And while it might not sound like a conventional young boy voice, I still fail to see how it can be applied to the average woman or young girl. I just can't see it for the life of me and it always loops back to sounding like a boy yet to experience puberty (and yet somehow gains power beyond imagination).
Except, it doesn't sound like a boy either. It has this very female-like overtone in the voice, and it really comes out when Gohan speaks with some authority.

Am I the only one who dislikes the idea of what a "proper boy's voice" sounds like? I mean, I don't know about you but I've hear young boys speak with voices that usually sound shrill, girlish and unmanly as you can get. Gender binaries are BS anyways.

With Colleen Clinkenbeard, I just like her Son Gohan performance. It's well acted, sounds sweet and suits his age more than Stephanie Nadolny (a fine kid Goku but not a good Gohan for me). Whether he has a hint of Erza or Riza in his later years or not, I still like it enough to give it a pass (adds to the character IMO)

But hey, I'm probably just a tasteless idiot who wouldn't know quality acting if it slapped my silly so my opinion doesn't amount to jack in the end. I'll just go along and eat up my slop.

Edit: I'm sorry. That last part came out really wrong.

It comes down to acting and believability. Thing is, Colleen might have the acting down, but her believability as Goku or Gohan is just not there. It hurts her integrity to play those characters.

Henderson has both down. Not all genuine boy voices sound good because of bad acting, but Henderson actually has great acting. She's played more boy voices than the other two actors that she's more qualified to play Gohan.

Hell, listen to her crying as Gohan in the Dead Zone movie just before he knocks Garlic jr into the Dead Zone. It sounds real! Then Gohan's subsequent temper fit to actually knock Garlic into the void, again, had that realistic child screaming. It's just so much better than Colleen could ever do.

Yeah Saffron Henderson was pretty much the only English Gohan to sound age appropriate and succesfully sound like a boy IMO. I think most anime fans get confused about authentic sounding child voices from watching too many modern anime dubs that use any woman they can find. If you go look at big budget animation their little boy characters never sound like women playing boys, they just sound like boys. A perfect example would be Bart Simpson or the original Ash Ketchum, tons of people over the years were shocked to find out they're voice actors are women and that's largely because there's very little trace of femininity in the voice.

Stephanie Nadolny was particularly bad at sounding age appropriate and pretty much sounded the same whether Gohan was 4 or 8, she just had an overly raspy voice with very little innocence to it.

This.

People are jaded after they watch too many anime dubs and then hear Clinkenbeard or Nadolny. They think it's okay because other anime dubs do it too. I think some older dubs like Pokémon or DBZ had better boy voices because that was the standard back then in voice acting. I can't help but think in anime dubs that after Ocean was dropped, the season 3 standard of children's voices became what it is today, where kids under 10 sound too old and too much like women or teen girls.

Watch a big budget Hollywood films where there are children and they sound like kids, not like Clinkenbeard and her older sounding voice.

I can vouch for all the Pokemon English dub voices sounding much better in the first few seasons than they do now, including Ash who used to sound like a real boy back then. Nowadays, he sounds like a woman with a bad smoking habit in the dub, no joke. Nadolny has her better roles, like Kid Goku, but her Kid Gohan was pretty bad.

I guess I just enjoy the performance for what it is, 100% authenticity be darned. I was less of a stickler for how lifelike the voice sounded and more if the actor could make do with the character they played. Last thing I watch Anime for is for it to adhere to the rules of reality. For me, I like Colleen Clinkenbeard's Son Gohan in how well acted and how she captures his character, even if the age isn't right on the money 100% :/ *shrugs*

Say… I know I likely mentioned this before but we are all aware of how Goku and Gohan as an adult has a very shrill (but not bad at all) voice in the Japanese version (like puberty missed him by a mile) yet we're debating this about Gohan. Right?

I like her Gohan myself as well, so it's not just you, and it's at least a better kid voice than plenty of others I've heard.

I've heard males with pretty darn high pitch voices, especially when the people are native East Asian speaking in their native languages. So, Goku, when speaking in Japanese like that seems reasonable. So, the voice has believability to it for myself.

Fair point, fair point. It's just that as an adult, some find it too shrill and too easier recognizable as a female VA (similar to your views on Colleen's Gohan). Can be hard to believe that it's applied to the man who could easily destroy the world with his raw power.

I like Nozawa's Goku enough to give it a pass but I don't blame others who are taken aback by it.

Strongly disliked the voices in Kai. The only good thing was that it had more cussing, which stayed loyal to the original manga.

Dunno if this is relevant but Chris Ayers is confirmed for "Resurrection of F."

Chris Sabat may have blatantly confirmed this, but if not, it's been HEAVILY implied by everyone and everything surrounding the English release of this movie.

EDIT: Never mind, I guess Sabat officially confirmed it today.

I'm the same, i'm actually finding it hard to watch Kai because of these voices, especially the re-casts, i feel they really got it wrong there. Maybe it's because i have always been an Ocean Dub fan, but i'm finding the voice acting from Funimation to be horrible in Kai. They sound like they are trying to force it too much, it doesn't sound natural enough to me.

It's weird because i love everything else by Funimation, but when it comes to Dragon Ball Z / Dragon Ball Z movies / Dragon Ball Kai / Dragon Ball GT, i'm really not a fan. I like the voice acting for Dragon Ball though.

I just don't understand how anyone could think that the acting is worse in Kai. The actors have experience and the gift of a good and accurate scripts. The deliveries sound like characters not caricatures.

Especially if you contrast May's voice to Ash's voice in the same season. Differences were big enough to not assume they were the same person until you were informed. Thats what good acting is, and it seems much better handled in a lot of cartoons where actors are chosen for specific voice sounds. Where as Anime dubs, actors are just chosen through popularity or nepitism rather than actual vocal range. Today, I can't tell if its laziness or just bad casting that created its own trend standard for recent dubs in general. Where 15 year olds getting voices that are too deep and monotoned for their characters, or little boys with overly feminine voices that are just plainly obvious older women.

Yeah, I could feel they were trying way too hard with some of the deliveries in Kai but the worst in it for me escalated in BoG where the entire movie felt overacted from the Main heroes. Where Goku sounds really restless when just saying simple lines, or him trying to sound childish by talking loudly rather than softening it as The Japanese voice actor does. I also mentioned that I don't like Piccolo's new delivery style either. I thought Chris was starting to sound good in Raging blast 1 where his voice was deep, had emotional range, and lost the Satan throatiness it was notorious for. Now, he just has no emotion at all and just sounds cynical and grumpy rather than calm and introverted. Then there's Vegeta who sounded good in Kai, but in BoG Chris just goes from literally yelling every read word for no reason (Bingo Scene) to a point where it sounds more stupid than funny; and then got really whiny in his yells, especially when fighting Beerus.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

You're speaking in hyperbole, it wasn't every scene.

I don't get that AT ALL. Is this coming from nostalgia? His delivery has more range than his gravel in the throat deliver he used to have, and it's more natural. Not to come off as rude, but it seems like you love the old dub because of nostalgia, and used a thesaurus to come up with a bunch of words to justify it because I have no idea where you got the idea of "cynical" from Sabat's current delivery.

I must agree with ABED.

The acting has only improved with Kai, as have the representation of each character respective to the original language and manga. I've been following both the actors and the series since the dub statted and Battle of Gods is a fantastic example of their improvement, as is Kai.

There's also how when it comes to the story, different moment call for different deliveries and the like. You can't expect them to be all static and the same.

Actually, it's usually it's whether or not they can portray the character well or not as well as if they can actual act. Honestly, dubs have gotten so much better compared to back then. Voice actors aren't voice imitators nor are they required to always be able to alter their voice.

I'm On Part 2 Of Kai and I love all the voices because most of the main characters sound like Funi's dub. Just my preference but if they made another DBZ set that had the dragon box video quality, kai's script, and the Yamamoto score that'd be a perfect release for me.
