Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Usagi's (and Chibiusa's) original Portuguese voice actor, Fernanda Figueiredo will be returning as a guest star voicing Queen Serenity in the Crystal dub.
I like that, it's an hommage for the actor and her characters and it also means we'll have a new voice for Usagi (and hopefully a better voice).
Figueiredo also played Chi-chi, Chaozu and Videl in Dragon Ball and DBZ (she left the show in GT).

I am absolutely expecting them to cast Bárbara Lourenço (who played, for example, Doremi Harukaze) as Usagi.

Considering she's already from the same studio and Nami from One Piece, I could see it happening. I don't really want it tho, but that's more due to the fact that's she's in everything these days and not due to her actual performance (which I do like a lot).Puto wrote:I am absolutely expecting them to cast Bárbara Lourenço (who played, for example, Doremi Harukaze) as Usagi.

I have the same opinion. She's a nice actress, one of the best from the Naruto dub (and one who does her homework on the speaking/pronunciation - she was one of the few VAs that pronounced the names, like Naruto, more or less correctly) but she suffers from what I like to call Mário-Bomb'itis - she's EVERYWHERE!Quebaz wrote:Considering she's already from the same studio and Nami from One Piece, I could see it happening. I think this warrants a double post instead of an edit: Usagi's voice actor in Portugal will be Raquel Ferreira, who appears to have been Ash Ketchum's coice actor back in the Advanced Challenge arc (the Ruby and Sapphire stuff). I like her voice, she seems to handle Usagi well (and I just love that they kept the catchphrase exactly like the 90s).
Here's the promo airing in Panda BIGGS: https://www.facebook.com/sailormoonport ... =2&theater

The premiere will be Saturday, May 2nd, 8:30 PM GMT.

Glad it's someone "new", pretty excited for the dub as a whole since pretty much the beggining, but all these details have made me stoked, will definitely be turning on Biggs on the 2nd.omegalucas wrote:I think this warrants a double post instead of an edit: Usagi's voice actor in Portugal will be Raquel Ferreira, who appears to have been Ash Ketchum's coice actor back in the Advanced Challenge arc (the Ruby and Sapphire stuff). Would be dumb not to, considering it was a direct translation in the first place.omegalucas wrote:(and I just love that they kept the catchphrase exactly like the 90s)

Exactly. But such a phrase could easily have been translated in a slightly different way (and still be correct), if they didn't care or take into account the old dub. But they have been really careful so far and are a lot in contact with the fans. I'm glad they are giving this series such a treatment.Puto wrote:Would be dumb not to, considering it was a direct translation in the first place.omegalucas wrote:(and I just love that they kept the catchphrase exactly like the 90s)

You mean like the subtitles for the R movie that they just aired this month?omegalucas wrote:Exactly. Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Sailor Moon Crystal premiered today. I liked the dub, Usagi has a pretty awesome voice (she has quite a range). Surprisingly, Mário Bomba and Bárbara Lourenço are not part of the dub team (so far)
Mamoru's voice actor Rogério Jacques used his Seiya voice for Mamoru instead of the one he used in the 90s but it's relatively close and it gives him a younger tone.
All the names are from the original - Tuxedo Kamen included! I was wondering if they were going to use Kamen or Mask (or even try to translate it) but Kamen feels just right.
On the other hand, the transformations and attacks are ripped straight from the old dub (they're not totally accurate - "Moon Tiara, Action!" instead of "Moon Tiara, Boomerang!" and "By the power of the sacred Moon Prysm!" instead of "Moon Prysm Power, Make-Up!" but they sound well and for nostalgia's sake I'll let that pass xD).
It's nice that they are using the Blu-ray footage with all the redrawn stuff Toei did for the home release (and TV broadcast in Japan as well) but they could have cut out the sponsors and "See you next time" screens (and maybe the eyecatch) instead of speeding up the opening credits. Another con would be the use of "Episode" instead of "Act" and the voice actor that says "To be continued" (why not use Usagi like in the title screen and next-episode preview? Or keep it silent) and the whole thing of saying "Sailor Moon Crystal" during the opening (which is something that happens in every anime dub since Digimon Adventure).

Just for the record, Moon Tiara Action was actually what the attack was called in Japanese in the original series.omegalucas wrote: On the other hand, the transformations and attacks are ripped straight from the old dub (they're not totally accurate - "Moon Tiara, Action!" instead of "Moon Tiara, Boomerang!"
And also, they didn't 'speed up the opening credits'; the whole episode was sped up from 23.976fps to the PAL standard of 25fps. Dragon Ball and DBZ (but not GT) did that too, it's not something unique to SMC. Basically, when you take an NTSC show and want to air it on a PAL channel, there are two ways you can achieve this: you either speed it up to 25fps (increasing the speed but keeping the video quality intact), or you telecine it, using interlacing patterns to make it 25fps while keeping the original speed (but reducing the video quality). They merely opted for the former in this case.

I thought that at first but I supposed it wasn't because the episode itself sounded fine. Maybe it only sounded off during the opening because I like that song and listen to it frequentlyPuto wrote: And also, they didn't 'speed up the opening credits'; the whole episode was sped up from 23.976fps to the PAL standard of 25fps. Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Yep, the dub's pretty good, Jacques' new Mamoru voice makes for some reason fits the new animation better than the old one would I think. The only faults IMO that are going to hurt it in the long run is the lack of male actors, just in 1 episode, 4 characters already share the same guy, it's only going to get worse as it goes along. Still, I'm liking it so far, the perfomances are good and the accurate scripts are a plus.
Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Only voice I honestly disliked was Shingo. And about the script, I didn't like how they translated the 'ai to seigi no sailor-fuku bishoujo senshi' speech—was a bit too verbose for me. Everything else was excellent, in my opinion… though of course there's already legions of fans complaining that it isn't the old voices.

Agreed. Usagi's voice actress had to speed the line a bit for it to fit and it's a bit jarring.Puto wrote:Only voice I honestly disliked was Shingo. Not in Crystal, its Moon Tiara Boomerang there. And even so, he already knew they were from the old show.
I'm sorry for butting in, I've heard a lot from you Mr! (I'm Spanish Speaking so I dont want to leave Puto alone LOL.) What I've heard from Portuguese dubbing is that it was sloppy and badly made, I'm super glad to see that's not the case. Maybe it was an angry Sub fan who put that misleading info LOL.
Anyway, Pleasured to make you Sir! Also 92 Sailor Moon was pretty badly dubbed in Brazil so I'm glad Portugal will get Crystal right, I hope Brazil gets it right too when the time comes. I'm not Brazilian but I want Anime to have great dubs everywhere.
Also, Wow they got Seiya to do Tuxedo Kamen! Tohru Furuya played the original one so I do find it a bit of a nice casting gag! LOL.
Also on the topic, Toei may have rebooted the show but they animate as extremely little as possible, to the point that the new attacks are just the old ones with the new Toys eeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrr I mean WEAPONS yes!
And at one point they Forgot to put the new Toy into the footage so Sailor Moon Performed Moon Princess Halation with the Moon Stick from the first arc Its even worse when you realize The Freaking Silver Crystal is still in the Moon Stick despite being in the new Brooch she just got!

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
It was going to happen no matter how good they were, the fact that Jacques and Cavalinhos are reprising their old roles and Fernanda Figueiredo is there as a tribute is pretty awesome already, what do they want more? Decade old perfomances and pop culture jokes thrown in?Puto wrote:Only voice I honestly disliked was Shingo. Still surprising we get Crystal dubbed but not Kai...This world never made sense.
I hope Sic Radical airs the Buu arc subbed to finish it for good, at least. And I hope its a different story for super.
I always talk with the dubbers about the new stuff when I can. Last month talked to Cristina Cavalinhos (Bulma) but its up to the studios/channels not to them.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
