Was the Goku vs Freeza battle really that dragged out?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Was the Goku vs Freeza battle really that dragged out?

Post by Jermyn » Mon Nov 20, 2006 10:21 pm

Was the Goku vs Freeza battle really that dragged out? I mean it was supposed to be the final battle in Dragonball at the time, so it make sense that Toriyama and the anime writers would try to to make the most epic battle ever. Plus Freeza is the strongest being in the universe, it would have been anitclimactic if Goku had beat him in 4 episodes instend of 20 episodes.

Well, it was definitely long. But the fights aren't ever as long as they take in real time. They fight way too fast for that. So it's slowed down. Otherwise you'd just see the bangs and booms that bystanders see and it would've been over in a few moments.

It's not like it was dragged out in the anime on purpose. It's just that they couldn't go faster than Toriyama.
And it felt dragged out in the anime because 20 pages of action don't make for 20 minutes of animation... and yet, they had to.

I assume you mean the post-DeathBall SSj Goku vs Freeza fight. Well, theories on fight speed and such aside...

Originally? No. In the manga, the fight was very well paced. Although it took an entire volume, it was still believable placable within five minutes, because the action moved very quickly, and there were a good deal of "meanwhiles" with the others back on Earth.

In the anime, however... ugh. It was definitely dragged out. Even though Freeza said at one point that it was "taking longer than he thought" for Namek to explode, it was still much longer. But not by any flaw in the storytelling; it was just dragged out for "fillerizing" purposes.

Oh, well, I say. At least most of the fight was well- animated and done.

No, I mean the entire fight that started at DBZ episode 87 and ending at DBZ episode 105. By the way I like how the fight went in anime, it's just that other people say that it was to long. I'm just asking for your opinions.

...oh.

Well, same reasons, I suppose. It was necessary to drag it out so they wouldn't catch up to the manga. Though I don't remember the pre-SSj episodes being too bad in that regard.

If the stretching out make the battle more dramatic, it'd be ok.

But, since most of the added time is Goku and Freeza gazing into each others' eyes and/or recapping things that happened (supposedly) less than two minutes ago...

There's just no excuse for having a fight last twenty episodes, no excuse whatsoever. Do you realize that that was nearly half a years worth of episodes!? Egads. Moreover this is the only fight that non DBZ fans seem to remember and it leaves them with a bad impression.... I admit I enjoyed most of it, but after the SSJ transformation, I started to get seriously bored.

That used to bother me, but it doesn't anymore. Who cares what non-DBZ fans think about DBZ? Why should the show be catering to opinions of people that don't know what it is?

Well the only reason it gets me is because maybe if they hadn't seen just that particular fight, they might not be non-DBZ fans. Not saying that it should be shortened for their sake, but it's my observation that its had a lot of negative effect.

Yeah, I know, but if they weren't complaining about that they'd be complaining about how they'd be making funny japanese noises and are all half naked homos wrasslin' each other.

If I remember, the pre-Genki Dama fight wasn't that stretched out, I thought it was well paced. And I've only seen 1 episode (and it was 105, coincidentally) of the entire SSJ fight, so I've got no clue about pacing in that regard.

2 and 1/2 volumes :D
Nah, it was well paced, it deserved that length considering what Jermyn said about it supposedly being the final battle of Dragon Ball.

Four years ago, a friend and I edited 39 episodes from "Password Is Porunga" to "Goku's Alive" down to five hours, or only 15 episodes worth of material. I showed it to a few people who'd like DBZ if it wasn't so stretched out and they didn't notice I cut anything.

Wow that really a lot of filler and junk, NOW that what I call stretched out. The battle was classic and even Goku said that was one of his hardest battle.

Since your in the subject of time in battles, I have a question. While watching the pioneer dub searching for horrible quotes for that other thread, I heard Piccolo telling Goku that he needed him to stall Raditz for five minutes. Is this what was said in the original version too? I haven't read book one(seventeen) in over six months so I'm not sure what the ViZ translation says. Any answers?

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.

He doesn't give Goku a specific time, he just asks him to hold Raditz off for as long as he can.
