Would you like other studio to do another DB animation?

Post by coola » Sat Apr 04, 2015 4:02 pm

Hello everyone
Haruhi spin-off "Nagato Yuki-chan" and Nanoha sequel "Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid" had their premiere this week, old VA returned to reprise their roles, but, they both are done by different animation studios, would you watched new series/movie of DB done by different animation studio? If yes, would you like them to emulate Toriyama old drawing style, or try something new?

Given that it's seemingly the only way we'd ever get a "true" remake that isn't 95% existing footage...yeah, I'd be interested in seeing it happen (not that Toei would ever willingly give up the license).

I could go either way on the style, but would prefer if they tried to follow the manga art as closely as possible.

I'd love to see Dragon Ball done by Madhouse, the studio behind shows such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Death Note, Parasyte and perhaps most notably in making a case for them doing Dragon Ball, the 2011 anime adaptation of Hunter x Hunter. Everything I've seen from them is brilliant and I could see them making a really good Dragon Ball anime if they had the chance.

Which ever studio in Sunrise did the amazing fights in Accel World! I still come back to some of those fights just for how intense they get!

Have a sample :D It's small though.

Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

Studio 8

Established around 1995, it is notable for works including My-HiME, Buddy Complex, Idolmaster: Xenoglossia, The Girl Who Leapt Through Space, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, Accel World and Love Live!
I'll agree with getting Sunrise to animate. BONES would be good as well.

Madhouse, no doubt, their Hunter x Hunter animation is outright beautiful

I still have to see that anime.

Sunrise; basically the guys who worked on Bebop, Code Geass, Tiger and Bunny. Madhouse is another good choice. I think they did Paprika, Barefoot Gen, Redline among many others, all have amazing animation.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Not to mention they actually get great composers for their anime. Like Yoshihisa Hirano (Death note, Hunter X Hunter)

just imaging having Hirano composing for db gives me chills

Obviously. Toei does a very sub-standard job regarding DB. Madhouse doing DB would be a dream.

BONES would be a really good choice. I loved their work in FMAB.

Maybe Studio Pierrot and the best-known DBZ animators would work.

But I think most animation artists have more trouble drawing DBZ style then other Anime shows. An animation artist that's doing a good job animating another Anime show isn't necessarily going to do a good job animating DBZ. Thin looking characters are easier to Animate then buffed DBZ characters. Maybe that's the reason DBZ lost many details.

I'm not sure, but I remember that some of Toei animators had trouble with DBZ because it is drawn different than traditional anime shows back then, that's why DBZ had bad episodes.

Probably not the best video to use since the idiot who uploaded it decided to let YouTube 'stabilise' the video.

Here's it unstabilised - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRN8i7E8kOE ...with funky Jazz music.

Just like I don't change Sunrise for Gintama, Madhouse for HunterxHunter, I would never change Toei for Dragon Ball.
They did the perfect job in the past. Nowadays, when it comes to movies/specials, they are still the best when they want.

Take: Battle of Gods, Fukkatsu no F, One Piece Strong World, One Piece Film Z, One Piece 3d2y special as examples.

HunterxHunter 2011 anime is a masterpiece overall (They screwed up the Hunter exam arc though)
The soundtrack is awesome too. Whoever did it, shoud join DB staff.

But when it comes to movies, first one was okay and the second was bad, animation wise. Both were flop.

Ironically, no matter how much effort they put in their adaptations, Madhouse doesn't sell well in Japan: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=781179&show=20
They almost went bankrupt too in the past - http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=284403
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

I think Toei Animation is superb for Dragon Ball. They have done it really well for One Piece and its movies. I believe it highly depends on the budget and the content on how well they will animate it.

BONES isnt THAT great actually. Their work in FMAB was average at best.

SunRise & MadHouse are pros. Good music & solid animations

TOEI back in DBZ's prime was a beast. Like just compare DBZ M8-13's animation quality to any of its contemporaries like yyh, rurourin kenshin etc. TOEI really pumped budget those days...

The animators you are thinking of were not Toei animators, but sub-contracting studios. Last House was pumping out an episode once a month with only two key animators for the last few years, one of them being a horrible animator. The issue wasn't "this is hard to animate" it was "I'm a bad animator scribbling out 150 cuts a month so as to meet a deadline."

Anyway, studios don't really matter. Toei Animation could easily produce a higher-quality product. Just about any studio could. The issue is whether time is being spent on the product and talented staff are being assigned. Toei Animation could do that. Madhouse doesn't necessarily mean great, either. Hunter x Hunter had an average production schedule with a tone of staff assigned per episode, but otherwise few instances of talented animators or directors. Frankly, I thought the Madhouse Hunter x Hunter was an overall weak series. Disk Wars: Avengers and World Trigger from Toei Animation has better directing and storyboarding. Hunter x Hunter had on-model drawings and very occasionally nice animation, but was otherwise unspectacular for most episodes thanks to weaker directing.

Anyway, I suppose if I had my dream assembly of staff it would be Ryoo-chimo as series director, character designer, and chief animation supervisor. His work leading Yozakura Quartet at Tatsunoko Digital is nothing short of genius. He's a great director, character designer, and he has connections with talented action animators.

If we're talking Studio Pierrot's regular pool, I would definitely want Sessha Gorou as series director with Kouda Masayuki as character designer. Sessha has contacts with super talented key animators and he specializes in comedy and action animation. Check out his Naruto Shippuuden Episode #194 and Naruto SD Episode #51.
