Being literal is fine when it makes sense (Kuririn, Tenshinhan). It's a case-by-case basis. There is no science here. I've changed my preferred transliterations and adaptations countless times over the years.

Well, Tenshinhan is fine, but Kuririn? How many Americans do you know who wouldn't have been tripped up by that pronunciation? I mean, I can pronounce that correctly, but only because I happen to listen to your podcast, and also because I did actually take Beginning Japanese.

You still KIND pronounce it. You just dont realize it. Krillin, is Ku ri llin, but said really fast in a way only a foreigner can say it. Sure the llin ruins the accuracy, but if the International was Kririn, it would be entirely pun conservingly accurate. Despite the fact that Katakana Romanization renders some words unrecgonizable its based on a sound logic, if you pronounce some words fast enough they come out unmistankenly alike.

Sure when its WRITTEN the pun is lost but there you go.

I love this line, whenever someone asks me how I can do something I use that as my reply. Not a whole lot of people get it, but when they do, it's hilarious.

Nappa's Saban line "those buildings may have been evacuated" was even stupider. How the hell would he have known if the buildings had been evacuated or not? There was also another line in that dub where he implied that an entire city had managed to evacuate in the seconds before he destroyed it.

Goku: "It must be my diet. I eat really healthy foods!"
Burter: "You think? Your diet, huh? Well, you'll be eating my fist next!"

Freeza: You dirty crook, you stole your mother's pocket book.

Ahh man too bad they changed it into a generic "shut up" in the remastered dub. Any scenes with Vegeta and Bulma were great!

Puto wrote:Chiaotzu is actually correct and perfectly logical. Short version, 'Chaozu' is the Japanese approximation of the chinese Chiaotzu/Jiaozi, just like 'Shenron' is the Japanese approximation of the chinese Shenlong. FUNimation actually did the right thing there.
After so many years of hearing Chaozu it feels incorrect to see/hear "Chiatzu", as much as someone spelling "BluRay", "Blue-Ray" or "BluRay" than its proper, i.e, Blu-ray.

Kuririn isn't really hard to pronounce, it's just a matter of getting use to like saying Ra's al Ghul than Ro's al Ghul or Raysh al Ghul, although all three are perfectly acceptable by CW's Arrow (season 3 has been a trainwreck but whatevs).

Oh yeah, totally forgot this one, I hate it: Kоrin (this name did not need any change whatsoever)
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Aaaaaaaaannddd, some more Vegeta:

Vegeta: Kakarot! Please! Destroy Freeza! He made me what I am. Don't let him do it to anyone else.

The whole scene though is total bullshit from everyone.

There is no such thing as Chiatzu, it's Chiaotzu.

FUNimation's version sounds like Chiatzu so it doesn't make much difference writing Chiaotzu.
