Was there any actual hope at beating Beerus in BoG?

Candy Vegetto was still stronger than Buu, in fact he didn't lose any power at all. Biscuit Beerus would probably be able to endure a tea and milk assault.

Yes, Vegetto was a hard candy. If you shot a hard candy like the one Vegetto was out of a gun at someone it will kill them. If you shot a digestive biscuit out of a gun it is hardly going to kill someone. Beerus can't really negate the properties of being a digestive biscuit. If it gets wet it gets soggy and falls apart. Really a hard candy is the worst thing to turn a super powerful character into because of its durability. A digestive biscuit has no such durability.

If everyone went fusion, they might have won.
Super Vegeto + buu absorbed (gotenks + gohan +piccolo & others)
add in aerial just in case.

If they'd asked Shenlong to bring Tarble over, then Gokū and Vegeta potala-fused into Vegetto, and then finally Vegetto turned Super Saiyan God with the power of the other five (Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Tarble and embryo-Pan)... yeah, then he probably could've managed it.
