Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
I think it's likely he wrote the comment after seeing the film, and though it wasn't to his liking and they didn't take his advice, he was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and stifle his criticisms just in case fans would be accepting of this interpretation of the series . Once it released and word started getting around that most people were finding it to be not just a bad Dragon Ball movie, but a mediocre movie in general, it gave him validation in his thoughts that they just didn't understand his world and characters. Thus when Shueisha and Toei brought it to his attention that they were doing another movie and he saw Watanabe's script with a tone and dialogue he didn't feel really fit his world, he started having vietnam flashbacks and decided to stand up and fight this time.

I dislike this movie with every fiber of my being and hope to never again watch it. The fact that it screwed up Dragon Ball's chances of ever getting made into live action again by Hollywood, where I feel has a better chance of adapting it than anywhere else, bothers me to no end.

What I hate about Evolution is that it took 7 years for a live action film from Fox to come out. After X-Men was a huge hit, Fox wanted to make as many movie franchises as possible. So they did Fantastic 4, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Daredevil after 2000 during the early-mid 2000's. Not to mention DBZ was still pretty big on TV at the time in the US. So Fox knew that they can make a big money maker fast. I hear the movie went through many rewrites from 2002 - 2007 and none of the producers where happy with each story draft. I also remember being told that Evolution also made so that Fox can keep the Dragon Ball license longer if they didn't start filming soon.

Probably, but not necessarily true. I mean, don't get me wrong, I agree with you for the most part and think that we'll probably never see another attempt at a live action movie. On the other hand, who knows, maybe Super will cause the franchise to reach the popularity it reached over here back in the early new millennium.SSJ Human wrote:I dislike this movie with every fiber of my being and hope to never again watch it. Not to mention that sometimes franchises need bad movies so that Hollywood execs can get it through their (often) thick skulls that they need to adhere to the source material more closely. Part of the reason we got Batman Begins (and, by extension, its sequels) was because of just how vocally outraged Batman fans were with Batman & Robin. And, well......Dragon Ball Evolution hasn't exactly been lacking in the "vocally outraged fans" department.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I don't see another Dragon Ball live action movie happening for a long time. Evolution is still recent and fresh in people's minds. People will be like "Another Dragon Ball live action movie? Didn't they learn from the last time?!". I feel like it's too soon for another live action film. Just do one 15-16 years after Evolution, so people will forget that it exist similar how Godzilla 2014 came out 16 years after the last American Godzilla film.

Out of curiosity, how long does FOX's current license for Dragon Ball last?
I would never trust them to do a Dragon Ball film again.

They got rights in 2002 and I think in 2007 that they had a deadline to have the movie be made before their rights ends. Similar how the D&D movie took 9 years to finally get made since the studio was going to lose the rights if they didn't film it on time. Similar to what happen with the 1994 F4 movie as well.

Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
To be honest, when I first saw this movie I saw it with two friends and we were LITERALLY the only three people in the theater seeing it, so we had the unfettered ability to riff on the movie as much and as loudly as we wanted without bothering anyone, so riff we did.
For this reason, I have a very big soft spot for the movie because it enabled that ridiculously good time. We laughed so hard and joked so much. One of my favorite jokes was when "Chichi"* tried to seduce Chatku, my friend John said "Well, that explains Gohan then".
So basically, I have very very fond memories of this movie, but those memories exist for all the wrong reasons lol.
*(It's later revealed it was the movie's version of Mai in disguise, but it's initially presented as her)

Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
I saw Evolution with my 13 year old sister at the time and there was hardly anyone there. It was the opening week and there was two or three other people there. One person was like "I already saw this movie five times already!". There was also a dad and a smaller girl that came in the movie and walk out because they went to see the wrong movie by mistake. They ask if this was "Imagine That" and we where like no. As bad as Evolution was, it was not the worst movie of 2009 to me. I found Transformers 2, Legend of Chun-Li, 2012, The Haunting in Connecticut, Gamer,Terminator Salvation, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 and Old Dogs to be much worst to sit through. DBE is only 85 minutes long and is quicker to sit through both 2012 and Transformers 2 seeing that those two movies are brainless plotless movies with no substance into them that go on for over 2 hours. Terminator Salvation, Gamer and The Haunting in connecticut are both really boring to sit through and Salvation makes T3 look good in my opinion.

Re: Does anyone actually like Dragon Ball Evolution?
So it's like when Sony had to make a Spider-Man film every so many years to hold onto the rights etc? In that case, is that exclusively to live action films they make themselves, or does FOX's distribution of the animated films count? Because if so that would have reset with the release of Battle of Gods and Resurrection F.Hellspawn28 wrote:They got rights in 2002 and I think in 2007 that they had a deadline to have the movie be made before their rights ends. Not that I think it matters. I couldn't see us getting another live action film for a long time anyway, but I've always said it's something that could be done (and could be done well), but I would never trust 20th Century FOX to produce anything worth seeing.
