4KIDS was like the "Fox News" of cartoons. Though I have to say, the only thing GOOD about the 4Kds dub was that "Gotta catch em all" song. That song was so catchy and memorable!

EDIT: And also the One Piece rap, the original Yu-Gi-Oh and GX theme songs were cool too. That's the only thing good about 4kids were some of the theme songs that they did.

God, 4Kids are the worst.

TPCi, Odex, and Nelvana would like a word with you.

The current TPCi Pokemon dub has atrocious voice acting from the entire main cast of characters, script writing that has main characters abuse slang and alliteration constantly, 30 second intros with phoned in efforts constantly, in addition to replacing more of the JPN OST than 4Kids ever did handling Pokemon, period, in the recent XY season. Editing has also returned ala 4Kids as well, so yes, 4Kids isn't the worst at all. Even the Pokemon's voices have gotten shittier since TPCi took over from 4Kids, no less: Goomy in a recent XY episode sounds like it has Down's Syndrome.

Not to mention the Odex dubs of One Piece and Yu-Gi-Oh have horrendous voice acting that make their corresponding 4Kids dubs seem pretty decent in comparison (yes, even their horrible One Piece dub somehow has less cringe-worthy acting than Odex).

Nelvana's dub of Beyblade: Metal Fusion and their dub of Shogun Steel also have pretty bad voice acting as well.

4Kids have put out a bit of somewhat decent work before, such as a decent chunk of Pokémon and TMNT 2003, but I doubt Dragon Ball would be so lucky under 4Kids. Worst case scenario, we'd have another One Piece, although I'd probably expect something more Yu-Gi-Oh! tier, something similar to the original Ocean dub, but with New York actors instead.

Although they didn't do this with every show they got, 4Kids had a tendency to buy the international distribution rights outside of Asia for the shows they got...meaning, in essence, that the vast majority of the international dubs would then be based on the 4Kids dub, inheriting their edited video footage, altered audio, and poorly-adapted scripts. So not only would it have been bad for the English-speaking world, but all non-Asian countries could have potentially been screwed over with their dubs as well.

Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Shaman King aired here from 4Kids. Yu-Gi-Oh! had kind off cool opening, but otherwise the edited anime was s**t.
US editing and localization is something that I am not envious about.

I get the impression that 4Kids didn't have much faith in One Piece from the get-go, because they never bought the international distribution rights for that show apart from one country. Most unfortunately, the Latino Spanish dub is based on the 4Kids dub of One Piece.

It had less to do with this, more the issue Toei Europe controlled the market for Europe. If 4Kids had been more aggressive, they would've gotten the rights, via Toei Animation in Japan, but as far as I am aware, the distribution deal was with the American branch, which only covers North America & Latin American markets, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand (which is what the simulcast also covers on Crunchyroll). As far as I am aware, the only market that 4Kids didn't cover that got the dub was the UK, which I'm not entirely sure how that was licensed for distribution prior to Manga UK picking it up.

It also didn't help that there were already a number of deals across the globe that were already in place by the time the 4Kids dub had come into play. Because of this, 4Kids was already limited to where they could distribute, even if the European branch of Toei Animation wasn't a factor.

I know, but just saying somehow TPCi makes their Pokemon dub look like modern-day FUNimation did it, Odex makes their YGO dub look like that as well, etc. It can get much worse than 4Kids, no joke.
