Re: Would you enjoy an official dub done by Team Four Star?
Except for Colleen Clickenbeard's Gohan, I really like the Dragon Ball Kai cast. However, I would definitely check out a dub by the guys at Team Four Star. I think folks there are really talented and from watching their behind the scenes videos, they have high standards for themselves. I'd really be interested in hearing some serious performances from their actors because they're super die-hard fans over there. Degree of fandom doesn't always equate to quality, but I think they would do a great job!

I'm asking for a single scene that the above poster would think is as emotionally impactful as the original because in not one clip have I ever encountered anything like that, and it's even weirder because it's a parody. I honestly don't understand.VegettoEX wrote:<br abp="846">Is there a particular reason you feel the need, pretty much every time I see someone note their enjoyment of the Abridged voices, to pop in and say you think they're crazy?<br abp="847"><br abp="848">We get it. I disagree, I think that is conversing. Spewing hate is a little strong, you make it sound like I made an anti-Semitic comment.
Maybe, MAYBE, TFS members could become good actors if they were serious about it and weren't just a bunch of friends getting together to do what they think is funny, but I have heard nothing that has convinced me that they are at the level some here claim. They're about as good as the inhouse dub actors were, but far more self aware.

(Reposting this here, as I'm 99% sure it's going to be missed at the bottom of the last page.)
Holy shit, 5 million? Try, like... 1% of that. Maybe 1.5%.
We cannot monetize copyrighted footage, songs, etc. Even if we COULD, well... we still wouldn't be making anywhere close to 1 million.
As for an official dub: I think a lot of the actors we have are capable of professional roles. I mean, hell! Most of us are already being cast in official dubs, and some of us in prelay in different parts of the country. But an official dub of DragonBall? Eh, if we had a professional studio and access to more actors, I'd put a soft "maybe" on the table. Certainly wouldn't use the exact same cast we have now.

It's great that you're getting paid to do what you enjoy, but 1 - I don't think it shows here nor do I think that's necessarily the hallmark of good acting, being able to get work.KaiserNeko wrote:(Reposting this here, as I'm 99% sure it's going to be missed at the bottom of the last page.)

Edit: Also, ABED? I won't speak for myself or even the two people who work closest to me, but we sure as hell have plenty of talented people on this team who are getting professional work with studios all over the country. If you take our performances in DBZA and HUA as all we're capable of, you're short sighted at best and downright insultingly ignorant and presumptuous at worst.
Care to explain how I'm ignorant? I know that you have gotten professional work. I'm happy when people make a living, but that's not proof that you're good. Keep in mind that the inhouse actors are also professionals, that doesn't mean I think they are all good.

There is nothing to prove. If you think you're good, that's all that should matter, not what I or anyone else says.

Re: Would you enjoy an official dub done by Team Four Star?
While I love Sean Schemmel's performance and I'm glad he'll most likely have the role of Goku for years to come, I personally believe MasakoX's take on an English Goku is the closest I've heard to replicate Nozawa's work in another language. Also, Takahata101's Cell and Bardock are stellar. I think they could pull off an actual non-parody dub if they really wanted to. I mean, Kaiserneko's delivery with Trunks going SSJ after Gohan's death was better in every way than Funi's take. They are an extremely talented group of people.
Re: Would you enjoy an official dub done by Team Four Star?
In a hypothetical world where you guys did a pro dub of DB, I'd track you down and pummel you if you didn't at least keep Masako X as Goku & Gohan, Lani as Vegeta, Yourself as Trunks, and Taka as Cell.KaiserNeko wrote:As for an official dub: I think a lot of the actors we have are capable of professional roles. That BEING a hypothetical situation however... DBA is just all around awesome and I wanted to say keep up the good work sir! (Already got to tell Lani & Taka the same at Phoenix Comic Con!)

I've probably said this before, and maybe in this same thread (it's a year old, after all), but I just don't get the certainty that TFS couldn't do a "real" dub because they're a parody group. That makes absolutely no sense to me. I mean, you're judging them on something completely unrelated. They're too funny? Well, duh. That's the point of the material they're using. Doesn't mean they'd perform the same way with different material. It's like finding Robert de Niro funny in Meet the Parents and then going, "Well, he must have sucked in The Godfather Part II."

Re: Would you enjoy an official dub done by Team Four Star?
I would very much enjoy an official dub done by TFS. They really capture the spirit and charm of Dragon Ball in many ways that the Funimation cast really haven't. And to me, with every new episode, their acting has only gotten better and better.

Re: Would you enjoy an official dub done by Team Four Star?
I like what they do with Abridged but dubbing the series faithfully is a different beast altogether. Unless you're well prepared and have an actual budget it's not going to turn out well. Part of the reason why Abridged works is the snappy editing, freedom from conforming to mouth flaps as well as writing their own scripts and taking liberties with the source material.
The slow pace of Z coupled with having to write a faithful script AND matching that to the pre-existing mouth flaps (not to mention all the screaming) would be a tough task for the TFS team to pull off well. It definitely wouldn't be as entertaining as their Abridged work. As for actors I think a couple of them work well in a comedic dub but I have doubts if they'd do as well in a serious version especially after we (as an audience) already associate them with comedy going in, I think the change would be jarring to most of their fans.
If the series were to get another dub I'd rather the Ocean cast be the ones to get another crack at it or at the very least Funimation with a fresh new cast.

I know what you're getting at, but even in Meet the Parents, he was convincing in the role and played a role that was more or less played straight. Perhaps a better argument would be basing De Niro's skills off of his role in Rocky and Bullwinkle. That would be a fair point.Gaffer Tape wrote:I've probably said this before, and maybe in this same thread (it's a year old, after all), but I just don't get the certainty that TFS couldn't do a "real" dub because they're a parody group. Whenever I catch a clip of the TeamFourStar dub I always have a chuckle. It's funny stuff. They're good, clearly talented.
It's a parody of the series though... I don't think it's done a lot of good to the franchise in all honesty. It would never be my way of watching the series.

Terry Jones wrote and starred in Monty Python and Holy Grail. Then he wrote and hosted completely serious documentary about daily life in Medieval England. I don't know if there's a better example to prove that parodies can be made by knowledgable and dedicated fans and that playing silly is a choice, not inability to do serious job.ABED wrote:I know what you're getting at, but even in Meet the Parents, he was convincing in the role and played a role that was more or less played straight. Fair point, and while I'm not a Python fan, even in that I saw they were good performers even if I wasn't a fan of the material; it never came across as amateurish to me.Terry Jones wrote and starred in Monty Python and Holy Grail. Then he wrote and hosted completely serious documentary about daily life in Medieval England. I don't know if there's a better example to prove that parodies can be made by knowledgable and dedicated fans and that playing silly is a choice, not inability to do serious job.
Take another example though not a parody, Blazing Saddles. The performances and comedy are silly, and the acting is good within the context of that story. I buy Gene Wilder as the Wako Kid. I don't buy TFS as their characters. That wouldn't matter as much if I found it funny, but in the context of the thread, I don't get a sense from this that anyone would come away thinking "these guys would be great in an earnest role". I'm not saying they aren't able to, but purely from this, I don't get that impression.

Re: Would you enjoy an official dub done by Team Four Star?
While the script was written by Oxford graduate historian, the production of Holy Grail was as amateurish as it could be for professional film. Cardboard decorations made by actors themselves, gags modified as the budget dwindled, actors staring in several roles and imaginary horses were born of necessity. Even the iconic ending come to life because they had no means for original.
