DragonBall in a school paper? What?

Post by Kaboom » Wed Oct 18, 2006 4:58 pm

(Sorry in advance if I'm a little incoherent; my brain's overclocked right now)

I'm pretty sure this will end up causing discussion, but I'd just like to announce that I'm using DragonBall ("DragonBall Z," specifically) as material for a paper I'm writing for my COM101 class. The assignment was to write a lil' compare/contrast paper on some aspect of entertainment media. I picked anime. I'm comparing the dubs to the original japanese, mostly pointing out a lot of the reasons why things may be changed in the dubbing proccess, but mostly the disadvantages to it.

Anyhoo, as you might've guessed, DragonBall is one of my generally "bad dub" examples, along with, to a much greater degree, One Piece, while Naruto and Bleach are my examples of "good dubs." No real reason behind them as choices, other than that they're some well-known ones that I'm familiar with.

Okay, I'd better get (back) to work on this thing.

Sounds pretty cool, I just hope this topic doesn't turn into a dubbie vs. subbie thing. Post your paper when you're done!

Too bad it's a rather cliche and boring topic now. Especially after the anime version of the "Thousand Flower Garden" thing where every otaku and his mother was critisizing Funimation. Perhaps your teacher will think that such a topic is new and interesting despite the fact that someone somewhere has done somthing similar. Anyway, that's interesting and I wish you the best as far as the grade goes.

Hopefully it'll go well. My teacher doesn't seem to be the otaku type, but so long as I'm clear, concise, and explain whatever terminology I use, she'll probably find it interesting.

Good luck with that Kaboom. I have a suggestion that might help out with this project. Along with the paper, you should bring in soundbytes or even quote people from the forum about dubs in general.

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Best of luck with that. If you're gonna do something like an oral presentation, then I suggest using footage from the anime and compare them to the actual manga as well.

I did a paper on Toriyama back in 8th grade. There was hardly any information on him on the web. It was quite annoying. I agree with the rest, dont choose a side on the topic, just show examples.

It's not that big a project. It's just a small paper, and I'm only using "DragonBall Z" as one of my references. Nothing fancy.

Isn't this kind of a moot point now that anime is released on dual-language DVDs?

Oh, Lord, I did the same thing in 8th grade! I remember my only source was this one website that had half a paragraph on Toriyama, and the rest of the stuff would be completely DragonBall related. And I actually got a good grade on that paper anyways!

But yeah, as long as you just use DB as one of many examples, then you should be good :D.

Not completely moot. I'll be pointing out some of the ridiculous and unnecessary edits in the old dubs (forbidden fruit tree, anyone?). But I'll probably put a mention of how DbZ's releases have been "repaired."

Back to work! (Progress: Approximately 2 of 5-6 pages done! DB not mentioned yet!)

Just freshman English Composition at a county college. That's why I can get away with writing a paper about anime; at this level, it doesn't mean anything other than to show how well you can write papers.

(Progress: About 75% done. DbZ reference since included!)

EDIT: BTW, I referred to Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, too. Does that rock, or what?

You know, I've been considering writing about Dragonball for some of my college admission essays but frankly, it creeps me out. Is there really so little to my life that I have to write about cartoons? ( a really, REALLY good cartoon, but still....)

Well, I wish you the best of luck with this and actually it's a pretty good topic that has quite a bit of range outside of just DBZ.

I wrote about Batman for one of my college admission essays. I would say that it's probably not a good idea to write about Dragon Ball Z if you're just going to explain what it is or the fact that you like it, but if you could honestly and passionately connect it to you personally and explain how it exemplifies something significant about you, go for it! For instance, my dad was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer two years ago, and just recently died from it. I got into Batman throughout this period, and I was able to explain how it helped me throughout this difficult time, understand certain things about my relationship with my father, and how it incited me to turn my grief into something productive and meaningful. Perhaps not as productive or meaningful as beating up homicidal maniacs or banging Catwoman, but I think you see my point. Writing about something like DBZ or Batman will not only show that you have unique interests (at least as far as these college admissions people are concerned, I would imagine), but it'll set you apart from others and also show that you truly find meaning in your interests.

Of course, the prompt I was responding to asked me about a creative work that was meaningful to me, so it wasn't as though I decided to just throw my Batman diatribe into any old essay. Also, I'm not an admissions officer, obviously, so this is all kind of my speculation, but I think the argumentation is sound.

Hey, congrats on finishing the paper! Post it and let us know how you did when you get back! :D

It does indeed rock. 8) What was the referance about? How it parodied other anime shows?

No, how the dub version gets around how immensely Japanese it is by joking about how Japanese it is.

Haha, now you absolutely must post it.

Or, if your teacher has it, tell us what you can remember, lol.

Well, paper's done, ready to be handed in, but I wanna put it here for you guys to read, too. But I'd rather not put it as a post, since it's 7 pages long.

So can anyone point me to a good (i.e. free) file-hosting site that does word documents?
