This movie is awesome!!!! For me, it's only ebcause the Cooler itself. As a kid, I watched the movies chronologically and in the first four I was like, OK, it's feature movies, but then BAM!!! I still remembered Freeza in fresh memory as probably the coolest and most tense fight in whole DB also as a great villain - and there goes his brother, stronger than Freeza itself. I don't know what's more intimidating, the cool ruthless look of Freeza's and Cooler's fourth look or Ryusei Nakao's performance. I loved Gohan climbing Karin Tower, Piccolo's action and Goku breaking Sauza's scouter and having casually fist landed on his face.
Also, the animation is awesome, I love the kaioken and fight sequences or Cooler's transformation in the waterfall! There are also two of my favorite musical pieces, that with the dast drumming and then the one playing during Cooler's defeat.
Only thing I don't like about this movie is Gohan's tail.
I love to consider this movie going on during the training for Androids in my own canon!

Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

This movie is one of my favourites, maybe because it's like the fight with Freeza cept not in 20 episodes. The henchmen while being Ginyu Force clones don't give that feeling one bit and I love them for that (specially Sauzer, really loved when he appeared at the end of it only to be killed by Piccolo), speaking of Piccolo, damn, he beat all of the henchmen in a total badass way, the way he used Neiz's attack against himself was awesome. Also Cooler is an awesome villian, I really prefer him over Freeza in terms of personality, It really gives that Big Brother Is A Bully type and so far all of the voices I hear he has fit them really well. And his transformation theme gives me chills.

It's all right, but to me it's just a clip show of the Freeza arc.

Coola is still the only movie villain that I wish was in the manga.

It should have been Cooler and Cold coming to Earth to get revenge...
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I like Cooler, I liked the idea of someone actually realizing Senzu Beans are important and zapping them, and I like how this movie gave us the single most cooly (ha ha) terrifying shot of Goku as a Super Sayain. Aside from that it's one giant chase scene, which makes Coolor look smart for not assuming Goku's dead, but does not make for a movie called "The Incredible Strongest versus Strongest". Aside from Cooler's death- that was overkill spectacle was worthy of a terror of the universe. Have to say I liked Andy Chandler too; compare him to Ayres and Cooler's more brutal and to-the-point nature is very clear.

*They made Cooler look like a bitch. If the whole point of this movie is to have Freeza's stronger brother fight the Super Saiyan, wouldn't the basic, simple approach be that he must beat the Super Saiyan or at least match him in fair combat, one-upping his brother?
That's really the best way to put it; no point in making Coolor both smarter and stronger if he's going to die the same way Freeza did. It was meant to be ironic, and it was, shows how incorrigibly conceited the Colds are, but they way Goku ending up beating him it was like there was no difference at all.

My second favorite DBZ movie overall - first favorite being DBZ Movie 6 (Return of Cooler). Though it may be a con to some, I liked that the movie was basically a copy/paste abridged version of the Freeza saga. I found Cooler's Squad to be better designed and have cooler abilities than the Ginyu Force. Sauza is just awesome with his 5-finger beam and Sauza Blade, too. Goes the same for Cooler, who had a more intimidating personality and all around better design than Freeza. It also helps he's the only one of the Cold family that sounds like a cold tyrant as far as the English dubs are concerned.

Only gripe with Movie 5 would be how brief the final battle is. I don't think Cooler looked completely outclassed as others think, though. That Supernova he pulled out of nowhere made for a cool finale since SSJ Goku charged up his energy for it in the middle of the air and still got forced back down into the earth's crust before being able to counter with the Kamehameha.

I'd give the movie an 8.5/10 as far as DBZ movies go.

One of my faves, possibly all time faves. Its not as much of a Freeza arc clone as you think, really.
-Cooler just really oozes as a serious badass motherfucker that doesn't mess around; someone to take a lot more seriously than his brother. While i don't hate the Funi voice for Freeza, (better than that Ocean Dub one dear god) I really love Chandler here, he is really imposing and fits the character well.
-The CAS were pretty cool, they were like a more serious, deadly Reecome, Burter and Jeice. As much as I love the Ginyus (and trust me I do! haha) It was cool to see these guys as somewhat goofy with their poses too, but also played more serious as threats. Salza going toe-to-toe with Post-Nail Piccolo, and Neiz having to be outsmarted showed they were legit threats. Its too bad Dore wasn't memorable at all, but everyone's gotta have a fodder on their team. x)
-ditto about Piccolo being a badass and killing everyone.
-Oolong humor is da best humor. i was saddened when he dropped out of the later movies.
-the importance of the senzus was neat, and i loved how Salza just vaporized the bag of them. smart motherfucker.
-The chase and hiding parts were pretty neat, definitely different than usual DB styled scenarios.
-I liked the intro with Bardock/Freeza, neat way to tie the two movies together.
-and of course it was great to have Cooler realize he was hoisted by his own petard in his last (not) moments.
-I usually don't like when dubs remove the original music, but FUCK was M#5's Soundtrack amazing haha damn.

the only real downside is the final fight. I feel like Coolers 4th form should have went up against SSJ Goku, I mean base Goku didn't beat 4th form Freeza xD
and it was abit too onesided against final form. And honestly, who gave an ounce of shit about that stupid bird? that was hilariously bad.

overall tho it was an awesome movie, and it puts Cooler heads and tails above the rest of most movie villains and stands on his own as a character.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I have a question about this movie. When Goku fires his kamehameha at FF Cooler, was he using a standard Kaioken or was it a Kaioken x20?

One of the worst movies.
Mainly because Goku spends half the movie waiting for Gohan to came back with senzu beans, while not interesting happens in that time. So there goes half the movie.
Coola soldiers are boring too. Even Slug has cooler soldiers.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Even though it is par the course that Goku doesn't get to act until the end, having been taken out by the big bad and barely clinging to life, and having Gohan and Krillin protect him was smart writing. Bringing Oolong was cool, and having them out camping was great too. Sadly, the series proper isn't known for amazing character development and giving you the feels, at least the movies remind you these guys are friends, and not just martial artists who save the world while pig-men cower. And I liked the ending, where once again Goku is so beaten down, he was at the mercy of Salza. It really shows that Saiyans no matter what aren't invincible. And dat Piccolo sniper action

But the movie overall is lackluster. Cooler looks exactly like Freeza. The Armored Squadron act just like the Ginyu Force, And the fights are lacking and the powers of the main cast are off. How off? Well Gohan is supposed to be stronger than the Armored Squadron, and once again is lacking his rage boosts, just like in Movie 4. And Gohan becomes a damsel in distress again for Piccolo to save, again. I wished that Krillin's role and Gohan's role was switched-I can see Krillin being almost killed by the Armored Squadron and saved by Piccolo, and saving the day by holding onto Yajirobe's last bean. I can see Gohan taking point, protecting his dad, and unleashing a furious assault on Salza-and win. Movie 5 really turned itself on its head with how the beginning and end was written, different from normal, why did they follow the exact same formula in the middle? And the Cooler fight sucked. The 5th form should have been the beat all, where it was even stopping Goku's Super Saiyan, and Goku won by complete tenacity. Instead we got the 5th Form, and Goku became Super Saiyan, and the fight was over practically. The only point of Cooler was to show his new form, you should have the decency to make that 5th form equal in strength to Super Saiyan.

Overall, tldr, Good premise, somewhat good writing, hampered by a broken formula.

They never explained which Kaioken. Assuming Goku had to use a more powerful version against FF Cooler because Cooler is more powerful than Frieza makes me believe he used Kaioken x20.

The admins prefer you make new threads rather than bump year-old ones.

The movie itself doesn't say, but since it tries to stick thematically to the Freeza fight, I've always assumed it was the x20, just like in that fight.

Although I wouldn't classify it as one of the worst, THIS is the reason why it isn't as great as others in my opinion. However, I really do enjoy the Coola soldiers. Sauza is flamboyant and Neize is just weird. Doore is a big brute. Sure it's cliche, but I don't see how the Slug Soldiers are better.

I thought it was the x20 version too because of that. I was just going through the DBZ wikia which says it's the standard Kaioken so I wanted to double-check.

Sauza is the best DBZ henchmen, bar none, imo. Five finger beam and Sauza Blade are pretty awesome techniques for a one time side villain to have. And he outlives his boss in Movie 5 which is cool too. Although I much prefer Sho Hayami's voice for him in the JP dub than Michael Marco's French accent given to him in the English dub.

A good throw away film, as most of them are. Certainly very memorable, visually. I liked the burning forests, the scenes at Korin Tower, and the fact that Goku was the only SS in the film.

Not great, but thankfully never a chore a sit through.

I can't help but feel this film has a few similarities to RoF which I think is pretty cool. I enjoyed this one!
