Are the Dragon Boxes still the best release for Japan-fans?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Are the Dragon Boxes still the best release for Japan-fans?

Post by YamiJustin » Sat Jan 24, 2015 5:23 am

I bought my Dragon Boxes when they came out and loved them. But as the years have gone by they seem to not hold up as well. I stayed away from the Blu-ray releases because they are incomplete for fans of the Japanese version. Also, they are not in anywhere near as nice packaging.

What is the best version of DB to own? Would it still be the Boxes, or the latest blu-rays?
Or are there chances of a newer, better collection coming out?
Maybe Dragon Box Blu

It really depends on what you want.

The Dragon Boxes are currently unmatched when it comes to including everything in one package (NEPs, JPN title cards, grain preservation), but they aren't without their flaws (some color issues at times, DVD bitrate, even lower bitrate on the US release, and for completionists, no US score on the US release).

Funimation's Blu-ray sets have issues of their own that you're probably well aware of (No JPN title cards, automated grain-removal, cropped to 16:9), but they can look good at times. The colors can be a little intense, but for the most part they're passable. Blacks aren't crushed nearly as often, either.

If you're a fan of the original Japanese version of Dragon Ball, you sacrifice less with the Dragon Boxes than you do with any other release. Until the Level sets get rebooted, or we get a similar set down the road, we're stuck with what we have.

Maybe Dragon Box Blu ray ?
The Dragon boxes without a doubt cause unlike the blu ray's the quality of the boxes are good from beginning to end while the Blu-ray's only get good in the Buu saga while the rest is bad to ok.

There will definitely be another release but I doubt it'll be good cause as of now they have put out 7 releases of Z and each one has a huge problem with it.

They had trouble getting a limited release DVD version so the chances of getting a Blu-ray version is 0%.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

To this day, it still yes.

However, for those that don't want to buy the Japanese Dragon Boxes there are perfectly acceptable replacements.

FUNimation releases;
* Dragon Ball = Saga Sets
* Dragon Ball Z = Dragon Box Z 1-7 (although now out of print so some are expensive)
* Dragon Ball GT = Singles

The Saga Sets only feature the Japanese Episode title cards while Z/GT have everything (Japanese title cards, original logos, NEPs).

This is what I went with and I'm satisfied.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Are the saga sets still the best if you don't care about Japanese title cards?
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)
Kai >>> Z
Current Roshi/Kulilin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SSJ3 Gotenks

If you don't care about the Japanese Episode title cards then the Season sets are ideal.
