Toriyama's Influences?

Post by SDNess » Wed Jan 21, 2004 12:29 am

As a writer I like to analyze different series that interest me and see where the idea for the series originated. So, what do you think were Toriyama's influences in creating the world of DragonBall?

Journey to the West and Kinnikuman (where do you think the whole PL thing came from?) among others

Yep, Dayspring summed it up. I think it's fairly obvious that Disney cartoons also influenced his art style and characters to some extent. The 'Bibidi, babidi, Boo' is evidence enough.

Yes Disney did influence him. I read him in one interview saying he really liked Disney's 101 Dalmations when he was a kid. He liked the drawing style in the movie. Don't forget also that he's really wild about Jackie Chan. Just look at his whole homage to him with the "Jackie Chun" persona. I also remember that he decided to do a story related to China because his wife was interested in China at the time.

I read something interesting. When Toriyama was drawing DB/Z, Jackie Chans movies played a big role in Goku's fighting style. Then on a recent Q&A, Jackie said he was deathly afraid of needles...coincidence?

PL is essentially the concept of Chi/Ki, which is evident in martial arts. I've never watched Kinnikuman. It has PL too? I thought it was just wrestling, lol.

By PL I meant chi/ki's numerically represented. Warsman had a chi of 1,000,000 and his opponent, Buffaloman had a strength of 10,000,000. The fan-translated version I read of it (Toriyama's World, maybe?) used the term PL so it stuck with me. Either way, PL in both cases mean the same thing, and Kinnikuman came out way before DB.

Oh. I don't think way before - like early 80's?
