Goku also teases Vegeta because he can't transform on his own, and needs Bulma's machine to transform.

Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Not really worse than growing long hair which disappears once you turn back. Or losing and regrowing eyebrows.

I always just saw it as the brow ridge being so pronounced that it would cover up the eyebrows, not that the eyebrows were lost.

I would argue that SSJ4 creating and removing pants is weirder than all of the above.

Even worse is that, when Goku/Vegeta went Oozaru, their clothes ripped. After becoming SSJ4, they are given new clothes, and after returning to base, they have the same clothes as before.

Two years ago, I would have tried to come up with some explanation for that.

Now I just go..."huh."

Obviously SSJ4 comes in with a built in version of Piccolo's "most metro attack" 8)

Here's my speculation. Vegeta needs Bulma's machine every time he transforms, and can't reach SSJ4 at will, because he didn't pass through the Golden Oozaru stage. He grows a tail as part of the SSJ4 form but loses it as soon as he turns back to normal. He really doesn't need a tail in the long run, though he would of course need one to reach the transformation naturally.

Now the question is "do you need a tail to go SSJ4 after you've achieved the transformation through the golden Oozaru stage".

At the end of GT, 100 years after Goku left with Shenron, Goku returns to visit Goku Jr. and briefly watch the 64th Tenkaichi Budokai. He has grown back to his adult body. He doesn't have a tail.

If we take into account what we know, and assuming Goku had a peaceful time during those 100 years, there's really no logical reason for Goku to remove his tail if it would prohibit him from ever reaching the SSJ4 transformation again.
Surely by that time Goku's base form would be more powerful than he was as a SSJ4 while fighting Omega Shenron but that doesn't justify abandoning the form. Plus it is a form completely different from SSJ1, 2 & 3 in the way it consumes/uses Ki. Constantly wasting energy isn't really a concern with SSJ4 so as strong as Goku potentialy would get, using the transformation would always be a plus.

I personally believe that once you go through the Golden Oozaru stage and achieve Super Saiyan 4 you can always willingly go back to it with or without a tail.

Couldn't he have his tail hidden under his clothes though? I know Goku doesn't do that, but this is Goku after 100 years. Habits change.

I assume yes. Vegeta got his tail back due to artificial means and than transformed. That's probably why his tail went away after his energy wore out. A make shift tail wore off after a forced transformation.
If I recall SS4 is like a Saiyan/Great Ape hybrid right? Than if the Great Ape needs it, than I suppose SS4 needs it as well. I always assumed that since Son Kun did not have his tail in A Hero's Legacy that SS4 was just a form Goku needed for the GT baddies. Once peace returned, he ditched the tail.
Why have it? He could accidently transform into a Great Ape and kill people or something. Its all in the tail!
