Framerate is abysmal, though. I can still barely stand to look at it. It's desperately in need of a re-release.
I see. I have that movie pack. The frame rate on that is fine, but has a really dated dvd menu and the alternate angles. It is missing a chapter selection because of that.

So it was fixed. My bad. I've been living under a rock for the past 10 years.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

^Just out of curiosity, how is the title card in the old set? It's actually the only title left in Japanese on the White Brick (or any of the movies, I believe)

Ah, yes, the 4-Movie Pack we usually refer it by "4-Movie Pack" or (disgracefully) "Remastered" but I've never read that term.

For the old release it's "3-Movie Pack" or "Movie Box" which is still my favourite release due to the Japanese credits and unremastered quality so I can see more of the detail despite being a 50/50 release, just like the 4-Movie Pack.

It actually WAS remastered for real, for what it's worth.

What all are the disadvantages of the Movie Box (3-pack)? Are the discs different from those of the singles?

Right, Puto but those crushed blacks and oversaturated colours are freaking horrible like who the hell at FUNimation thought that'd be good? :|

On the 3-Movie Pack you get all three movies with the Japanese credits but then the 4-Movie Pack has improved picture quality, framerate for M2 while at the same time losing details and better audio track. It's a mixed bag but for those looking to get an English release with Japanese credits then the Movie Box is the pick.

Unfortunately FUNimation never released M1 unremastered so it's only available with English credits, crushed blacks and overly saturated colours.

FUNimation has yet again done the same with the HD DB movies 1-4. :(

It would be awesome if Funimation would re-dub Sleeping Princess and Mystical Adventure. Their current dubs have dated big time.

They need to redub a lot more than that.

I wonder if they'd cast Clinkenbeard for Goku?
Probably.

They already did that for the redub of the first movie, so presumably if they redubbed the other DB movies they'd also cast her in those for consistency.

The first one needed a redub more than the others did, though. Up until 2010, it didn't have an uncut dub with Funimation's cast and the original score. Movies 2-3 already had that.

The DVD quirks

So the reason the chapters were missing was because the Japanese dub had a completely different order than the English dub. Much to my surprise, the English dub had the old Peter Berring opening from Dragonball in 1995, "Get that Dragonball". The dub was missing the Toei logo with the splashing waves and the intro came before the prologue. The Japanese dub, if selected, has the logo at first, the prologue and then the opening credits. The credits were in terrible shape and had a weird black bar appearing on the bottom from time to time (only the Japanese opening credits had this, not the dub opening). I really love "Get that Dragonball" so I have no complaints in seeing it over Mystical Adventure. It's an amazing opening. Anyways, there would be no way to have chapters as the dub is out of order from the original.
This is what I wrote in my review of the DVD and the movie. You can view the whole topic here

Oh man. It's literally been over 5 months since I've caught up with DBZ releases and since I've posted here, what's happened since July?

DBZ ended after the Frieza Saga.

Let's see...

- The extended release of Battle of Gods came out on home video. Snap that mess up!

- The Blu-Ray Seasons have been completed; nothing official announced as far as Blu-Ray releases of DB, GT, or the movies. Though, HD versions of Dragon Ball Movies 1-4 have appeared on FUNimation's digital video service.

- An unsubstantiated rumor cropped up online that we may soon see an re-rerelease of the DBZ movies with a "new" remaster, assumedly similar to the process used for the TV series.

- The Buu arc of Kai (aka "The Final Chapters") hasn't been announced for an American release yet, though it's been running in several countries already. One can assume we'll hear news about it by the summer.

- Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, with the bonus chapter DragonBall Minus, has released by Viz. That's the closest thing we've had to a legitimate "new" release this year.

- DragonBall Xenoverse will include roughly 20-30 mins of new animation for the game, presumably in the form of cutscenes.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Didn't FUNimation release an uncropped screen/sample of DBZ Movie 3 in 4x3 HD? I personally would like to watch them in HD and in Fullscreen even though the proper aspect ratio is Widescreen but most of them are no better than a DBZ episode, anyway.

People everywhere say that all the movies were meant to be seen in 16:9, but... where this information actually came from? It does not look like “with 16:9 in mind” to me...

I think the idea is that the movies were made with the knowledge and foresight that there would be cropping. This contrasts with the cropping that is done to the television series, whether it be through Kai or a liscensor fiddling with the footage.

I think that's where the sentiment comes from. Obviously the movies were animated in 4:3. I'd say that its all personal preference at that point.

Well, wasn't it Toei that stated as the default AR for it?

It's a shame the FUNi Z Movie Singles are compressed to DVD5s so the picture quality really took some hits at times, then again, that was Early FUNi but if it were now it'd be DVD9s.
