Favorite Goku & Vegeta inspired characters?

Post by voltlunok » Tue May 19, 2015 11:06 pm

It's no mystery that Goku & Vegeta have inspired plenty of goofy, kind hearted heroes and plenty of grumbling, cocky anti heroes! But what is everyone else's favorite character inspired by the two saiyans?

Both of my favorites come from the same series! Bear with me here but...Tyson and Kai from Beyblade!

Tyson takes a lot of Goku's goofy, naive nature and runs with it! He always strives to be the best but never at the cost of a friend and I enjoy how even down to his hair a little, Tyson takes from Goku!
Kai on the other hand is obviously inspired by Vegeta! It's all there, the attitude, the desire to always be on top, the arrogance and the pride! But what makes Kai my favorite on this is definatly how they just play all this completely straight faced even though they are playing a game of tops...it's just great!

Monkey D. Luffy for Goku.
Not sure who the Vegeta equivalent is in One Piece though honestly? Maybe Zoro or Law? I don't mind either of them.

Toriko's titular character and Zebra are the only others I like both characters.

I don't think any series other than One Piece and Toriko really has a Goku and Vegeta inspired rivaly I can stomach both sides of.

Hitman Reborn and Naruto both have Vegeta inspired characters I want to drop kick into a fire, the latter of which I'd douse in alcohol before doing so;
How Sasuke was considered a good guy after the shit he pulled constantly amuses me and it's the de facto example of author favouritism to handwave karma retribution. He's like Vegeta's jackass parts turned up to 11 without any of the redeeming familial love...even after he has a kid with the woman he tried to kill THREE TIMES who still loves him because reasons, he's still an insufferably psychopath.

Fairy Tail's Gray or Gazille as the Vegeta equivalent is about the only series I prefer the Vegeta inspired to the Goku inspired. Natsu is pretty obnoxious constantly one shotting so called 'threats' in his series whilst screaming about friendship and yet refusing to let any of his friends help.

Overall I think mangaka's need to stop taking inspiration from this rivalry and try and come up with something original. The closer they follow it, the worse the characters are, being blatant Goku lite and Vegeta lite characters.

I guess on the most basic, surface level, Tyson/Takao and Kai are the "Goku and Vegeta" of their series, but I don't think they have much in common beyond being main characters that are rivals. Off hand, Takao is extremely selfish and whiny when things aren't going his way, and he is quick to get overly emotional. Maaaaybe you can make the leap that Takao in Season 1 was similar to Goku, but if I had to compare to some other contemporary shonen lead, it'd be Naruto.

For Kai and Vegeta, it's the reverse of Takao and Goku. Vegeta's ego is so engorged he doesn't believe Goku, or anybody, does anything for any other reason but to annoy him, and he's quick to anger(He accuses Goku of "backing out" of their fight at the 25th Budokai because he wants to follow the guys that just stabbed his son in the stomach; how dare he!). Kai is much calmer; more assured of himself. If anything, Kai is more like Piccolo; not to mention the weighted clothing.

A good example of pretty direct Goku/Vegeta surrogates are Naruto and Neji from Naruto.

Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece for Goku, as these two are the only exceptions, I despise the rest that follow this archetype because they lack the same charm as Goku has (Naruto and Gon come to mind). For Vegeta, I guess Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho counts as one, maybe Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin too.

Songi and Gala from the JRPG Legaia Densetsu. Songi being Vegeta inspired and Gala being Goku inspired (although Gala kinda looks like adult Gohan).

The story between the two reminds me of the rivalry between Goku and Vegeta. Songi was naturally the stronger fighter than Gala, but because he was talented from the get go he didn't put near the amount of effort in his training that Gala did. Gala eventually surpassed him with his dedication to the Biron Martial Arts and received the coveted title of Master Teacher instead of Songi. Songi grew bitter toward Gala and couldn't ever surpass him naturally once Gala received the title, so he resorts to putting on a Seru to gain strength more quickly and beats Gala with ease, even though it's against the rules of the monastery to wear one. Songi betrays the monastery and kills almost everyone by leading Seru into its grounds, and Gala decides to break Biron's rules and puts on a Seru of his own to avenge the deaths of those who died. In their next meeting, Gala beats Songi decisively, but Songi uses other methods to increase his power even further and attacks Gala and his cohorts multiple times later.

I kinda have to disagree. I see a lot of Goku & Vegeta in Tyson & Kai. A fine example would be near the end of season 3, Tyson vs Kai in the finals where Kai completely chews out Mr. Dickenson before round two for trying to deny him the right to settle things with Tyson. He is so angry that his pride is being trampled over just to ensure the safety of others and even eggs Tyson on to finish things, even Tyson's response is very Goku like, finding it fun to try and finish this rivalry.

Another example for me is the Black Dranzer arc in season one. It had small echoes of Majin Vegeta to it. Kai becoming a major threat by joining the enemy team, stealing everyone else's bit beasts and destroying other people's blades just to show that he is the strongest. Yes they aren't 1 for 1 copies but they are clearly INSPIRED by Goku & Vegeta. If anything I would say Ray is more like Piccolo and Max like Krillin. But that's just me.

Plus the thread is more about characters inspired by them rather then being one to one copies.

Who said anything about relationship? This is a thread about Goku-inspired characters and Vegeta-inspired characters, not necessarily duos that have the exact same relationship toward each other that the Goku/Vegeta duo have toward each other.

And LOL at Crono having no personality. Clearly you're being disingenuous. He isn't exactly a William Shakespeare character, but the few canonical aspects of his personality that you can grasp from obligatory events in the game and official artwork definitely depict him as Goku-like. Crono sleeps easily. He eats a lot and very fast. He is competitive. He doesn't hesitate to sacrifice himself for his friends. How is that not like Goku? The player can make him a bit more of an asshole if they want, but these are aspects from obligatory events and official artwork that the player has no influence on.

And Magus is also definitely inspired by Vegeta. You make it sound like "bad guy becomes kind of a good guy" is just a minor aspect of the two characters even though it's pretty much the core aspect of them both. Magus even does the "leans against a tree on the side and looks away while the others are having fun together". He actually also has a rival relationship thingy like Vegeta, but it is targeted on Frog rather the Goku counterpart.

Because Vegeta actually replaced Piccolo's role when Piccolo's role was shifted to Gohan father figure/100% good guy/wise old man.

But he still doesn't possess Piccolo's back-story, which is very similar to Magus' (Daimao's), not to mention their designs and their personalities.

Yugi and Kaiba kind of have the same dynamic going on, the elite guy ashamed at getting beaten by someone he considers weak and low class, but eventually growing to respect him and working together sometimes while still being rivals.

Actually from that perspective I just recalled another one; My Hero Academia's Midoya and Bakugoa. Worth noting that the elite vs. weak is about the only similar dynamic between them though.

You can't just cut out the relationship aspect of their characters (well, at least Vegeta.) That's THE defining aspect of his character. He defines his entire life by his relationship to Goku. Goku, I guess, doesn't really give a shit. Magus and Frog kinda resemble this relationship, although with the situations reversed. Magus is the Goku in that relationship, not really caring about Frog, while Frog has defined his life by his opposition to Magus.

The "few canonical aspects" you are referring to basically can be described as "sometimes does good stuff." Congrats, because you just equated Crono with basically every living person ever to have lived ever.

Firstly, Magus's reform is optional. Sure, it's the "canon" storyline, but, as a result, it means that it can't really affect the story all that much, so nothing ever really happens with it. Besides, Vegeta is driven by pride. Magus is driven by revenge.

To be honest, no one!
I like original things, so whenever I see Goku/Vegeta rip offs I feel uninterested for them.

I started to love Gon Freecss (HunterxHunter) when he stopped being a copyxpaste Goku and became a unique character during Chimera ant arc.
That was the right path. Before that, he was just an another Goku wanna be and there's nothing new in him for me to like.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
