Being literal is fine when it makes sense (Kuririn, Tenshinhan). It's a case-by-case basis. There is no science here. I've changed my preferred transliterations and adaptations countless times over the years.Fionordequester wrote:Yeah. You can't be too literally when it comes to translating names anyway. Otherwise we'd have stuff like "Bejita" instead of Vegeta (because there are no V's in Japanese).

Well, Tenshinhan is fine, but Kuririn? How many Americans do you know who wouldn't have been tripped up by that pronunciation? I mean, I can pronounce that correctly, but only because I happen to listen to your podcast, and also because I did actually take Beginning Japanese.VegettoEX wrote:Being literal is fine when it makes sense (Kuririn, Tenshinhan). You still KIND pronounce it. You just dont realize it. Krillin, is Ku ri llin, but said really fast in a way only a foreigner can say it. Sure the llin ruins the accuracy, but if the International was Kririn, it would be entirely pun conservingly accurate. Despite the fact that Katakana Romanization renders some words unrecgonizable its based on a sound logic, if you pronounce some words fast enough they come out unmistankenly alike.Fionordequester wrote:Well, Tenshinhan is fine, but Kuririn? I love this line, whenever someone asks me how I can do something I use that as my reply. Not a whole lot of people get it, but when they do, it's hilarious.Lord Beerus wrote:More awesomeness from Vegeta:

Nappa's Saban line "those buildings may have been evacuated" was even stupider. How the hell would he have known if the buildings had been evacuated or not? There was also another line in that dub where he implied that an entire city had managed to evacuate in the seconds before he destroyed it.Lord Beerus wrote:I've got another gem:

After so many years of hearing Chaozu it feels incorrect to see/hear "Chiatzu", as much as someone spelling "BluRay", "Blue-Ray" or "BluRay" than its proper, i.e, Blu-ray.Puto wrote:Chiaotzu is actually correct and perfectly logical. Short version, 'Chaozu' is the Japanese approximation of the chinese Chiaotzu/Jiaozi, just like 'Shenron' is the Japanese approximation of the chinese Shenlong. FUNimation actually did the right thing there.
Kuririn isn't really hard to pronounce, it's just a matter of getting use to like saying Ra's al Ghul than Ro's al Ghul or Raysh al Ghul, although all three are perfectly acceptable by CW's Arrow (season 3 has been a trainwreck but whatevs).Fionordequester wrote:Well, Tenshinhan is fine, but Kuririn? Oh yeah, totally forgot this one, I hate it: Kоrin (this name did not need any change whatsoever)

Aaaaaaaaannddd, some more Vegeta:
Vegeta: Kakarot! Please! Destroy Freeza! He made me what I am. Don't let him do it to anyone else.
The whole scene though is total bullshit from everyone.

FUNimation's version sounds like Chiatzu so it doesn't make much difference writing Chiaotzu.Puto wrote:There is no such thing as Chiatzu, it's Chiaotzu.dbboxkaifan wrote:After so many years of hearing Chaozu it feels incorrect to see/hear "Chiatzu", as much as someone spelling "BluRay", "Blue-Ray" or "BluRay" than its proper, i.e, Blu-ray.
