Very reasonable. Seems to echo the thoughts of most who saw it.

I think "flawed but fun" is an adequate description based on the feedback.

Exactly how I felt after watching the movie... well actually throughout their fight.
First base Goku vs 100% Freeza, the lizard couldnt even hit Goku.
Second Blue Goku vs Gold Freeza, it didnt even look like Freeza had the upper hand, well yeah he did land more hits but Goku was countering him back and then after a short while Goku found out Freeza's weakness then he always had a smirk on his face (weirdly it seemed like Goku was the villain at some point)
Goku and Vegeta lecturing Freeza... I mean seriously now..... its like Goku was even begging that Freeza should leave and master his gold form before challenging him again.
Weirdest part for me was after Gold Freeza punched Goku in the face, from the looks of it Goku waited for Freeza to punch him and then Goku looked like some sort of villain after that part, he looked unsatisfied and then enters a scary BG instrumental song that made it even more convincing.

The ending of the film (with Whis) was predictable ever since chapter 2 came out, imo. Many people here, including myself, called it out as a joke, and unfortunately it happened.

But Goku didn't rely on these forms, he transformed by accident, and without even realizing it. The fact that he didn't notice that he went from God to base to SS and eventually back to God means that all these forms are around the same level. Plus, Beerus comments on Goku's strength in general when he says that his power decreased insignificantly, and doesn't say anything about his power after he turned SS, which further implies that it doesn't make much difference.

He didn't notice that he'd absorbed the power of SSG and nothing more than that was said. It wouldn't make any sense whatosever for him not to notice that he transformed back into Super Saiyan, given his enormous familiarity with the transformation, but even if he didn't notice this it would still presuppose that he instinctively used SSJ to draw out the remaining power of SSG. Furthermore, the actual difference in power between base Goku and SSG Goku is speculative, no matter how "insignificant" it might be. We know for a fact that there is a difference though, otherwise Goku wouldn't have needed to transform back into SSG just to negate Beerus' enormous energy ball, which he couldn't do before.

So no, he definitely relied on these transformations after absorbing his God power initially. There's really no disputing this.

But the FnF manga shows that base Goku is around as strong as God Goku. If SSGSS Goku is stronger than base Goku, then he should also be stronger than SSG Goku.

No it doesn't. Goku surrounds his fist with a "special" kind of energy and attempts to punch Whis with an image of SSG Goku in the background - what that indicates, directly, is that Goku was using God ki in that particular moment. What it doesn't confirm is that base Goku is necessarily as strong as SSG Goku. You're acting like it was some explicit statement, which couldn't be further from the truth.

As for Beerus, we have no idea how much of his power Beerus was using. If he was at full power (which is possible, since he is angry), then his ki blast should be strong enough to kill Goku.

I find that incredibly unlikely. Beerus was half-asleep, and he was also reported to blow up a planet with nothing more than a sneeze in the movie. Goku was shocked by both of these incidents, and the latter is definitely a casual showing.

He still says that Goku doesn't need to turn Super Saiyan God anymore, even though he can transform on his own without the ritual, and that's before Super Saiyan God SS, since Toriyama says that we can understand that after watching BoG. Which even further implies that base/SS Goku in BoG are about as strong as God Goku.

No, that just implies that Goku is capable of tapping into the full power of Super Saiyan God; ergo, he doesn't need it anymore. Every time he's done this, both in BoG and in RoF, he's done it by transforming into the first Super Saiyan state. He barely even fought Beerus in base after he absorbed it and went directly to SSJ not long into the fight.

Goku doesn't say "this is regular Super Saiyan with Super Saiyan God's power"

He literally calls it "Super Saiyan with the power of Super Saiyan God".

I don't know what else you'd expect here. At best I can concede that SSGSS might be stronger than SSG, but there was certainly no implication of that in the film or the manga.

No..not at all! Only because he gets rage boost doesn't mean he's stronger. Unless he would tranform and beat them in the end, just like SSj Goku did to Freeza and SSJ2 Gohan did to Cell. He didn't beat any of them and what happened against Vegeta was pure luck. Not even a win, more like a Doube KO.

Vegeta vs Beerus is most the recent example, that rage boost doesn't necessary make you stronger than your opponent.

Well, I am pretty sure that Gohan had a power level of 1307, and according to Nappa and Vegeta all saibamen were pretty equal to Raditz, and they had power level of about 1200, which means that even if for a single moment, Gohan was actually stronger than Raditz. As far as for his brief encounter with Vegeta, Gohan was in Oozaru form which gives x10 boost in power, and as far as I remember Gohan was stated to have power level of 1000 in base, which means that he was about 10000 in Oozaru form, and while Vegeta had more than him while being fresh (12000, I guess), he most likely lost a lot of a power and ki in his fight with Goku, Krillin and others, which let Gohan surpassing his power level.What about Frieza and Nappa, we don't know for sure, but given that rage gives very large power boosts to Gohan and that you have to be close to opponent's power level to severely wound him, we may assume that even if he wasn't stronger than them, he could very well be equal or a bit weaker to be able to damage them.

Nah golden freeza is bulkier than his white self.

ALso,i think showing whis can time rewind in chapter 2 was a bad idea,since people then easily made 1+1=whis turns back time to save earth.

If they would have kept it,would have been a total surprise,yes i know people would be screaming OMG whis has new hax powers out of his arse,but would still be a surprise.

The kotaku review makes a good point but kind of disregards the entire context of Freeza's return. Fans are already livid that he's now stronger than Gohan, imagine the reaction had he been somehow able to take both Vegeta and Goku as super saiyan god super saiyans? Yeesh. No, I thought the movie handled the whole affair brilliantly. It was ultimately both the hubris of Freeza and Goku that gives the movie its most insightful moments. For the first time in probably the franchise's history, Goku has to look his mistakes right in the face(namely Bulma sobbing) and concede that he was too stubborn for his own good. I agree that as a standalone movie with no series context, RoF suffers from some pretty serious structural problems. However as a continuation of the franchise, it's amazing.

The stroke of Genius with Freeza is that by the end of the movie, he has basically done away with anyone who would have possibly wished him back again in the first place bringing his story to a final close. All because he couldn't just look the other way and enjoy the 75 planets he currently owns. And of course, because he's extremely abusive of his own followers.
