Holy shit. Seeing how great his work was back then, and comparing it to his work today is legitimately depressing. Yeah he still has the occasional good shot, but those are exceptions at this point.AjayLikesGaming wrote:Yeah, the art isn't great (especially compared to his 'golden age' work for the show).

Dear god... something tells me this movie Is going to suck like BoG and that "Yo! son goku and his friends return!" ova. a few years ago i wanted toriyama to make more DBZ but at this point i just want him to stop.

Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Fukkatsu no F"

For being the one 'intense' cut in the trailer I'm not quite sure I could call it 'intensely' drawn. I think if it was drawn sharper and looser it would have a sense of Gokuu literally 'burning'. Shida did a better job at capturing and instilling emotion when he did One Piece Episode #590. The placement of the layout for the shot doesn't quite capture a sense of weight, either.
What Character Designer Umakoshi Yoshihiko did for Saint Seiya Omega Episode #51 is a good example of getting that wild sense of emotion out onto paper.

Yamamuro is not Uchiyama level of bad though. But yes, I'm not a fan of Yamamuro much either. I'm a bit old school when it comes to DragonBall. I did notice the Vegeta shot and the Freeza/Goku shot. However, I did think the animation looked better than BOG, especially for the first trailer release. BOG's trailer looked REEEEAAALLLLYYY low budget quality than this. This looks better by a lot actually. The in-between motion was much smoother, and the character's faces were more consistent and in proportion compared to BOG's trailer (and finished product to be fair).
Yamamuro is what is wrong with the franchise though. Looking at the new DBZ game coming out (or is it out... I don't play video games anymore...) the character models in the games look much closer to their manga counterparts than Yamamuro's designs that are used in animation.
How the anime was as close to the manga's style as possible:

I'd much rather prefer to see these types of designs:
Also, I don't understand Piccolo's eyeliner that he has now... It wasn't there before:
I do have to admit that they don't look unwatchable, but they stray further away from it's manga counterpart.

My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

So True. Despite everything, at least Yamamuro is keeping a somewhat consistent DBZ look, something Toriyama can't really do nowadays. I've never been Yamamuro's biggest fan, except for that Goku vs. Majin Vegeta scene which is pretty smooth. He makes the characters look extra pointy... Kazuya Hisada does that too, but I like the way he does it, and his cuts were always awesome.Blade wrote:Is it just me, or is that not worlds away from this?

I still won't be a fan of late-DBZ style. Their faces look so weird.Chuquita wrote:Someone posted this on the 2ch thread:Spoiler:
Compare to what I posted, it's like the Saiyan arc is leagues better in style, proportion, symmetry, in motion, in action shots... really.
Guide to emotions ( did they get Goku's correctly...? You decide!)

Shimanuki and Hisada for the win. Cockpit looks great on its own, moves really well, but it looks less Dragon Ball, so it's 3rd for me.
Re: Official On-Going DBZ 2015 Movie Thread: "Fukkatsu no F"
Hisada and Shimanuki had some really good episodes but they're no longer doing that kind of work anymore, just like Yamamuro. Masunaga Keisuke is probably my favorite of the Dragon Ball Z animation supervisors thanks to how wild and intense he and the others at Studio Cockpit managed to make their episodes.

That's a very good point and thanks for offering the unique perspective I thought you would! I entirely agree.JulieYBM wrote:For being the one 'intense' cut in the trailer I'm not quite sure I could call it 'intensely' drawn. Watching it back in motion, it's almost a still shot shaking around the screen at speed. Not exactly the dynamism I'm used to as a pretty big fan of Kill la Kill (and near enough all of Trigger's work). I guess I should probably give up all hope of Dragon Ball ever hitting the level of something like Sword of the Stranger (heavy spoilers).
I'm glad you brought up Shida. It makes me unbearably sad he isn't the frontrunner for the series nowadays. His work in Battle of Gods was outstanding. I can only dream of what his control would bring.
Welp.
I'm still extremely excited for this film. It's more of the characters we know and love!

Really liking the music that's in the preview for some reason. I know it's just generic trailer music, but I think it really gives the whole thing a sense of scale. I think we're in for something a lot bigger than what Battle of Gods was.

Ah, the music! I knew there was something I forgot to ask about earlier. Have we had any listing for the composer at all yet? I'm kind of conflicted - I loved what Sumitomo did for Battle of Gods, but from what I've heard of his Kai work...not near as impressive. I'm guessing there's probably a pretty safe bet it's still him though, right?

On the bright side, at least we won't be spending large amounts of time in Bulma's backyard this time around. :3
You can't do "It's a party!" 3 times in a row after all, thankfully.
Ooh! And I'm "kickin' it old school" now, apparently. :3
