Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
The movie assumes you're familiar with Dragon Ball; otherwise you are sitting there wondering why this kid has mystical powers and why he's important. They did an origin story without putting in any of what it would've taken to develop the idea.
The best thing about DBE is that Emmy Rossum met Justin Chatwin, and then she recommended him for Showtime's Shameless.

Well... It can definitely be a fun movie if you watch it with friends to laugh at how bad it is, but it is not a good movie. It's a guilty pleasure... an extremely guilty pleasure.

This film is mostly responsible for the revival of Dragon Ball.

Which is why I'm glad that it exists. If this awful movie never happened then we probably wouldn't have gotten Toriyama to return and create Battle of Gods, Resurrection 'F' and Dragon Ball Super. I never thought I'd say this but thank you Dragon Ball Evolution. Thank you for being so terrible.Zombie wrote:This film is mostly responsible for the revival of Dragon Ball.

Is that true though? What was it about Evolution that would have gotten Toriyama back to work?Super Saiyan Swagger wrote:Which is why I'm glad that it exists. Also, did Toei make much money from it at all? If they did, I guess in a strange way it kick started something. I don't know.

Wow haha! Thanks for that. Shots fired from Toriyama.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Yes, it is. Here are his comments from him on the movie.BlackCatScott wrote:Is that true though? What was it about Evolution that would have gotten Toriyama back to work?
Still though, I won't be able to bring myself to say I like Dragon Ball Evolution.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, when Bandai wanted new series around that time and they were saying "We wanna listen Sensei Toriyama! Help us and guide us" he went all 'nope!' thoTheDevilsCorpse wrote: After Evolution came along and they weren't listening to his advice, it changed his attitude. His constant remarks these days are things like "there are only some things that the original author would know", calling out Evlution for being a bad movie, for some of Watanabe's script not capturing the tone of the series he wants to set and the dialogue not sounding in-character. He's effectively saying that the other people working on the franchise don't understand his characters, so as the original author, he's going to step up and do things. Thus we're getting content these days almost directly from him, to the point where he's doing almost everything prior to animating except scripting the fighting scenes, leaving that up to the staff.

Kai was announced in February of 2009, while Evolution premiered in March shortly after. The discussion for the new series would have occurred well before production began on Kai though, which in turn would have been well before the film was finished and rustled his feathers for not only ignoring his advice, but proving that doing so didn't wasn't of benefit.Basaku wrote:Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, when Bandai wanted new series around that time and they were saying "We wanna listen Sensei Toriyama! Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
I don't hate Evolution, but I've never actually met someone who likes it either. Even in a "so-bad-it's-good" kind of way. I don't fault the writers for essentially taking after the animated dragon ball movies and trying to condense some of the material, but everything else was pure shit. Goku and Chi-Chi being highschoolers, the cheap cgi, the unfitting and unconvincing actors for their respective roles, and the bland cinematography/direction make the film near un-watchable.

Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
It wasn't Dragon Ball. They took Goku and tried to turn him into Peter Parker. Bullied at school, socially awkward then realises he's destined for greater things etc, Chi Chi being the Mary Jane of the story. I was just waiting for Grandpa Gohan to say "Goku, with great power.... comes great responsibility."

It'd still be better than "Ally to good, nightmare to you!".BlackCatScott wrote:It wasn't Dragon Ball. They took Goku and tried to turn him into Peter Parker. Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
See, I didn't even look at it as a Dragon Ball movie. Beside the names and the actual Dragon Balls, it was not part of the story. So that helped...but not a lot.
I don't think that ANYBODY'S acting in that movie was good. Not a single person's. It was awkward, forced, and not funny when it was "supposed to" be. The fighting scenes were awful. The costumes were awful; Goku looked like he was wearing a gi made out of orange construction paper. The Kamehame-Ha is...what? An air-bending technique? Goku's hard-on for Chichi was what inspired him to master his powers? That's weak. I had a hard time liking anybody in that movie. What's her face for Chichi was okay, but she didn't really have a big part to play. Piccolo was just bland, Goku was awkward and creeped me out, Bulma was so vanilla, Roshi was way too over-the-top ridiculous, and Yamcha looked like he didn't want to be there. Oh and the special effects... Man, that Oozaru was trash.
I'm glad I saw it, and I"m even more glad that I didn't pay money for it. It was on Cinemax one day. I forced myself to sit through it and I will tell you this much, never again. I'm glad I got to see it, but I refuse to ever watch that thing again.
So no, I don't like it, but it really doesn't stem from any biases I have because it doesn't conform to the story. The movie itself was trash.

Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
Dragon Ball Evolution, in hindsight, was the most significant thing to happen in the franchise since 1997. It's vindicated by history now. It's still a fucking shitty movie. But it's shittiness lead to great things for Dragon Ball. Who would have thunk it?Super Saiyan Swagger wrote:Which is why I'm glad that it exists. Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
Evolution was in development since 2002 and Fox hope for that the movie would have a summer 2004 or 2005 release date at the time. Fox finally got the movie green light in 2007. The movie had a late summer 2008 release then push back to March/April 2009 due to that they needed to do reshoots and could be that they also feel like movies like The Dark Knight and Tropic Thunder at the time would over shadow it. I'm pretty sure Evolution was in long production before Kai was.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Kai was announced in February of 2009, while Evolution premiered in March shortly after. Well, I mean, anything can be entertaining if you approach it in the right way.

Yes, but it doesn't seem like them just not listening was enough to piss him off. In early 2009, for the theatrical program, he was still playing the nice guy. From what we know, it seems like his attitude changed once he saw the finished film upon release.Hellspawn28 wrote:Evolution was in development since 2002 and Fox hope for that the movie would have a summer 2004 or 2005 release date at the time. While we have no way of knowing for sure, I personally think he was appalled with it in even in 2009. The phrase "playing the nice guy" is probably very, very appropriate here. Even then, as I recall, he expressed confusion at the things that were changed...something tells me that was a way of sneaking in a, "Seriously, this movie is f****** appalling" statement, without using those exact words.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Yes, but it doesn't seem like them just not listening was enough to piss him off. A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."
