And, in Japan, the movie was called "Super Saiyan Son Goku" so they were most likely marketing the crap out of the then-new Super Saiyan form.

Bio Broly

The feisty insane SSJ sells well. lol.

I'm not surprised by these numbers. Naturally, the Cooler movies were the highest selling of their time, given that it is Cooler. Fusion Reborn had the attraction of Gogeta. Bojack Unbound is the only one to star Gohan after the Cell Games. And BoG is the first DBZ flick in years--not to mention it's part of the canon.

Highly doubt FoF will beat BoG in sales, but since it's bringing back a familiar and iconic villain, I can see it doing better than the other films, at the very least.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Oh I guess that's it then though I'm surprised it would have been that of all things. I'd have thought the movie being announced would have garnered more interest.

Well the most popular villain in the Japanese DB fandom is Majin Buu. Followed by Freeza and then Cell.

Majin Buu is really the most popular? It's not like I have anything to go on to doubt that but with how they brought Frieza back into the anime a couple times, had him in GT, had him in Fusion Reborn, had him in Plan to Eradicate the (Super) Saiyans, had him in Battle of Gods and are now having him in Revival of F aswell as having Frieza's brother in two movies I had the impression that he was easily the most popular.

I wouldn't have thought he was even as popular as Cell.

Freeza is the Joker of DBZ. He's Goku most well known enemy and probably sells the most merchandise. Cell is popular but I don't think he reaches the same level as Freeza does. I think Buu is more popular then Cell since he was the final villain in the series.
