Apparently, in those days, the scripts FUNI was provided were pretty bad, sometimes to the point of unusability. Because of one such instance, Chris Sabat decided to improvise that line, not knowing what else to put in there.

I figured, I wanted to wait for confirmation. I was afraid Funimation really was that incompetent. Saying Ha as Ya.

I actually growing to like the Funimation version, even if I still very much prefer the Japanese Version and want the show to be close to the Japanese. And there are cool and reasonable Funimation fans.

Also Gerardo Reyero's QUEDATE QUIETO NO VES QUE TE VOY A MATAR! (Stay Put! Dont you see I'm going to KILL YOU!?) is legendarily cheesy and kind of out of place but I still think that for Latin America Reyero IS Freezer!

Also the Cover up for the NO BAAAAAALLS scene is insanely hilariously terrible. ESPECIALLY if you watch one of those DVD's that splice the Japanese footage into the edited footage. Goku (With Nozawa's voice) goes and removes Bulma's panties and in the next scene Goku is voiced by Laura Torres and says something along the lines of "BULMA, TENGO HAMBRE, QUIERO DESAYUNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!" (Bulma,I'm hungry,I WANT BREAKFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST!) and Bulma still goes and checks for the Dragon Balls.(To be fair to the LatAM dub, they might have meant for Bulma to be generally scared after Goku yelled,so she might have assumed they were under attack, even if Goku just wanted breakfast) Sure its ruins the later Bulma lacking panties jokes, but its hilarious...And its a pretty major Dub Only deviation, so it belongs right here.

There was a line in the dub when Goku is about to fight Kid Buu and he says "I won't be around forever, [looks at Vegeta with a disgusted face], and neither will he, hopefully!"

I'm not familiar with the original version of that scene but this line always stood out to me as something Goku wouldn't say. What does Goku actually say there in the original Japanese episode?

Pretty much any silent moment filler, or any line that dates the dub to the Early 90's through unnecessary attempts of sounding "hip and with it." So pretty much any time someone uneccesaryily said "chill out" "bud" and this one particular time I think goku tells a dinosaur to give him a break, it attacks him and he says "not THAT kind of break, Man!" Oh and anytime someone says "what's shaking." I'll admit, even as a kid, the 90's lingo had me cringe because of how forced it was. Mondo Cool still hurts me to this day.

Ohhh ok, interesting. I guess Vegeta did kind of fly off in the middle of the speech. Although the dub line is pretty much accurate until that last part where it made it seem like Goku was talking more to himself.

Not so much BS line, but more understandable change, was in the 1995 DB dub of Oolong trying to steal the Dragon Balls instead of trying to cop a feel on Bulma when she's asleep. No way that would've passed at that time.

It's such a shame that this thread could go on for a while because even early in it's run, the in-house dub showed promise, but was hampered by terrible and goofy dialog and bad direction. Sometimes when I watch the show subtitled, I imagine how those words would've sounded coming from the dub actors, like if we got the avuncular narrator played by Brice Armstrong with an accurate script instead of Dale Kelly/Kyle Hebert sounding like a monster truck rally announcer and spouting terrible lines, "it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's Goku..." which was literally the first line in season 3.

Heheh, and some of Vegeta's corny exclamations, like "GREAT GALAXY!" And "SON OF A NAMEK!" Those had me rolling. Can't forget what's possibly my facorite exchang, though:

Sometimes when I watch the show subtitled, I imagine how those words would've sounded coming from the dub actors, like if we got the avuncular narrator played by Brice Armstrong with an accurate script instead of Dale Kelly/Kyle Hebert sounding like a monster truck rally announcer and spouting terrible lines, "it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's Goku..." which was literally the first line in season 3.

While Steve Simmons' translation is fantastic, it's also the kind of translation that can only work in subtitles. It reads perfectly fine, but a lot of lines come off stiff and awkward when said aloud. If they were to redub the entire series, I would want them to start the writing process with Simmons' script, but then take a long, hard, aesthetically-minded look at the meaning of each line. Switch words around to make the sentences flow more naturally, make the lines a bit more concise (simplifying verb tenses and other linguistic "filler" if the meaning can be retained) in order to avoid distracting quick-speak, and for stuff that pretty much requires a translator's note, bite the bullet and make up a rough English equivalent out of whole cloth rather than try to force a square peg in a round hole.
