It kinda is.
But yea, I doubt Toei is planning for anything more than 26 episodes or so from the get-go. They may decide to do more (not as in a second season, but just continuing to push forth episodes) depending on views and sales.

Yeah, it's gonna definitely be longer than 26 episodes. It's Toei, it's Dragonball, it's the timeslot (the Dream 9 block never had a series shorter than four cours).
Last but not least, 50-episode shows are more attractive for international sales.
It's a safe bet Super is being planned for 48-52 episodes, with a possible extension if things go as expected.
Ratings won't be a problem - the Buu arc of Kai is doing extremely well in that regard, and that's a half-assed rerun - so it all comes down to merchandise sales. And 26 episodes wouldn't even be enough to measure that and start to planning more, immediately.

It won't go over 26. If it is a gigantic hit, they'll just make another season in 1 year.
That's not how Sunday morning anime works. If there is any set amount of episodes to begin with, it'll be 50-ish, and you can bet they'll extend it if they feel it's worth it. The model you're talking about is late night anime that runs at 2 AM.

This. They're confusing Dragonball with late night anime that rely almost entirely on dvd/blu-ray sales, not on merchandise and ratings like daytime series.
Those require a completely different planning and strategy.
How many franchises can you list that have lasted 20+ years after their manga's original run ?
Dragon Ball still getting new movies, OVA's, spin off manga and anime series' even after all these years is testament for how special Dragon Ball truly is.

The timeslot has never had a series begin in midsummer either. It could easily have a shortened run and end for the next series to take over at the usual time in 2016.
As for the planning... it's more Dragon Ball. Merchandise sales are gonna be what they are at the start. Doesn't require as much planning as an entirely new property. The ratings are the main question and 26 episodes will be more than enough to judge whether people are into the new stuff as much as Z or if they've made another GT and need to scrap it.

Or how many entered global pop culture history? Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Pokemon and that's basically it. Other properties don't even come close.
Are we only counting stuff that has at some point had a manga? Because I could list literally dozens of franchises that have been relevant for decades longer than Dragon Ball has.
Dragon Ball is "special," yes. But let's not pretend that it being old is any kind of unique thing.

Gundam for one, they started in 79 and are still going strong. Let's see the Guyver Manga is still technically going and they started in 85, Let's not forget Saint Seiya either! To add a little western flavor, Transformers and TMNT are still getting new content across multiple forms of media. To add some Toku flare, Godzilla is still going strong and he's from the 50s. There are plenty of things that are much much older then Dragon Ball that are still running to this day.

Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

I think he was referring to franchises that started of as a manga and then continued to relevant even after the original manga run ended. Not franchises in general media. But if you know about a Looney Toones manga, tell me about it now.

Battle Angel Alita, Bastard!!, Berserk, Bio Booster Armor Guyver and JoJo has been around the 1980's and still running today with new manga chapters. While not as well known as DBZ, but they are still on going. Both Detective Conan and Shin Chan are over 20 years old and still on going today.

Dragon Ball is special. Not due to its longevity though.
Before One Piece, it was the highest selling manga of all time. It's influenced a lot of shonen manga. And, along with Pokemon, it's the most mainstream Japanese franchise (excluding video games) and anime on the planet.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball is special, *specially* for Latin America. DB has been ingrained on our culture for the last 20 years... I was worried the new generation wouldn't take it up and say it was "old", but DBZ is still strong on the 8-12 year range here in Mexico... I don't see any other series getting the same love from old and new watchers as DB.
BTW, Berserk is lost in the same Hiatus Hell as HunterxHunter. It makes me a sad panda.
