Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Fair enough. In any case, I wonder if there is the SLIGHTEST chance they may up animation budget for second arc... 1st one had way WAY too many bad episodes which even BD fixes can't cover up highly lower quality
Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Doubtful. Even if the budget did increase it doesn't mean it would look good. Shida Naotoshi is only doing storyboards for the series and no other talented animators seem interested in working on the project.Basaku wrote:Fair enough. Episodes 1 & 5 looked very good though, 5 in particular. I defintiely consider whoever animated these 2 as talented (even if not top top league)JulieYBM wrote:Doubtful. Yeah pretty much this. I was just curious since a lot of stuff I dislike you may like, and vice versa.Saiga wrote:Kid Buu has his own criticisms about Toriyama, I think he was just curious about what you were referring to than implying nothing Toriyama has done was bad.Basaku wrote:A lot of stuff in BOG for example? Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
To be honest about things being rushed, I find plenty of anime, and shows in general, are very fast paced and skip over development of plot/characters/settings. That is why Kai was made. I mean, to get young people to sit through all of DB or Fist of the North Star is damn near impossible... even my goddamn friends, some are even older than me, wont watch old anime because it is, in their words not mine, "ugly, slow, badly animated".
UGGGGHHH
They are missing out so much. Their loss.
But now it's so common to have a 12 episode series filled with 20 minute episodes to flesh out plot and through a multitude of different tones in one episode alone to skip over long portions of dialogue. Even the new Jojo anime is just blasted through, what would be slowly done over 3 or 4 episodes if it was made in the 80s or 90s along with DB and FotNS. Even Gurren Lagann fell into this trap of just blasting a ton of story into your face in a single episode.
I actually miss the old days of drawing it out so when the climax of the story happens, it is so much more of a big deal, such as with any major fight in DB, where it takes a long ass time for Goku to even fight the big bad, but when he arrives, oh man, is it satisfying! For example, when Goku arrives to fight Piccolo Daimao... but even the tournament set up has that same feel; it draws out the time spent building up to the main fight, and I think that is why the tournaments themselves became a staple in the series, and made DB so successful (compare that to the Pilaf arc, which probably caused Toriyama to teeter on the verge of cancelling the series).
That tournament build up is rarely seen in modern anime, if at all. Blast people with feels in 2 episodes, have the big bad fought off in another 2 episodes, have a beach episode, and finally a finale. Ther you go, roughly a typical modern anime.

My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Attitudefan: What's more funny, is that it seem some Idol themed shows, like Aikatsu, are already over 100 episodes, and while it add new characters, it doesn't feel rushed at all, and characters from previous 2 seasons do not dissappear at all

Good trailer, looks better than Dark Kingdom. A lot of people I know aren't gonna bother with Season 2 since they didn't like Season 1.
I think I dropped Kai around, early Android arc? It's just nothing new.
Meanwhile in Toei-land, Digimon is getting a reboot. I wonder how that will go.

More like a sequel to Digimon Adventure 02. The character designs look lovely but with the series premiering in April I suspect it will look horrible given how many other shows Toei Animation is currently working on.Kid Buu wrote:Meanwhile in Toei-land, Digimon is getting a reboot. Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
I...don't know about that. It only has the original cast, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just retconned Adventure 02 out of existence.
For the record I enjoy 02 a lot, and hope they get the original actors back.

Usually only complaint I hear folks say about season 2 was the ending with guys mad Sora married Matt instead of Tai.
Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
The first two seasons of Digimon are my favorite.
Conversely, the first two seasons of Sailor Moon are my favorite. Season 3 gets a lot of hype but man did it drag, a problem I have with every Kunihiko Ikuhara anime.
Actually, the Saiyan/Namek arcs are my favorite DBZ arcs too. First half of Buu Saga is actually really good, but the second half is a bit of a mess.

I'm entertained that more former precure are being added to Crystal's VA roster. :3 (Chibi Usa's Cure Happy and Pluto's Cure Aqua).coola wrote:Attitudefan: What's more funny, is that it seem some Idol themed shows, like Aikatsu, are already over 100 episodes, and while it add new characters, it doesn't feel rushed at all, and characters from previous 2 seasons do not dissappear at all

I remember there being a good chunk of humor/banter between Usagi and Chibi Usa during this arc; I have no idea how the more serious Crystal will pull that off (or write around it?).
I'm going to continue watching it; I stopped watching Kai because its faults made me sad, but Crystal's faults cause unintended comedy. :3 (And I still like the character designs in theory, and once in a while it does hit the beats it's attempting to hit; but it's still nowhere near as good as the 90's Sailor Moon anime was imo.)

Are you referring to the original anime or the manga?Chuquita wrote:=

The original anime. I presume the manga is probably more serious in tone (I should probably check, I have the manga, I just haven't read it since Kodansha was releasing it in English. ^^; ). I know Chibi Usa has a more in-depth back-story in the manga; that much I remember because of how much it surprised me.Kid Buu wrote:Are you referring to the original anime or the manga?Chuquita wrote:=

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
So apparently according to peeps at Sailor Moon forum, we might get the next two arcs adapted after all.
On one hand, I would love to see a proper adaptation of Sailor Moon S and SuperS.
On the other hand, I can't trust Toei of 2015 to do handle it.
Why can't Toei handle their reboots well? Makes me scared for Digimon.

Yes, incredibly so. But hey maybe Kai and Crystal have been disappointing because they put all their effort into Digimon?Kid Buu wrote:So apparently according to peeps at Sailor Moon forum, we might get the next two arcs adapted after all.

I wonder why Toei is rebooting all their series (DBZ, SM, Digimon) anyway. Out of ideas?

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
No, they're adapting from plenty of new franchises, these ones simply have domestic and international appeal.Kid Buu wrote:I wonder why Toei is rebooting all their series (DBZ, SM, Digimon) anyway. Out of ideas?
A monthly, 47-minute an episode remake of Dragon Ball would be nice. Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works has had three double-length episodes in its first cour and I've really enjoyed their feel. Of course, it's doubtful Shueisha would push Toei Animation to make such a thing any good, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

They're not rebooting DBZ because they've not revealed a new series, just a movie every few years.Kid Buu wrote:I wonder why Toei is rebooting all their series (DBZ, SM, Digimon) anyway. Out of ideas?
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
They need more money for the Precure mafia. But I wouldn't say that they're out of ideas just in an idea drought I guess, I mean the most ambitious thing I've seen them do recently is have Gen Urobuchi write Kamen Rider (Kamen Rider Gaim if you're wondering). Other then that Toei has just been playing it safe I guess.Kid Buu wrote:I wonder why Toei is rebooting all their series (DBZ, SM, Digimon) anyway. Out of ideas?
I can safely say the Digimon reboot is mostly cause there has been a resurgence of the Digimon fandom in recent years so they're riding that wave while they can.
Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.
