Boo Arc Box 2 Released - Discussion & Screenshots

Post by Ajay » Mon Dec 08, 2014 4:28 pm

The second box of the Boo arc of Kai is now out on Blu-ray. Here's a selection of screenshots from three episodes featuring different animators of varying quality.

Image

FULL ALBUM: http://minus.com/mez3Z9AEJn3W7

Positives:

+ Unobtrusive DNR that cleans the grain while retaining image detail.
+ As far as cropping goes, a majority of the scenes make good use of the extra frame width to create solid 16:9 compositions.
+ Crisp line art and smooth shading in all scenes bar those that have focus issues on the original negative.
+ No obvious artifacting or banding during heavy motion and dark scenes.

Negatives:

- Green tint remains an issue (particularly obvious during scenes with lots of yellow).
- Some scenes feature heavy ringing around the line art.
- Haloing can something be seen in clouds as a result of poor colour grading.

It's quite hard to be positive about this set out of the box as the green tint is particularly distracting. However, some simple colour correction does offer a passable remastering of the series.

...Shame about Kai as a whole though.

As far as comparisons to the Season Sets go; I suggest checking out my post from another thread - http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... 20#p843129 - detailing the things to watch out for when making judgements.

Thanks for the gallery; this looks fantastic. I'm not noticing much of a green tint, though.
I know that I'm preaching to the choir here, but seeing how good this looks makes me very upset that they cropped it.

This might help:

I always find the green is super obvious as soon as I remove the tiniest amount of green from the overall image.

Ooh. That is bad.
Do you know how consistent it is from scene to scene?
Would a simple adjustment in your player be enough, or does it vary in intensity?

A fellow forum poster, Puto, has said he runs the same script for every single episode to successfully remove the cast though I personally find it varies.

Has anyone ever come up with a plausible reason for why Toei slathered the footage with a green tint? Also, do the Japanese sets feature the Japanese broadcast version or the International cut?

I'm curious about this as well.

Just the broadcast version.

I've seen something floating around about Toei trying to help prevent seizures from flashing lights, keeping in mind the old Pokémon Porygon episode incident. That does sound a little bit far-fetched, though. The 'poor computer monitor calibration' theory is out there, but it's difficult to believe Toei was that continuously inattentive. Then again, FUNimation has had some recent quality-check issues itself, given the missing episode titles in its season Blu-rays.

Did they forget to include a few title cards? This is the first I've heard of this.

The tint varies a little, but it's consistent enough that using the same script every time results in a 'good enough' looking video, even if it's not 100% perfect.

I'm sold! Whenever FUNimation puts them up for pre-order on Amazon I'll make an order straight away!

The screenshots look gorgeous but especially this one: http://i5.minus.com/iq7kKiIsz9kWT.png this would look great as a framed poster. :P

I think those are different key animators, not to mention the latter cut was given a higher number of drawings so that the hair might flow.

Just the one on "Ghosts from Tomorrow".

Thanks for this ALG! Look much better then Kai 1.0 imo, just a shame that FUNi's version will be 69 episodes. Probabaly pick these up when FUNi do the season set collections.

The only thing that bothers me a bit is the sharpness filter that they applied. The 16:9 crop does not really bother as Kai is supposed to be a modernized version of DBZ, and besides Toei's cropping seems fairly well done. They do not lose important details and the green tint does not really bother me either. Yes, they could have easily removed it and sometimes when I think about it it does irritate me a bit, but the overall quality still looks decent to me so I can look past that. I still think they could've easily removed more filler, but it seems that the filler they kept in, is only for the episode to its full 20 minutes. Still, though, Would've been great if they could've made the episode count around 50 episodes.

What makes you think Kai 2.0 had a better remasterisation than Kai 1.0?

Kai 2.0 as is looks quite nice but I really enjoyed Kai 1.0 remastering from Q-TEC.

Holy cow those DBox comparisons show just how pale the characters look in Kai. I'm not usually a stickler for those sorts of things but it really stands out here.
