(Semi-OT) Dr. Slump and Arale release in Japan

Post by Blitzen » Sat Oct 07, 2006 9:18 pm

Just recently, two Dr. Slump DVD box sets were scheduled for release in Japan. They're similar to the Z boxes, in that there's two of them, and each contains a booklet, and are both 100,000 yen.

First set is out in March, 2007

Second set is in September, 2007

apparently this will come with the 5 TV specials, Penguin Villiage Daiorama/set, Booklets, deluxe boxing etc (I imagine it being similar in size and storage to that of the Dragon boxes).

No word yet on the 90's series.

Just when Toriyama thought he was finished with returning to his past work, it pulls him back in again. I'm sure there's got to be at least some kind of mentioning of him. I mean it is his work after all (or at the least, it's based off of the manga he did)...

Cool, Slump-Box! I think I'll pass however, not quite in the position to drop 100000 yen on anything right now....

More like 200,000 ;)

Anyway, I imagine an R3 will come along eventually.

Well, it's about TIME. I was wondering when they were going to put Dr. Slump on DVD!

I wonder if there'll be individual releases, though, because there's no way I can get 1,600 bucks by the time it's released and it's likely to be out of print the same month.

Now that I doubt will ever happen, considering the series' age. And I doubt you could rake in anybody on "FROM THE CREATOR OF DRAGONBALL!!" alone nowadays. :/

Nonsense, considering that anime older than Dr. Slump are getting DVD releases.

Well, Viz does that "from the creator of Inuyasha" on some of their titles... Anyway, Dr. Slump IS from the creator of an ultra-popular series, there has been some prior exposure from the cameo in said ultra popular series, and the manga is being released stateside. So it's not as if the series is unmarketable(since there's already some of that going on).

Didn't Harmony Gold get it back in the 80's?

FUNi recently got the license for Crayon Shin-chan. They could easily grab either Slump series. And with the way they milk Dragon Ball, they could easily get anyone into it.

But man..

$800 for the Slump boxes. T__T

That price says to me " so near yet so far".
I'd dub it if I had it, though to be fair one ep was challenge enough.
On on DVD forums say this:

Box 1:
Contains the first 120 episodes.

Selling points: Deluxe box, special booklet, picture label discs, digital remastered picture, bonus disc (5 TV specials, project image collection and event footage) and a Penguin Village Figurine Set with 15 figurines.

If it happens, think Funimation should do it and if so, still use the guys from the DB crossover eps?

Man. I just checked the first box description. 22-freakin'-discs. Yeesh.

Please tell me they're not doing the whole reservation bit they did with the Dragon Boxes. Hopefully they'll print more than enough like they did with the Movies Dragon Box. x_o; I'm truely trying to figure out how I can afford to pick the first one up.

It's especially tricky when I'm planning to attend Sakuracon next year in April. T_T;

Dude, every box was done via a preorder system. This is generally how large-scale releases like this are done and won't change for Slump (infact, they definantly won't, because there is no way to obtain a 'more than enough' quantity without making a loss or not reaching complete sales potential, more often than not).

To be honest, don't let this sort of stuff get in the way of your lifestyle and those you care about. It'll come out in singles.

Or not. a lot of Toei's boxsets aren't re-released in singles.

Considering this is one of the more important Jump/Toei titles, which is what made Akira Toriyama famous in Japan, the chances of these coming out via singles is much, much higher than say, Saint Seiya, which was done in five smaller, cheaper boxes.

Sales on single DBZ discs basically show that limiting such a popular series to two nerd-only boxes is damaging to profit.

Unless we're somehow going to pull in the Dr. Slump / DragonBall crossover(s), this isn't on-topic for this forum at all, and I'm leaning towards locking this.

Thanks.
