Eh, I told her I have an HD setup with a 16:9 plasma television (a Pioneer PRO910-HD that I've had since '04), and that I still didn't want the series cropped. I don't think I'm the only one (hell, most people who'll shell out for a TV that has a 16:9 display are more anal about OAR, not less. Rich kids who post on forums and didn't buy the TVs themselves don't count, since they probably don't even know the implications of altering aspect ratios ;p).
When I said "we" I should have put the general buying public. I think the majority of us here on these forums will want the original stuff, but the average joe won't care.

Hm, for some reason the button for the 480p version doesn't work. Funny, since 480p isn't even HD either (720p, 1080i and 1080p are the HD resolutions) :P

Anyway, I watched the original trailer again, and it seems too...claustrophobic. Things seem too boxed in, which makes sense given that the original animation was never intended to be crushed/cropped into a widescreen aspect ratio.

Oh yeah, I got you. I didn't think you meant us as in the DaizEX/AnimeonDVD/ANN forum-goers. I was just stating that, if they had that misconception, I was trying to inform them that it may very well be the opposite (as it is with me).

I mean, widescreen is great and all, but it requires framing shots differently and simply snipping off part of the top and bottom of a fullscreen presentation and squishing it slightly doesn't make up for that. That's why it looks slightly crammed, as I noted above, despite the marginal footage we gain that was outside of the action-safe zone previously.

Yeah, I know its not really HD, hence the quotation marks around "HD version."

EDIT: I downloaded the trailer, and will re-upload it to my webspace for those who can't get it to work....link here soon.

EDIT 2: Here it is.

Just watched the 480p trailer. Picture quality looks good. Unfortunately, the top and bottom of the screen will be missing.

Thanks for the link. And yeah, I was goofing on FUNi for the 'HD' flub, not you ;)

Um... hasn't this trailer been out for some time? Nonetheless, I guess I'll comment on it, since I haven't for quite some pages now.

FUNi's done a pretty good job removing all of the grain and whatnot. But I guess the whole widescreen thing held me back from commenting about that earlier. Also, I noticed that when the screen split between Goku and Vegeta in the trailer, Vegeta had slightly more space so his chin, suggesting that FUNi will move where the black bars will be instead of just putting them right on the top and bottom.

Watching the trailer again, I think it's good to finally have FUNi release everything consistently, unlike before with the black boxed sets, then the different voices, etc. And while I still think there's some kind of conspiracy with FUNi and their new footage, I feel slightly better about planning on buying this set. I think being a long time fan of the show and noticing how clear the footage now is is what pulled me in :D.

Okay, after watching the good quality trailer here, I have to say I'm excited again. I don't think the widescreen thing will bother me too much.

But this has assured me that I want a widescreen TV someday seeing as how everything is coming out widescreen now.

But the footage looks really good. Like the "Saiyan Showdown" DVD I have now... sooo muuuch grain.

I just hope they do the same for Dragon Ball and for GT. Maybe even the movies, for consistency's sake.

But I wonder what they'll do with the TV specials? Will they be included like they were on the Dragon Box? Either way, this first set wouldn't have one, so we'll have to wait and see.

I gotta say, from those screencaps and watching the higher quality trailer... that footage looks so much cleaner and clearer than what FUNi's original footage looked like.

Maybe, just maybe, I can get over the fact that it's cropped if I'm watching this bad boy on my friend's huge ass TV.

If for those people who nitpicked about the colors of the older DVDs, it looks like Goku's skintone is now the "proper" pinkish pigment, instead of the whitish-yellowy skintones seen on the original DVDs. So that's something right there...

Oh yeah. Aside from my concerns about overpacking the DVD's (which, we'll see about), if not for the whole 'the way it was meant to be seen!'/widescreen debacle I'd call it a damned respectable release. Hell, I'd wipe FUNi's past shit clean and call it a proper way to move on and prove that they're a respectable company because damn I like their other releases...

But no. They had to fuck it up, which makes me sad. It makes me more sad that they can't man up about it and just say, "Oh, we didn't know fans were this passionate. Okay, we're looking into it." Instead it's, "Oh, you don't get it. You're getting more image! See, Gohan's face!" >_>;;

Incredible quality! I'm impressed with the complete lack of grain and how sharp the picture is! I'm starting to not really care about the cropping... Hopefully some of the shots won't be too affected.

I think the real test is on episode one. I remember the grain amounts on the mountains in the background as just being horrible, not quite the shots they are showing us (which many of the shots are from discs they have never released yet).

Yeah, his skin color looks more like that image now than it did in the Ultimate Uncuts, but it doesn't look quite there yet (at least, in my opinion).

Another bonus has been revealed! (Forgive me if it's already been posted) According to RightStuf:
"This set has been digitally re-mastered in High Definition and transferred from the original Japanese film. Features revised English dialogue and the original Japanese music, and comes with a 24-page booklet filled with episode summaries, character descriptions and a Dragon Ball Z timeline."
Pretty cool considering FUNimation hardly ever produces inserts for their DVDs anymore (well, at least they don't for the shows I purchase). So we're kinda getting our own little version of the DragonBook. Nice.

O.o

OoOh. Nice, indeed. I'll definitely be getting this, then.

- EDIT - I'll come right out and say it. Shut up about the widescreen, people! Nothing important will be chopped out, so who cares?! Quit whining! This is a good thing FUNi is doing for us! Good!

YES! Whether you think FUNi's taking a page right out of other season boxed sets' releases, or the DragonBox itself, I think we can all agree that this is definitely another plus to add to our list. I'm definitely much more psyched about getting this set after re-watching the commercial and finding out this bit of news. :D

The way I see it, I think the set will be like your standard season sitcom DVD release, which is pretty damn cool :).

Honestly, I've lost all hope for the widescreen battle. Like VegettoEX has said, it's already in production (Although we don't know about anything AFTER the Vegeta/Saiyan Saga boxsets). And if I AM right about the info in the brackets, then yeah, I don't wanna see inconsistency.

If it's widescreen, then widescreen it is. It doesn't matter. Future releases (Like that Hyper Edition Corey mentioned :D) will probably fix this =P
