DB/Z/GT Dubs
DB/Z/GT Dubs
Since I'm a little bit lost on the availability of English (FUNi) dubs of the DB/Z/GT franchise, I've got some questions:
- For DB: How many FUNi dubs are available? In other words, did they ever do a re-dub for a specific release, such as the Digitally Remastered release?
- For DBZ: The Digitally Remastered releases are the only ones that include a full English audio track (so English voice-cast + English music) for the uncut series, am I right?

Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
There are two dubs for Dragon Ball that were done by FUNimation. The original used the Ocean/Westwood dub cast for the original 13 episodes back in 1995. Then in 2001, a redub of the first 13 episodes along with a dub of the rest of the series was made. It aired on Cartoon Network (Toonami) and was released on DVD (and probably VHS) via singles in 2003 (although the singles contained many episodes, unlike its Dragon Ball Z counterpart). The blue Season Sets that were released in 2009 used the same dub that they did back in 2001. That was the last official FUNimation dub for the series. The dub done in 2003 used the original Japanese music, so that was never an issue.Raymon wrote:Since I'm a little bit lost on the availability of English (FUNi) dubs of the DB/Z/GT franchise, I've got some questions:

As for Dragon Ball Z, the only release that does not include the full English audio track along with the dub music is the Dragon Box Z release. Dragon Ball Z has singles (often packaged into box sets) that often contained three to four episode. Aside from that, in 2007, the Orange Season Sets were released (the "Remastered" set). On top of that, as you may know, in late 2011, FUNimation released Blu-ray versions of the "Remastered" version of the series. All of these releases have the original English dub along with the music. The only one that doesn't, as I mentioned, is the US Dragon Box Z release. Although, the only release that has the original dub from 1999 is the singles. The 2007 "Remastered" set redubbed several lines for Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, Kuririn, etc. for "Season 3" and possibly even "Season 4" and in later episodes, removed things like voice filters, etc.
Hope that helped.

It sure did, crystal clear! Thanks!
The singles are not uncut, are they? And I guess those are the ones that start from episode 53 (?) onwards, because another dub was used for the first episodes?

If memory serves me right Funi released both edited and uncut versions of the singles for each DBZ release that came after Saban-era episode 53.Raymon wrote:It sure did, crystal clear! Thanks!

If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out.

Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
If you're wondering, the best way to get the series would be as follows.
-Blue Bricks for Dragon Ball. It's the only way to get the entire series uncut, and they're also the most affordable.
-Orange Bricks or Blu-Rays for Dragon Ball Z. The only way to get the entire series uncut with the US music as an option, as well as the JP score.
-Green Bricks for Dragon Ball GT. They're simply more affordable than the singles and have the JP music option in addition to the US score. The Special is included as well.
-DB Movies have a Complete Set with all 4, a White Brick, so to speak.
-Both DBZ Specials are available in a SteelBook Double Feature.
-The 13 Original DBZ Movies are available through 3 Movie Packs making it easy and convenient to get them all. Movie 14 is available on its own.
So, what are you interested in?

Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
As an owner of the remastered blu-rays for Z, I must say it is an excellent product. It has the English dub and the option to listen to it with either "American Broadcast Audio" (Faulconer's score) or Kikuchi's score. There's also an option for the Japanese dub with Kikuchi's score as well and English subtitles.
If FUNimation had released it in 4:3, it would've been the perfect release...

That would be exactly what I'm looking for! Uncut, no cropping, and the choice between full JAP or full ENG audio. Too bad it doesn't existSpiritBombTriumphant wrote:If FUNimation had released it in 4:3, it would've been the perfect release...
Thanks for the help guys!

Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
How about the Dragonball Goku saga sets. They are also uncut and are identical in quality to the original broadcast I believe. Though, its going to be difficult to aquire all the sets. I was lucky enough to bump onto a post of a user selling it on the forums.Valerius Dover wrote:If you're wondering, the best way to get the series would be as follows.

Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
Here's the thing about the singles: the uncut episodes pick up at episode 68 (Ginyu Assault), which is episode 54 if you're going by FUNimation's old system) through the end of Z. Then, FUNimation went back and released the "Ultimate Uncut" singles, which are episodes one (The New Threat) through episode 27 (Nimbus Speed). Episodes 28-67 aired on Cartoon Network, but never officially got released. Maybe one more DVD of the Ultimate Uncut series was released, but it was the Spanish version (I am unsure about this, but the Spanish version which came out at the same time always advertised one more DVD). Unfortunately, the only 4:3 option you have for those episodes is the Dragon Box Z, which does not have the FUNimaton music.Raymon wrote:It sure did, crystal clear! Thanks!

You know what my story is? I started collecting the Dragon Ball series in 2005. I had Dragon Ball's Path to Power DVD, some GT DVDs, the Android Saga box-set, Imperfect Cell Saga, Perfect Cell Saga, World Tournament Saga, Babidi Saga, Fusion Saga, and Kid Buu Saga. And I cooled off on collecting it for a while because there was just too much and I said to myself that I can't continue spending money on this stuff. Then, the Season Sets came out in early 2007 and it got me hyped up. I bought "Season 1" and thought nothing of it. Bought "Season 2" and thought nothing of it. Bought "Season 3" and then realized that there is no way in hell that I can live with the episodes being chopped up and faded out. So I did a little research and then eBay became my best friend. I now own every single that was released for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and the movies. It ALWAYS bothered me that they didn't continue the Ultimate Uncut line. But your only options are getting "Season 1" on DVD, getting "Season 1" on Blu-ray, or getting "Dragon Box Z 1."
Sucks, I know. The singles were perfect for dub fans. Well...crappier quality, but still perfect because it's not like they aired in Dragon Box quality on TV.
The Goku Saga is edited, though. Those are the original first 13 episodes done by the Ocean/Westwood cast. If you mean Saga of Goku, that set is exclusive to Region 4 (not U.S.). I bought all the Australian (Region 4) sets without realizing it and could basically only watch it on my computer until the Dragon Ball Season Sets came out. They're good, but still, no reason to get them over the blue Season Sets, in my opinion.Saiyan_nation_ wrote: How about the Dragonball Goku saga sets. Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
Collecting the Seasons is far more cost effective, though. They're usually around $20 each, while you may wind up spending more than twice that amount on a single with three episodes at times. They also have a dub that's fully uncut and mostly consistent all the way through.

Hmm ok I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just confused by this and need to understand better what I'm actually getting. Here's a pic of the sets I have in my possession.TheGreatness25 wrote:Raymon wrote:The Goku Saga is edited, though. Those are the original first 13 episodes done by the Ocean/Westwood cast. Here's the back of one of the dvd's, it shows the region coding NTSC with 1,2 and 4. These are brand new and unopened.

These are playable here, no?

It also states it's uncut. I do agree though its way more cost effective going the blue bricks route, which I own as well they are great too!

Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
It's 4:3, but it's still cropped/zoomed more than the saga sets. The saturation is also boosted too much, and, if you prefer to watch the series in Japanese, it's annoying that the English title cards will be thrown in your face every episode.Valerius Dover wrote:What's wrong with the Blue Brick footage, though? Re: DB/Z/GT Dubs
Just in case anyone is wondering, this is how it stacks up:
Episode 108 - FUNimation Single

Episode 108 - FUNimation Season Set

Episode 108 - Dragon Box

In case you guys are wondering how I got the pictures, I put the DVDs in and in PowerDVD, I used the Screenshot feature (I did not manually screenshot it), I had it saved in the original file size too. I know I've had issues with this stuff in the past, hopefully I got it down to be accurate quality. Even if not, you can still use it to see the difference in cropping and in the very least, you can tell there are color differences.

Don't use PowerDVD. It tends to distort the quality and the colors. Try MediaPlayerClassic instead
