What if the entire anime had Final Bout's dub?

Post by Terra Prime » Sat Mar 28, 2015 3:34 am

You read it right. From start to finish. From Vegeta to Buu. How different would DBZ be regarded today if the only english dub that existed was Final Bout's?

Steve Blum as Goku? I can dig it. Most of the ENG voices in Final Bout are actually quite good and fit the characters well (better than the pre-Kai Funi voices do), the only problem is they're obviously just in the booth for 10 minutes to pick up a quick cheque. It's a crappy imported PS1 fighting game with minimal dialogue, of course they're not going to bring their A-game. If they actually had good direction and were doing a full-on dub of the series, I think it would have turned out fine. Most of that cast are pretty distinguished VAs after all. Heck, the guy who played Freeza is an award-winning Shakespearean stage actor!

Well damn, I guess that answers this thread.

Gohan deserves it.

I actually really like all the voices from final bout, especially when compared to the orginal non kai dub (not that I don't like them too)
Don't forget these guys were pro voice actors, whereas most of the funi guys were just starting out. I'm sure we could expect to be equal if not better than the kai dub.

Would have turned out pretty good. Many of the voice actors were well-chosen, but just needed better direction. Lex Lang was pretty good as Adult Gohan from the little he got.

If they did dub the series then i reckon it would of turned out like the Ocean/Westwood dub, in that it would have more of a generic action/saturday morning cartoon feel to it.

I made this thread a while back if Funimation use the Final Bout voice actors in 1999 with the same scripts then hiring new voice actors. I think things would be no different now but I don't think I would have like it. The Final Bout voices are very hit or miss to me.

It think that the Final Bout cast would have good if they more time. But I don't think I would fallen in love with the dub as much as I did with the Kai dub.

Aside from Freeza, most of the voices in the Final Bout dub sounded passable at the very least. If they had the chance to voice these characters in a legitimate dub, I think they probably would have done an adequate job, but I'm not sure if they would be considered great.

Not fan of US dub, but I think that what they do for the US audience now is a great job.
I played the US rip as a kid on PS emulator and I remember that they sounded like some 80's animated action series, completely out of place.
And as someone noted, it reminded me of Ocean dub.

Wasn't Funimation's economic situation pretty iffy before Toonami? Funimation was never all that huge and rich til DBZ went on Toonami. Not sure they would have been able to afford them at the time.

With Saban's backing they would definitely be able to afford them (keep in mind Saban's founder has an estimated net worth of around 3 billion dollars). And even before Saban started financing them FUNi were still able to afford the Ocean cast for their 1995 Dragon Ball dub.

It would've been interesting to say the least. Brianne Siddall would've made a pretty killer Kid Goku/Kid Gohan.

Oh yeah! Plus if they stuck with Pioneer they would have had all the necessary help. :)

I read that Brian Real talked them into making their own dub and doing it all on their own instead of working with Pioneer. I haven't verified that completely but I'm inclined to believe it. It is notable that Pioneer was involved in the first 3 movies and they all had incredibly accurate scripts and the original music- years before DBZ Kai.
