Are the Dragon Boxes still the best option for Japanese fans
I much prefer the Japanese version, and am quite the sucker for the limited appeal of the Dragon Boxes. That being said, I am almost always in favor of higher resolution, as I think most shows benefit from it (Cardcaptor Sakura blu-ray was lightyears better than its DVD release).
But I wasn't really feeling the blu-ray version, at least not the first one. And the second release seems like its mostly for fans of the English. It's cropped isn't it? If so, not exactly definitive edition

If you're a crazy person with loads of cash to spend, there are the Japanese DVD singles. Unfortunately, there are no subtitles and probably would take up so much shelf space...

I would prefer the premium boxes in Japan instead of the singles. The sheer amount of singles would probably be more expensive to collect that the premium boxes!
I have the Funimation Dragon Boxes. It caters to the Japanese fans, which is why I prefer it.
Why can't Funi make a release with as much dedication and care as the DBoxes?
I mean I look at the blu ray sets and they just scream "Dragon Ball in HD", nothing else. Where's the bells and whistles? lol
EDIT: And no I can't understand Japanese so subtitles are a must for me. I really wish Funi did Dragon Boxes for the other series

Lol what I mean is the Japanese DBoxes had a gorgeous big-ass box, a pretty lengthy fullcolor guide, an action figure, etc.

Re: Are the Dragon Boxes still the best option for Japanese
While I love the original cast of Dragon Ball I never actually bothered to import any of the Dragon Box releases from Japan because FUNimation already had their own versions and I took them instead.
Dragon Ball = Saga Sets
Dragon Ball Z = Dragon Box Z
Dragon Ball GT = Singles
TV Specials (Z, GT) = Singles
I've got all of the 20 Fullscreen Dragon Ball movies on DVD from Pioneer/DVD for the novelty of experiencing the films in 4x3 AR but I really hope that FUNimation releases a US Dragon Box: The Movies or makes a new remaster for them because the Double Feature just isn't that solid.
M#13 on the DF release has the Japanese audio muffled while the Single is crystal clean. Oh and, the DFs don't work on R2 DVD Players even though the covers and discs advertise to be.

The thing is I dislike how inconsistent it is to have different versions of each. In Japan they had it all in 5 boxes. Whereas here the Saga sets are different from the DBoxes. I believe the DBoxes had a better restoration than the Saga sets. The original dragon ball saga sets were not as bad as the orange bricks but they still were not as good imo.dbboxkaifan wrote:While I love the original cast of Dragon Ball I never actually bothered to import any of the Dragon Box releases from Japan because FUNimation already had their own versions and I took them instead.

Also, they didnt have the Japanese previews. I hope someday we get ALL the other boxes.

Re: Are the Dragon Boxes still the best option for Japanese
Saga Sets - R4 edition 1st print came with a two boxes for all of the Amaray DVDs while the 2nd print was in two fat-pack cases which still looks pretty nice too.
1st print

2nd print

Second box is thinner because it has less discs than the first one (the covers are reversible just like Manga UK's - side A with logos and side B without -- although they left the Madman logo on BOX 2).
The Saga Sets have unfiltered image and unzoomed as well as Japanese episode credits so imo, it's better than the Blue Bricks.
