The rage boost is not the only things who makes Gohan strong.

He didn't even have a year worth of training on namek. And without his rage mode, he was still stronger than Vegeta on earth. Gohan at 5 was stronger than all the adults except Goku, piccolo and Vegeta without rage boost.
And at 10, even without his rage ssj2, he was still stronger than goku with his normal ssj1 and became the number one.

Vegeta be on some midlife crisis shit.
But Saiyan's retain their youth for longer in there life, so Vegeta is technically have a pre-midlife crisis.

He's only a disappointment if you equate "disappointing" with "doesn't want to spend his life punching things".
Motherfucking this.

Gohan got everything he wanted in live: A loving family, a very well earning job and he still ranks within the top 5 when it comes to strongest characters in the manga. And as The Tori-bot pointed out, at the end of manga Gohan practically lives in a fucking mansion. The dude is loaded. So being a scholar obviously payed off. I personally fucking despise the concept that somebody in Dragon Ball must be labelled "disappointing" for prioritizing finding a living and providing for themselves or loved one over fighting and beating people up. Not everybody in Dragon Ball has to be like Goku and Vegeta. So what if Gohan jobs out? Fucking everybody in jobs out in Dragon Ball. Hell, Goku has jobbed out more than anyone in the manga. And since BOG, Goku has technically lost more than Gohan has. But no-one ever brings that up.

Let me put it this way. Imagine you hear more about Beerus and stuff he does. Perhaps he meets with the gods of the multi-verse and has bouts, perhaps he watches anime and is fan of those, or perhaps he has a whole other hobby of his. Now imagine being told all about it, but you never really get to witness it yourself. Maybe you heard Beerus has a family or former love, but you never really get to see him play off or develop from that angle. That's what pretty much people complain about.

Gohan is a scholar, well congrats as we can't enjoy his success at that. It's pretty much just happened off screen and we don't even know what job or career he's in. We have no idea what he majors in or anything of the sort. Gohan is a happy family man, congrats we won't really get much out of that, and it's unlikely his family would affect his character in the least. Would his family make him overprotective, would he be want to raise his child like his mom raised him? We'll never know because no one cares to develop any of that. So really having a family is just a factoid in the end and doesn't really add to his character.

As Rocketman pointed out, even when Goku loses he retains his dignity. He's praised or rises up again. Hell even Vegeta when beaten down still got praise from Beerus. Everyone else was just treated as garbage. Vegeta is called a skilled warrior, and both Goku and Vegeta suddenly have limitless potential. Everyone else....nah...nothing. Can't have Gotenks be called creative or have him show off a bizarre skill to impress Beerus. Can't have Gohan maybe described as having more power than that Goku guy, but having rusty skills. Nope. Instead it's just everyone be trash.

It would seem that Toriyama constantly designing Gohan's looks like Yamcha also rubbed off on the story-telling and so Gohan couldn't be the main character from Buu Arc onwards, as was originally envisaged.

I really don't get what him having a wife/job/etc has do with him clearly getting screwed over, getting nerfed/stripped of his abilites and being made so useless and incompetent (same with other characters not named Goku and Vegeta)...

Jobbing characters is awful in general, especially one who was such an important character in the manga.

I get why Goku has to be the best, but I don't get why they make every other character look so bad. You can make Goku look good without making other characters look bad.. :? Like how it was done in the manga, for the most part..

Your opinion, not a fact. If you don't have anything worthwhile to discuss, then by all means be on your way. I mean when I hate something entirely like pretty much everything to do with Sonic now a days, I just leave since I have nothing good to add. It's fair to be more negative than positive, but posts like these do not contribute much. You made your points in the previous pages, and if you have nothing to add beyond "He sucks" then there's no point in you conversing on this topic.

If they're gonna make him a scholar, than have him do some scholaring.
This so much. They're not using his career at all, so that doesn't work as an excuse. I see a lot of people defend where he ended up by saying he's a scholar/family man and not a fighter... that's not even remotely true. He is still a fighter. And by that I don't mean that he is a relevant fighter or anything, but that they're still using him as a fighter. In Battle of Gods, the most major thing he did was try to fight Beerus and get defeated. In Resurrection F, all that we've seen of him involves him showing up to fight Freeza's army.

The problem is that they're making him a shitty fighter. That's the role they've decided for him - they'll keep using him as a fighter, ignore his career as a scholar, and have him job for Goku and Vegeta to look better. Every time his lack of training is brought up, it's not about how he's studying or being a good parent. It's about how he is slacking off and losing power, which is used to make him fight worse.

If he weren't a fighter any more, his lack of training would be presented as him taking his priorities into account. Goku and Vegeta could be taking responsibility so that Gohan can have the freedom to pursue his career and aspirations. Lots of fans seem to present it this way, but that's clearly not how the series intends to portray him. He receives no credit or justification for his lack of training. Goku and Vegeta are made to handle things because Gohan is simply incapable. Nobody even cares about his career at all, and the series has yet to develop it in any meaningful way or tell us a damn thing beyond that he's a scholar.

So if Gohan's character arc had ended in him actually stepping down as a fighter rather than having his legs kicked out from under him, that'd be an improvement. If his new role could explore his career and why it took priority over him being a fighter, great. But as long as he's going to continue being used as nothing but a fighter, don't be surprised that people are unhappy with him being treated so terribly as one.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Exactly what pisses me off when people use that excuse. Him being a scholar and family man is a factoid. It's not a development as they do nothing with it. I have no damned idea what school subject he likes, what he majors in, or what the hell he does. We have no idea because they don't care to give us a clue. Even if we did get a clue, we'd probably not get anything more than a mention. He pretty much is always utilized as a fighter, and a poor one at that. It makes sense why, but really this hasn't developed him in the least. If anything it's just degrading him more and more as instead of showing or developing his other priorities, we're told he doesn't train and that's it. We get jack shit about his family life or work life. We know nothing.

They just treat his lack of training as being a lazy person. Nothing really showing where he's furthered himself or what he may have done instead, but just not doing anything. His family alone could be a new focal point for his character, especially in a fighting shonen series, but it's unlikely. I really hope this precognition of beating bad guys makes someone an important character goes away. He doesn't need to beat the main bad guys to be important. Maybe some people want that, but personally just throwing an occasional bone is good enough.

All I know is, that elder unlock meant shit in the long run. Toriyama should have killed Gohan off against Buu if all he was to do was buy time with his brand new Mystic Power Up later on.

The funny thing is up until the Buu arc Gohan was one of the few characters who hadn't died yet which was another clue that points to him being special to Toriyama at one point. I vividly remember being shocked when Gohan was killed by Kid Buu since up until then he had managed to survive everything.

AT didn't want to kill a kid.
AT least not In a bloody way.
Gohan and the two kids were unconscious when It happened.
They were lucky.
I wasn't shocked by their death,

You imagine if Gohan had his head crushed by Freeza?
It would have been 100x worse than the cell jr massacre.
