A difference in Goku's voice (FUNimation English dub)?
A difference in Goku's voice (FUNimation English dub)?
I was watching some old trailers for dragon ball stuff, and noticed in one for, i think sleeping princess in devils castle, that Goku's dub voice sounded different than in the show. Since finding this site, i have become more of a fan of the Japanese version of dragon ball, and have come to dislike Goku's voice in English, at least when he was a kid. So seeing that i own the movie i decided to check to see if it was actually different, and it was. I'll say i actually kind of liked it, it was listenable. So my question is does anyone know why it might be different, like what was the state of the dragon ball dub during the time they dubbed those movies. Also did this person play Goku in anything besides the movies, and can i find those anywhere.

Re: a difference in Gokus voice?
Sleeping Princess and Mystical Adventure were dubbed ca. 1997 I believe before they had hired Stephanie Nadolny and before they had begun to dub Dragon Ball. Ceyli Delgadillo voiced Kid Goku in those two movies and later Dende in the original dub for DBZ.

Yeah, pretty much just Movie 2 released in 1998 and Movie 3 in 2000. You can also hear Delgadillo's Goku voice in some Cell Arc flashbacks, including the infamous Red Ribbon flashback montage.
Also, Movie 1 doesn't have Nadolny either, instead it's Colleen Clinkenbeard.

The original DB Movie 1 dub, done prior to DBZ, has Saffron Henderson as Goku (who played him in those TV episodes 1-13 and then went on to be Gohan when they moved to DBZ).TheGmGoken wrote:That's the movie 1 redub. The original movie 1 had a different VA
While I was able to find my archives of the Pilaf and Shuu voices, I unfortunately was never able to find my archives of the Goku voice samples they put up for a poll. Delgadillo and Nadolny were in there, but I can't for the life of me remember who the other two might have been.

Shouldn't it be on behind the voice website? I believe they have every voice sample and actor for a lot of anime dubs.VegettoEX wrote:The original DB Movie 1 dub, done prior to DBZ, has Saffron Henderson as Goku (who played him in those TV episodes 1-13 and then went on to be Gohan when they moved to DBZ).TheGmGoken wrote:That's the movie 1 redub. While they might have voice samples of every actor who actually *played* Goku, it's highly unlikely they have audition samples from an opinion poll of people who never actually got the job.

That is a damn shame.

Has anyone tried looking it up on the WayBack Machine? It does sometimes manage to preserve audio.

What's funny is that FUNimation's original upload of the GT opening rap song MP3 was still hanging out on their website for yeeeeeeeeeeeears (and might even still be there if you know the URL), but I don't think these files lasted that long.

Re: A difference in Goku's voice (FUNimation English dub)?
It's like they already had the voices they wanted in mind picked and gave the fans 3 other terrible options to guarantee their picks. Voice 2 for Pilaf sounds like a voice that Shawn Spencer would use on an episode of Psych.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.
