I always thought calling a person by their last name sounded rude, to me Akira sounds more friendly then saying Toriyama, but oh well it doesn't really matter.

You don't normally say "Toriyama" but "Toriyama-san" which basically means "Mr. Toriyama" in that context and if you think about it, it might not sound so rude for you.

With the announcement of the movie being licensed by Funimation, what do you think we'll get in terms of trailers? Will we get the Japanese ones dubbed? Or will Funi try and keep some stuff past trailers revealed a secret for the general audience?

I don't mind not using honorifics, since, well, English doesn't use them and they're not actually a part of the person's name (and generally you can infer level of politeness from context and such), but I do say Toriyama, yeah.

Vegeta is a fan favorite in the US so I'm sure they'll make sure people know he has a big role in the movie unlike the Japaneses trailers which have only hinted at it.

Politeness is more important than sounding friendly in Japan. Calling the man "Akira" implies a familiar relationship with someone who may or may not be in the same social class as you.

Basically, if you've never met the guy, don't call him by his first name. It's rude.

It's really the same in the US. We call the president Obama, not Barack. We call professors and teachers Ms/Mr or Dr. *last name*. And we refer to anyone in writing by their last names, such as writing about Jobs instead of Steve. It's just proper unless you have familiarity with the person. =P

"AT" really annoys everyone (if not, just me then). Just wanted to conclude with that.

Well, it's almost a geographical thing in the U.S. From what I've seen, in the South, it is more common to find people on a first name basis regardless of familiarity than in the North, regardless of social class. While in Japan, politeness is ingrained into every aspect of their language.

Resurrection "F" = a Resurrection Fuck = getting back into the dating world with a one-night stand after a relationship breakup. Is Funi being witty or something? The "of" is necessary for the title to make sense grammatically.

I've never, ever heard of that before (Not that I don't believe, just that those connotations are far, far removed from the vocabulary of today) and I doubt most people would even know that context.


I said this in the other thread, but "Resurrection 'F'" sounds fine and makes sense to me. It reminds me of the Phrase "Generation X". Plus, the double-f sound in "Resurrection of F" is a little weird to me.

It does, but it's still the whole thing of putting your teeth to your bottom lip to make the sound. You make the two sounds the same way.
