In Japan, as the result of a questionnaire research whose theme is "What anime do you think has the best score?", Dragon Ball ranked 2nd in the ranking. Surprisingly, it beat Ghibli's movies!

3rd Detective Conan - 5.0%
4th Ghost in the Shell - 4.7%
5th Attack of Titan - 3.9%
6th Castle in the Sky - 3.7%
7th Kiki's Delivery Service - 2.9%
8th My Neighbor Totoro - 2.6%
9th Lupin III - 2.1%
10th Fist of the North Star - 1.8%
The voters' opinions about Dragon Ball's score:
"The BGM fit battle scenes well." (Male, 30 years old)
"I get excited when I listen to the score even now." (Male, 28 years old)
"I think it really fit the show because it still raises my spirits today." (Male, 33 years old)
Kikuchi's music in Dragon Ball seems to still hold a special place in kids at the time.

I find that choice a bit strange... I'm not denying it's a good soundtrack but to be up there amongst those other masterpieces? Anyway glad to see NGE getting first place, absolutely incredible soundtrack there IMO.

Shunsuke Kikuchi.What else ?
Great news.

"Uncle Kikuchi wants you !"
Yeah, and I really hope that Dragonball scores led them to discover his other amazing works.kei17 wrote:Kikuchi's music in Dragon Ball seems to still hold a special place in kids at the time.

Awesome! Make you sure you post this in the "Would DBZ Have Been As Successful with the Original BGM" thread!
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

It beat AoT's OST?

Seriously? Second....with that Kikuchi score? Riiiight. The plagiarised Yamamoto score was far better than that was.

The article says that the 383 voters were all non-student adults, so AoT might have beaten DB if younger people had been included.fadeddreams5 wrote:It beat AoT's OST?

Seriously, no Saint Seiya? It had an amazing soundtrack:

But I'm glad to see Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star got some love. Toei may not be the best at animation, but damn if they don't get amazing soundtracks.
Could listen to these shows' soundtracks without the shows and enjoy them.

Let's just be glad that our show ranked #2. It solidifies its timelessness in the Hall of Fame for amazing anime. =)kei17 wrote:The article says that the 383 voters were all non-student adults, so AoT might have beaten DB if younger people had been included.fadeddreams5 wrote:It beat AoT's OST?

For your information, the Yamamoto score was seriously hated by the Japanese fans. Everyone seemed happy when it was gone without any exaggeration.Bullza wrote:Seriously? Second....with that Kikuchi score? Riiiight. The plagiarised Yamamoto score was far better than that was.

That's very interesting. How do people feel about the Sumitomo score? And why would they hate the Yamamoto score?kei17 wrote:For your information, the Yamamoto score was seriously hated by the Japanese fans. The same thing happened in the US. People don't like others messing with their childhood shows. =Pkei17 wrote:For your information, the Yamamoto score was seriously hated by the Japanese fans. So bad taste all around then as the Yamamoto score was much better than the Kikuchi score. Having watched the Kai dub, the very unfortunate score shift from Yamamoto to Kikuchi would have made the show almost unwatchable for me had I not found the Yamamoto score revival thread. For your information, the Yamamoto score was seriously hated by the Japanese fans. Agreed. Japan is just crazy, I guess. And thanks for the heads up on that thread, I need to check it out...Bullza wrote:So bad taste all around then as the Yamamoto score was much better than the Kikuchi score. Re: Dragon Ball ranks 2nd in "Anime with the Best Score"
I cannot believe the Yu Yu Hakusho score didn't even rank. I love the Kikuchi score in dragon ball and z, but always wished there was more electric guitar than the few insert songs like for the Tenkaichi Budokai and openings (ie like in Yu Yu Hakusho but less eerie).
Does this mean the entire Dragon Ball series including Z or just Dragon Ball?
kei17, not sure if you followed Yu Yu Hakusho at all but if you did/do, what is your opinion on that music/ do you know what generally the fan approval is?

Well, I feel like Dragon Ball has one of the most epic/beautiful scores out there. But it's with no doubt a good position.

Re: Dragon Ball ranks 2nd in "Anime with the Best Score"
For clarification, when they say, "Dragon Ball," do they mean Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, or just Dragon Ball? Either way, I agree that Kikuchi's score belongs on that list. I'll also say that I agree with Sagisu's score for NGE being ranked at no. 1.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Kikuchi and Sagisu next to each other?! Voters confirmed great taste.
Also, multiple Hisaishi entries? That's cheating!

Re: Dragon Ball ranks 2nd in "Anime with the Best Score"
I always loved Kikuchi OST and knew that it was loved in Japan but not to this extent.
I mean for it to beat out the likes of AOT, Detective Conan and Miyazaki's films is really unbelievable. Just goes to show you how much of a timeless classic Dragon Ball is.
I'm kinda shocked One Piece and Naruto Shippuden aren't in the top ten. Those shows have awesome OST's.

That being said, I personally find it really boring for the most part. The majority of the songs sound too similar to one another in my opinion
Exactly, it's one of the dreariest scores I've ever heard and incredibly repetitive to boot. It also sounds as dated hell and makes the show appear far older than it really is.
