Re: Akira Toriyama influenced by Peanuts?
I should start a thread on influences to Toriyama. Things like the Muscle Tower sequence as being similar to Bruce Lee's movie "Game of Death" or the many other martial arts films you can see he swiped ideas from (The Brave Archer and many other Shaw Films, Jimmy Wang Yu's " One Armed Boxer and Master of The Flying Guillotine movies [also one of Tarantino's favourites] which also influenced games like Street Fighter), Ultra 7 (capsule monster), Superman movies, Martial Arts Tournament movies like King Boxer (5 Fingers of Death), Jackie Chan films (which he has stated he was influenced by), Chinese and Japanese mythology, etc. Fun if you've also watched a lot of this stuff. Anyone have any documentaries from Japanese TV on Toriyama? The man seems painfully shy. I don't even think its his own voice on Dr. Slump when they have his robotic or Bird character on. But at the time of his greatest popularity, he was probably too busy to even make time to do a taping. Lots of people are like that...unfortunately. That's why I liked shows like Prisoners of Gravity and the many interviews with SF and comics creators at the time.

Please do. I'd definitely be interested. My interest in martial arts movies was only a passing one about 10 years ago, so I barely remember the contents of many that you've mentioned. I would love to see all the potential references that Toriyama used!dougo13 wrote:I should start a thread on influences to Toriyama.

Even if Toriyama didn't purposefully draw DB like Peanuts or other American comics, him doing so for Dr. Slump all that time molded his style just enough for the similarities to still show up in Dragon Ball, methinks.

Wow! That is an interesting observation. It does seem pretty similar in style to the Peanuts.
When I first watched the series, I thought it was very reminiscent of Looney Tunes.
