonball Community is is very unique in it's people and it's way of organization.

That may be true for some, but it isn't for me. I've continuously changed my personal spellings based on what I feel to be the best English Translation/Transliteration.

I only knew the Dub until 2 years ago, and I've been a fan since 1997. Yet, in a relatively short period of my fandom, I've come to a point where I can only enjoy the Japanese version of the Anime, and the Viz Manga. The Dub just...makes me wretch. I don't dislike those who like it, I just can't stand it after being exposed to the original.

But yeah, I used to spell "Krillin" "Broly" "Buu" "Tien" "Android" and so on, but now I've forced habit into "Kuririn" "Broli" "Boo" "Tenshinhan" and "Artificial Human". I feel stupid if I don't do it what I feel the way is correct.

Let's be honest... the distinctions between Jinzoningen/Android and Broli/Broly don't quite stack up against the the ones between Kuririn/Krillin and especially Mr. Satan/Hercule. No-one's going to look down on you for blurting out "Android" or typing it as "Broly".

And I agree that what you're first experienced with isn't necessarily what you're stuck with. I don't still use "Gokou," and I can actually pronounce "Kuririn" aloud, now. I don't love Ian Corlett more than Masako Nozawa. Etc.

I have no problem with people using dub names. I don't even mind people using Hercu1e. Sometimes I'll call Kuririn "Krillin" so I don't sound like some elitist snob. But I always refer to Tenshinhan by his Japanese name, because after reading Viz's manga it's hard to go back. I'm not sure what should be the translation of Broly. Some people calle him Broly, others call him Broli. I call him Brolli because it's closer to the pun. For some reason I have a tough time calling the Androids "cyborgs" or "jinzoningen". That's one habit I'll never be able to shake.

It's also somewhat debatable as to what is more identifiable. For example, the creature's name, and correct translation is "Gojira". But in every other country in the world, he's Godzilla.

However, I do get pissed when I see elitist snobs making fun of dub fans. There's no reason for that at all. It's the single most idiotic and childish thing to do in all of Dragon Ball fandom, IMO. The only reason they do it is to sound more intelligent or informed orwhatever, but they just come off as total nerds. If it wasn't for the dub, odds are they wouldn't be watching it in the first place.

I agree with you completely, thats what annoys the hell out of me about this current generation of fandom. But personally, I think DB's highpoint was 1999-2003. Honetly, its lost its steam as far as getting new fans. The middle school age fans are into Teen Titans(cartoon), Avatar, and Yu-gi-oh. Its really not that hard to convince them that a show is an anime. Even if it was made in France -_-

"Godzilla" seems to be the accepted way of spelling in Japan now, though.

In the movie "Godzilla: Final Wars", which is actually the final one, hence the name, the title screen is spelled in english "Godzilla: Final Wars" and the english speaking character, Captain Gordon, quite clearly pronounces it Godzilla.

Sorry to go off topic, but to relate it back, the difference between "Godzilla" and "Gojira" is sorta similar to something along the lines of "Broli" and "Burori", or "Tullece" and "Taresu" at this point. One is the accepted english spelling and the other is romanji (romanized katakana).

By 'generations' I was leaning towards the next "wave or batch" of fandom. Also, when I was talking about the 'first' generation I was referring to the original db fandom from Japan. It was mentioned before in the podcast about calanders still being made and I thought about and it took me back. DragonBall has been around for about 20 years. That is longer than I have existed. There are only a few things that last that long in pop culture: Star Wars +Trek, Elvis, and DragonBall ... I just think if I was to grow up with dragonball in Japan and if I was to see it now, I would be boarder-line distgusted believe it or not. Can you picture yourself liking something at the same level for two decades? I get bored with cds I buy after about six months lol. Well this was my opinion on that. I'm too lazy to quote people but I would just like to add that I am 18 yrs. old and if I can direct people to the DragonBall: Where we started thread:Click Here, you would see that I have been in the 'game' for relatively short time. Even though nine years is a long time, it fails to compare to twenty years, you know..

I guess I'm second generation, dub-wise. I didn't get into it until maybe July or August of 2000, but I remember how cool it was to not completely know how it ended, back before the Buu eps got dubbed...

I agree with you completely, thats what annoys the hell out of me about this current generation of fandom. But personally, I think DB's highpoint was 1999-2003. Well Broly is my favorite charecter, and I think it is a little odd that Goku is voiced by a woman. But I don't care about who Broly could beat up, and I think the Japanese dub is in the end a little better than the english dub. The music is better and the names are original. But I still stick to saying Vegeta rather than Begeta? (I think) Also I think Android is better than "Artificial Human # blah"

At least, that's my strong perspective on it, and my biggest qualm with Viz (though they achieve some redemption by pointing it out a few times). I still don't speak out against it when I see it all over this board. I still let it slip out as "Android" when I'm talking about it in real life every once in a great while...actually, it's been twice in the past year. Still, too many.

Isn't Cell more a massive-milkshake clone, which as we both know is made up of the Z warriors, Nappa and Vegeta, 6 Saibamen (possibly explaining why he resembles them the most), and Freeza and his Father. Ignoring the self-destructive-aspect, I'd hardly call him a cyborg, I mean he was raised in a test-tube rather than right out of a chamber that the others came out of. In that sense, it's just as hard to call him an Android. One thing that makes me think of this aspect is when everyone are first starting to sense his Ki, they confuse him with Goku, Freeza, and even Piccolo (whom he was battling at the time). So overall, wouldn't he be more a pure clone (with a bomb implanted) than a cyborg?

Let's look at a few definitions:

Cyborg - A human who has certain physiological processes aided or controlled by mechanical or electronic devices.

Although Cell supposidly has mechanical parts inside somehow, he's not a human, and ergo, not a cyborg. Other definitions specifically use words like person and human, too.

Clone - A cell, group of cells, or organism that are descended from and genetically identical to a single common ancestor, such as a bacterial colony whose members arose from a single original cell.

A clone is from (and genetically identical to) a single source. Cell is from many sources, and therefore, cannot be considered a clone.

Android - An automaton that is created from biological materials and resembles a human. Also called humanoid.

And just to clear things up a little;

Automaton - A self-operating machine or mechanism, especially a robot.

So really, going my the definitions listed in this dictionary, Cell is actually much more of an 'android' than a 'cyborg' or 'clone', in that he was created from biological components, and is not a modified human or a technical clone. Though the human resemblence is loosely applicable.

Who cares if Androids isn't the correct term? That's what they use in the dub. Therefore, it's perfectly acceptable in my book. There's no point in chewing someone out over somethng as small as that.
