One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-releases.
They keep re-releasing DBZ over and over and yet, they have never gone back and re-dubbed Goku for Season 3. I understand back in 2007 that Sean was apparently unavailable when they did the partial re-dub which is why Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin etc all got redubbed but Goku didn't which made it awkward to watch cause the difference in VA quality was jarring. Goku should have definitely been redubbed from Ginyu Assault up until the point where he goes SSJ.
They've re-released Season 3 how many times now and yet they never went back and did it despite multiple chances. Sean is an awesome VA now but he was just starting out then, and it's almost unlistenable listening to that old 99 performance for Goku.

If you want a good dub, then why not just watch Kai?

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
I think we're at the point where a lot of this is nostalgic. I'm sure if they re-dubbed it, a lot of people would be unhappy. And besides, it wouldn't even matter if they re-dubbed just Goku's lines. The root of the dub is the script, they would need a whole new dub. It's just... it's bad.tvfan721 wrote:They keep re-releasing DBZ over and over and yet, they have never gone back and re-dubbed Goku for Season 3. Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
Schemmel is also in a unique/weird position because he plays the lead character despite not living in the area (Dallas), and living in the area is normally a prerequisite for any anime role that significant. He revealed at one point that when he moved to New York, FUNimation had toyed with re-casting the role for this very reason. That was ultimately avoided when he volunteered to keep flying back to Dallas on his own money. That gradually transitioned to FUNimation paying him a little extra for airfare, until it got to the point where they now pay for his airfare entirely...which, as Schemmel noted, almost never happens, and only happens in his case because he plays the lead character in FUNimation's most financially successful property.
So, any re-dubbing that involved Schemmel would have automatically been more expensive (and even more expensive than that if you take into account the need to hire a writer for new scripts, Chris Sabat to direct, an audio engineer to record and mix the new sessions, etc.). As it has been pointed out, that may not be worth it at this point. FUNimation has a nostalgia-driven fanbase that keeps DBZ selling, and those who want a better dub have it in the form of Kai.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

They can't keep 'George Lucas-ing' Dragon Ball Z. It comes to a point where they just say Enough is Enough.

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
Will a few re-recorded Goku lines really matter since we've all seen those episodes like a zillion times? I honestly can't see anyone from FUNi's cast dubbing any Season 3 stuff again, i mean they first dubbed it in 99 (a dub that save for nostalgia was awful on all fronts), then they redubbed a-lot of it in a dub most would see on par with maybe the early Ocean dub, then they finally made an accurate dub for it with Kai which pleased the hardcore fans. There is no reason for them to dub that stuff again, especially since there is now new DB material coming out of Japan.

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
I'm not sure if it's true, but I read even if he could, Sean didn't want to redub those scenes. He wanted to keep the performance as is, essentially as a record of "this is how far I've come".

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
By now, it would be absolutely pointless to rerecord a single character's lines for the main Dragon Ball Z English dub track. We'd end up with a Frankenstein dub, with one high-quality performance stitched into a fabric of mediocrity. The shifts between actors would end up even more jarring because of Sean's exponential improvement over the years. Like it or not, the current English dub is here to stay.

But the dub already is a Frankenstein's monster of a dub. 99 Schemmel talks to 07 Sabat.

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
My point exactly and why re-dubbing Goku should have been done. Those 15 or so episodes starting from Ginyu Assault are a mess because Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, Ginyu, and Frieza have all been re-dubbed and sound pretty good. Goku however, was not redubbed and it's quite jarring, definitely hard to watch. When they went back and re-released DBZ for the Dragon Boxes, Blu-Rays etc, they could've easily re-dubbed Goku's lines from Ginyu Assault to Transformed At Last to remove that jarringness.
Like I've said before, the Goku VA performance from Ginyu Assault to Transformed At Last is the ONLY really bad VA performance left in the dub. They fixed everything else where needed. It's a shame they couldn't go back and simply re-dub that too.

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
It's not just Schemmel, none of it has been uniformly redubbed. The redubbed dialog stops at different points for different characters. There is plenty of bad 99 dub left.

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
We will have to agree to disagree on that one. The remaining 99 dub voice acting is decent enough to remain, not great by any means but decent enough that it doesn't need to re-dubbed. It's just those Goku lines that really needed it.

Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
We do indeed because out of everyone, it's Sean's lines that needed redubbing the least. There's still the supporting cast and some of them switch actors, and no matter how much redubbing is done, some actors will always be terrible (Vollmer, Schemmel as Kaio, Young, etc.)tvfan721 wrote:We will have to agree to disagree on that one. Re: One thing I find unexcusable about the constant re-relea
I'm not saying it isn't one already -just that redubbing Goku now would make it an even bigger one. It wouldn't even improve the dub by much, since the other voices would still drag the overall quality down. Sabat had not quite reached his current level as a capable voice actor, and many find Stephanie Nadolny's Gohan and Linda Young's Freeza fundamentally problematic. Anything short of a complete new recording of every cast member (which will never happen, of course) would be a wasted effort.ABED wrote:But the dub already is a Frankenstein's monster of a dub. 99 Schemmel talks to 07 Sabat.
