Are there any dub pieces that you prefer over the original?
This can apply to the Funimation dub or otherwise, and I'm not really including openings or endings. If you like the dub soundtrack more in general, feel free to put a Japanese track you prefer over it. Anyways, I personally like the Mr. Satan Theme from Funimation better than the Japanese track. The reason for this being is that I think it fits his parody of professional wrestlers much better and even makes his character funnier. Whereas, having a much more light-hearted theme makes you kind of expect something humorous to come out of him. Does anyone else share a similar leaning towards a dub track?

I pretty much prefer the Faulconer Productions and Shuki Levy/Ron Wasserman scores to Kikuchi in general. Apart from in comedy scenes were Faulconer had annoyingly goofy music playing throughout.
On the other hand I do prefer the original Tokunaga score to the Menza score in GT because it's more varied and memorable. Although I still think the Menza score is decent enough and fits well with the dub.
And there was that scene in the Japanese version of Z were Trunks thinks about his timeline in that cool Terminator 1 reference and this plays:

That was one of those insert songs that really stands out as feeling different to Kikuchi and gives off an unusually dark but appropriate feel.

Yeah, this is basically my response to this too. I do enjoy both Faulconer and Kikuchi, but I think Faulconers crushes Kikuchi. But Faulconer should've kept those comedy parts silent, that way it could at least be consistent to Kikuchi's method in that regard.90sDBZ wrote:I pretty much prefer the Faulconer Productions and Shuki Levy/Ron Wasserman scores to Kikuchi in general. I have no idea what the corresponding Japanese piece was, but I'm pretty much incapable of thinking of Vegeta's first transformation without this tune playing out in my head. Like, while watching the Japanese version of the show, I still had to switch back to the dub score briefly to listen to this. It's just...amazing. I'm not even a Vegeta fan (especially not at that point in his journey as a character), but damn if it didn't (and doesn't) get me pumped every time.
Edit: Found a clip of the scene in Japanese. Apparently that's why I didn't remember it is because a good portion of it is silence before a track kicks in that...I kind of recognize from other scenes but can't think of specific ones.

A lot of the transformation and more bombastic moments (like Vegeta's Final Flash) had a lot more kick to them than with Kikuchi or Yamamoto. Not that I dislike their takes on those, but Faulconer really made em extra awesome.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

I generally prefer the dub composers over Kikuchi (although i'd rather listen to GT with Tokunaga instead of Menza). Here's one scene where i prefer the dub music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6EidzTATG0 (Saban music version)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4CAFAAHv3k (FUNimation music version)
The Japanese score for this scene has NO music and makes an enthralling moment feel dull and lifeless. I don't know how anyone could honestly prefer sterile silence for these kind of scenes.

I agree 100%. Ita impossible for me to watch Goku turning SSJ3 without hearing the Faulconer theme in the background. It just intensifies the moment so much more for me.ekrolo2 wrote:A lot of the transformation and more bombastic moments (like Vegeta's Final Flash) had a lot more kick to them than with Kikuchi or Yamamoto. For DB-Ginyu Force I love Kikuchi, but once the Faulconer music comes in I always switch over
Super Buu, Evil Buu, SSJ3 Powerup, SSJ Transformation, Vegeta Powers up, Gohan Powers up, and Gohan Fights Freeza are some of my favorites
Re: Are there any dub pieces that you prefer over the origin
I think the only moments I really like over the Japanese version is Super Saiyan 3 (that theme is great), and the moment Goku and Uub are fist-to-fist with sparks resonating from their arms. The song at that moment never comes up at any part of the series except for that moment. Otherwise, nah not really. Hate to say it, but it feels like I outgrew the Faulconer tracks, or any of the others. Minus some movie licensed music tracks I guess, I still enjoy the music choices from Cooler's Revenge (it's what got me into rock as a kid). I can't play Raging Blast 2 or Tekaichi 3 as/against Cooler without playing "Poison", "Under", "Falling Down", "Told You So", "Phoenix", or "Revolution." And the Dream Theater music from History of Trunks is still enjoyable.

Re: Are there any dub pieces that you prefer over the origin
Kikuchi did actually compose a music cue for this scene, but it went unused - and this is one case where I don't blame them, as I think the music intended was altogether too cheerful to completely fall in line with the gloomy backdrop. I'd link to it but that would just result in Kikuchi-bashing.Kakacarrottop wrote:I generally prefer the dub composers over Kikuchi (although i'd rather listen to GT with Tokunaga instead of Menza). I don't think leaving this particular scene silent is that bad of a decision, we westerners seem a bit spoiled when it comes to having music in scenes that appear to call for it. It would have benefited from some scoring to be certain, but a lack of music doesn't completely ruin this scene. Now, if you were talking about the speculative yanking of "Anticipation" from Movie 2, then I'd agree with you, because that cue does fit the scene some of us think it was meant for.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Re: Are there any dub pieces that you prefer over the origin
Goku's SSJ theme, Goku's SSJ3 theme, Gohan Angers, Vegeta's Hells Bells, Vegeta's SSJ theme and Gohan Powers Up are all Faulconer tracks that I will admit I prefer over the original tracks that Kikuchi uses for their retrospective scenes.

I like the Super Saiyan 3 transformation theme, and that's about it. Faulconer, on occasion, produces good tracks but I don't like their placement with the exception of that one scene.

Re: Are there any dub pieces that you prefer over the origin
Would that unused piece happen to be the first cue that appears in the "Reunion! Tenkaichi Budokai" track from the BGM Collection? It starts off with upbeat Goku/action material and then segues into Piccolo's theme, followed by a rendition of Tullece's motif for when they have their little bout. It then concludes with the beginning theme once the scene goes back to Goku finishing his opponents off. It seems to match perfectly when one tries to synch it up to the footage, and the use of Tullece's material pretty much seals it.kenisu3000 wrote:Kikuchi did actually compose a music cue for this scene, but it went unused - and this is one case where I don't blame them, as I think the music intended was altogether too cheerful to completely fall in line with the gloomy backdrop. Edit: And now I just remembered that it was also included in that extended Movie 3 suite...
Even though one can understand why they omitted it from the final film, it still feels like a shame to remove a cue like that. It's a case of some decent thematic writing all packed in a very short piece and exemplifies why the 3rd DBZ film had one of the best scores of the lot.
