Then why does Gohan look different at the tournament from every other supposed instance of his Super Saiyan 2? He was healed by Kibito or a senzu after every time he lost energy, so he wouldn't be any weaker in any of those cases.
I'm not saying that his aura is weaker because he is weaker, I'm saying that his aura is weaker because he is rusty. But I'm not saying that his aura is always like that:

So, his SS2 aura appears like his SS aura, but it also takes its regular form in different points.

If he was a SS2 against Dabra & Boo, he can be a SS2 during the Videl vs Spopovitch fight as well.

Gohan turned MSSJ when Videl was being beaten and had one bang. He later went SSJ2 for Kibito. He hand one bang, his hair was slightly different and had all the traits of SSJ2. Against Buu and Dabura he had his MSSJ hair with all the MSSJ traits.

Vegeta's comment that Gohan was even more pathetic then he thought at the Budokai plus him and Goku saying that could be Dabura without one asking the other about SSJ2 points toward

MSSJ Goku/Vegeta>Dabura>/= MSSJ Gohan.

You know which supposed instance of SS2 really baffles me? When Gohan was training with the Z-Sword. Why in the world would he be a Super Saiyan 2 for that? He can already lift the sword with just his base form strength, and he can freely control his power level in SS1 to make it just slightly easier and still get good results.

But he doesn't have that control at Super Saiyan 2. He'd literally be a hundred times stronger than he needs to be, and getting nothing out of the training. All while wasting a lot of energy just from maintaining the form itself. Even if someone could craft halfway-believable reasons why he would be at Super Saiyan 2 for most other cases, this one just doesn't fly.

Prove that he wasn't a Super Saiyan 2. My evidence is that his hairstyle is different from his hairstyle in SS, and the same with his hairstyle in SS2. Your evidence is that the aura is the same with the one he has in SS, but different from the one in SS2.

And this is why this endless debate exists. Both sides are correct. You just pick the side that makes the most sense to you.

If it took him SS2 to pull it, then I guess he went from SS2, to SS, to base during his training to slowly get used to it.

There is also the question: Why would Gohan hold back when he is giving his everything when he tried to destroy Boo's egg, and even tries to give more than he normally can by trying to get angry?
But he doesn't have that control at Super Saiyan 2.
Says who? Goku did have control over his power as a SS3, enough control to lower it below Fat Boo's power.

Look, I'll admit that at some points, it would make more sense for Gohan to use Super Saiyan 2. If I could go back and change things, I'd add lightning bolts when he fires off at Boo's egg. Maybe against Dabra too. But that's just not how it is.

Refer back to my earlier post. Toriyama wrote and drew this manga for children, not adult nerds who plop individual panels into Photoshop and squint at the details. So just step back and spend 10 seconds thinking of Dragon Ball the way its intended demographic would.

Which do you honestly, genuinely, zero-percent-bullcrap think that Toriyama would use to show little kids that a character was using Super Saiyan 2? Minuscule differences in the tufts of their hair, or big spiky lightning bolts in their aura?

Do you sincerely, earnestly, from the bottom of your heart think that Toriyama would confuse the youngsters reading his work by just drawing Gohan differently from ALL other Super Saiyan 2s for no good reason, except for one time when he didn't?

Do you whole-heartedly, truthfully, deeply believe that Toriyama would have Goku give a demonstration of the two different Super Saiyan forms, but mislead the little children by not telling anyone that those are ONLY how the forms look for Goku, even though they look the same for everyone but Gohan except sometimes?

I don't know how anyone else sees it, but Toriyama's artwork for the manga was always more consistent than his seat-of-his-pants story telling. You can trust the art. Gohan was drawn like a Super Saiyan 2 only once, and drawn like a Super Saiyan 1 every other time, and that's how you know which form he was using and when. It's really that simple. Take that, and base your theories and explanations of the story on top of it, not the other way around.

Goku can raise and lower his SSj3 (and presumably SSj2) power at will, yeah... but Gohan's been out of practice for 7 years, while Goku's spent those years training harder than ever.

The only way Gohan should be able to raise and lower his power at will in SSj2 form is if SSj2 just inherently lets you do that without having to get used to the form first like what was required with regular Super Saiyan. By the time the Buu saga rolls around, Gohan probably hasn't gone SSj2 (heck, maybe not even regular SSj) even once since the Cell Games, so he wouldn't have been able to learn how to control his power better in that form the way Goku and Vegeta would.

It is a stated and confirmed fact Gohan only went SSJ1 to try and save Videl. Had this scene not took place the SSJ2 group would have a lot of ground to stand by but the scene cripples the hair argument.

Goku and Vegeta say nothing when Gohan goes SSJ1 and he does it instantly. When he goes SSJ2 Vegeta starts talking about how weak he has become, it also takes Gohan longer to transform and I don't know if this is anime only but he has to become a SSJ1 before he becomes a SSJ2.

Gohan's aura matches ever SSJ1 we have seen in the series. Gohan when he goes SSJ2 for Kibito has the same aura every SSJ2 used in the series.

Gohan most likely use his rage for Videl being beaten and then his frustration for thinking he was going to be kicked out of school to go SSJ2. I don't know what it is other than bad writing but he was using SSJ1 post budokai.

Sparks don't appear when Goku and Vegeta turn SSJ2 in BoG
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)
Kai >>> Z
Current Roshi/Kulilin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SSJ3 Gotenks

Doesn't appear with SSJ3 either when Goku used it against Beerus.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Toriyama didn't draw/animate BoG, and Toei was never consistent with sparks.

Yes, I truly believe so. He did the same thing with base & Ultimate Gohan.
Do you sincerely, earnestly, from the bottom of your heart think that Toriyama would confuse the youngsters reading his work by just drawing Gohan differently from ALL other Super Saiyan 2s for no good reason, except for one time when he didn't?
For us adults to be confused on the subject, it seems Toriyama has screwed up for some reason, or he wanted to make Goku & Vegeta look stronger than the untrained Gohan. Assuming that Gohan is a Super Saiyan in the points where he doesn't have sparks, he drew SS Gohan differently than he was before, he has Gohan hold back against an opponent that is as strong as Cell, and hold back when a guy much more powerful is about to be revived, while at the same time he tries to surpass his limits...
Again, what does Goku have to do with this?
I don't know how anyone else sees it, but Toriyama's artwork for the manga was always more consistent than his seat-of-his-pants story telling. You can trust the art.
Can we really trust the art?
We either have a SS Gohan with SS aura & SS2 hairstyle, or we have a SS2 Gohan with SS aura & SS2 hairstyle.
Pantalones wrote:Goku can raise and lower his SSj3 (and presumably SSj2) power at will, yeah... but Gohan's been out of practice for 7 years, while Goku's spent those years training harder than ever.

Do you have any proof for all these?

Where was it confirmed?
Goku and Vegeta say nothing when Gohan goes SSJ1 and he does it instantly. When he goes SSJ2 Vegeta starts talking about how weak he has become
Vegeta comments on how pathetic Gohan is compared to how he was as a kid during the fight with Dabra as well.
it also takes Gohan longer to transform
It doesn't. Gohan hadn't decided if he will transform or not, but when he finally decides to do it, he transforms instantly.
Gohan's aura matches ever SSJ1 we have seen in the series. Gohan when he goes SSJ2 for Kibito has the same aura every SSJ2 used in the series.
I know. I believe Gohan's aura looks weaker sometimes because of his lack of training.

Gohan doesn't need to be angry to transform into a Super Saiyan 2.

We either have a SS Gohan with SS aura & SS2 hairstyle, or we have a SS2 Gohan with SS aura & SS2 hairstyle.
Or, much more simply, we have SS Gohan with an SS aura all the time and slightly different hair a month before the tournament than after, and SS2 Gohan with an SS2 aura.

You just found an excuse for SS Gohan to have a different hairstyle from the one he had before, just like I did with the different aura.

You see, none of us know the holy truth about what Gohan actually was. Both sides have their own share of evidence for both opinions.

Evidence that he is a Super Saiyan:
  • Gohan has his Super Saiyan aura.
  • Daizenshuu 2 implies he was a Super Saiyan.
Explanation about why he is a Super Saiyan:
Gohan needs to be angry in order to turn SS2, because of his lack of training. Gohan got angry & turned into a Super Saiyan when Videl was getting her ass kicked, so because his anger was still fresh against Kibito, he could turn SS2. Against Dabra, he didn't need SS2 to beat him, because Dabra was around as strong as Cell was, but in his Perfect form, not his Super Perfect form. He was trying to get angry & turn into a SS2 when Boo was about to be revived, but he couldn't do it. His hairstyle was different from before because one month has passed, and D7 made a mistake. The only point he is a SS2 is against Kibito.

Evidence that he is a Super Saiyan 2:
  • Gohan has his Super Saiyan 2 hairstyle.
  • Daizenshuu 7 states he was a Super Saiyan 2.
Explanation about why he is a Super Saiyan 2:
Gohan can freely turn into a Super Saiyan 2. He transformed when he got angry because Videl was getting her ass kicked, against Kibito, against Dabra because he was as strong as Cell in his best form (Super Perfect), when trying to prevent Boo's revival because he wanted to use his maximum power, and even more than that through his anger, and when he pulled off the Z-Sword & did training with it. SS2 normally has a big aura with sparks, but Gohan's aura in this form is inconsistent because of he hadn't done any real training for 7 years, minus the last month. He only transformed into a Super Saiyan when he appeared in the city as the Golden Warrior, and during his training with Goten, while he was a Super Saiyan 2 from the point he got angry with Spopovitch up until his training with the Z-Sword, and D2 made a mistake.

See? It easily goes both ways. You can't prove me wrong, and I can't prove you wrong. You just pick a side.

You have the right to believe whatever you want, I guess.

I'll never comprehend why anyone would let a minor difference in hair that only exists on two ends of a time-skip trump something as blatant and consistent as the aura differences and an actual demonstration of both forms.

Toriyama made it SO DAMN EASY to tell the difference with even just a cursory glance, yet some people choose to ignore it and make up the most roundabout, unnecessary, and overcomplicated B.S. instead. It's just... baffling.

Because Gohan losing his SS2 after the tournament makes no sense to me. Because the excuse that he has to get angry to use it doesn't make sense to me. Because Gohan trying to give more than his best when he isn't even at his best, and doesn't even bother to be at his best when trying to go beyond his best sounds like a huge contradiction to me. Do all these make sense to you? That's awesome, but that's not the case for me.

So I'm stupid and I say bullshit because I'm wrong and you are totally right because you know everything...? What the hell with that attitude dude? Aren't you supposed to be a mod?

I guess I'm also stupid because I see Ultimate Gohan having a slightly different hairstyle than his base, and fully outlined eyes, right? Or Toriyama forgot that he was drawing a super-simple manga for little kids?

I didn't say that, you did.

Like I already said, it totally would make more sense for Gohan to be SS2 at certain points. But not nearly enough to justify ignoring what the art plainly, simply, and undeniably shows.

Really, I would expect any child who's good at "spot the differences" games to quickly realize "oh, Super Saiyan 2 has the lightning bolts," and be satisfied. It's THAT easy.

But you're right, this is getting too "intense," so we should probably just drop it.

Gohan not being a SSJ2 makes NO SENSE from a story perspective. D7 confirms he was a SSJ2, that's enough for me.

The characters were all taking stupid pills all throughout the Buu Arc. I think Mr. Satan spiked all the food at the Budokai.
